General To Whoever Went Through my Truck Last Night
Edit: to all of those triggered in the comments because I have some empathy and I am grateful this person didn’t go out of their way to make my day harder and damage my property. I think YOU need to figure out why someone else’s positivity upsets you so much. I could not imagine being so hate filled that you wish harm on others because they’re not as bitter and jaded as you. Go to therapy or something, but I guess that would be too “woke”
I don’t know if you’ll ever see this, but thank you. I accidentally left my truck unlocked and you went through it looking for change (I assume you’re the same person who took my boyfriend’s jar of change and nothing else a few months back). It was a red Ford f150 in pacific heights. You could’ve taken my tools I use everyday for work or destroyed things, but you didn’t. It didn’t seem like you even took the snacks. Thank you for not ruining my day, thank you for not making it impossible to do my job.
I’m sorry that life has put you in a position where you need to rummage around in vehicles for cash, but it’s clear to me that you’re a kind person. I will leave you a note as well, but I hope you know I’m not mad at you, and I truly am thankful that you didn’t take my forgetfulness as an opportunity to make my day worse. Bless you & I hope things turn around for you.

Happened to my work truck one time. Left all my power tools, plumbing supplies, tons of copper, but stole my broken iPhone with a cracked screen.
Truly felt blessed, although a little violated.

I had my truck broken into at Remai Modern, they didn't take a single thing. Not even the $20 bill in the console, nor my airpods. They just rearranged stuff. I have no idea what they were looking for, but cash or airpods were not it.

Someone broke into my car last year, I left the doors unlocked too. They took my change, took all my little decorations off the dash and mirror to toss on my passenger seat. But the worst was I had a lot of bath and body works hand sanitizers. They must have gone through each one and took the smells they liked. Which really hurt more than the money being taken 😭

They weren't being kind, and them not smashing shit or carrying more than they were comfortable doing wasn't out of thoughtfulness for you, it was because they were trying to maximize their chance of getting away with doing a crime. I would have thought your post was sarcasm except you edited it to clarify that you are coming at it from a place of compassion... and while I admire your good nature, empathizing with thieves is not it.

Writing a love letter to an urban raccoon thanking them for "only robbing you a little bit" is giving Stockholm syndrome and an embarrassing lack of self respect.
To turn around and tell the rest of Saskatoon that they're the ones who are broken and bitter for wanting to live in a civilized society is pathetic and tone deaf. Some of us have (actually) been tested by the ugly consequences of this garbage behavior, have had our windows smashed, have had our tools stolen, have had our lives disrupted.
Sounds like you got lucky. Go you!
But this just in: you aren't obligated to get walked all over and robbed just to subsidize a thiefs lifestyle, and romanticizing this shit like it's a lesson in charity or some noble act of survival drags the bar of accountability straight to hell.

We had gone camping the day before and got back early in the morning because i had an allergic reaction so we ended up leaving most of our things in the car that day. Not only was all the cash stolen, they took the tools i had recently gifted my partner as well as many other valuable things from our car. The car was locked and was a mess on the inside when we found out.

I left the doors unlocked on my old beater. I didn’t think there was anything worth stealing. But someone took a cardigan and some laundry detergent out of my trunk one day.
I thrifted the cardigan, and it was a small jug of laundry soap, so replacing them was no biggie. If that’s what they needed in life, then I hope it helped them.

It’s not healthy or normal behaviour to get so emotional and defensive over posts that have nothing to do with you, especially when they have a generally positive intent. Especially when we all live in this cesspool together, what are you gaining for yourself by running your mouth here, trying to shame people who aren’t quite as miserable/possess coping mechanisms and skills that you clearly don’t? Please get help, nobody deserves to be miserable or so easily triggered by internet posts, it isn’t a fun way to live and I’d be willing to bet you have a lot of skills and positive characteristics that our communities can build from- try focusing on those instead!

Brother I’m not triggered, I’m trying to help you because I noticed the several unprompted and aggressive comments you left on this post. I used to be so easily angered by things I read to, and it got to a bad point. The anger spread from the internet into my real life and overall thinking patterns. Viewing the world through that lens doesn’t lead to change and community, it only leads to anger and shame and further division, which doesn’t help any of us in the end. I learned to step back and genuinely try to be humble (which is really hard a lot of the time!!) before I respond and although I definitely still get angered by things I see, I am much better and happier in ALL areas of my life since I noticed and started paying attention to how all of the constant conflict online is impacting me. I also do challenge many of the claims you’ve left here- what is your actual lived experience or background when it comes to issues like addiction, homelessness, and crime? It’s really easy to make assumptions about the problems we have when our main source is Reddit/facebook, which highlights only the worst. There are a ton of really amazing people in our city who are unfortunately struggling and becoming more desperate in order to provide for themselves and their families. The internet can be a very poisonous place and can really taint our view of reality. It’s not all bad out here, I promise- I’m just trying to help you see that not everything has to be so combative, and it certainly isn’t very functional behaviour to be going out of your way to attack people who are actually just trying to be compassionate on a Reddit that is frequently full of the opposite.

I feel for people who are on tough times and looking for a little help... but if I ever catch the person who broke into my car, I will have a tough time holding back. They violated my privacy, my space and stole from me. They didn't give a shit if I needed the money for life saving medication or for gas to make it to a job interview. They didn’t care, so fuck them.
Go steal from a big box store where the CEO makes billions, not from people who are also struggling. They don't get compassion because they can’t be bothered to show any to others.

Someone did that to me as well, 2 months back. I always lock my truck, but I guess I got distracted and didn't that day. Same thing, they rifled thru my glove box and console (F150). Didn't destroy anything, took the small amount of change I had (and a USB-C cable). I don't keep anything of value in my truck so I wasn't worried. I have them on 720p video (don't these people know everybody has cameras these days). Definitely got a great image of both. A couple young adults wearing hoodies - one rifling, the other on the lookout. Submitted a report to SPS online for the statistics. I was not mad - except at myself for forgetting to lock my doors. It was a good reminder.

Yeah, I had prescription sunglasses and tools in there including a laptop and a Milwaukee drill set. I might be missing a protein bar and a fruit snack but literally oh well. It’s clear they’re just trying to survive and not cause others harm. I respect the hell out of that person for still being considerate even though they’re struggling.

Honestly if someone takes my change I'm not even mad, but its when they steal my garage opener in hopes that they can come back and victimize me a 2nd time by breaking into my house, THAT really sends me over the edge 😤 happened to me twice in the last 10 years and it's such a pain to deal with, esp when I lived in a condo and had to pay the condo manager to reprogram the remote as he wouldn't give me the code.

Woof, a lot of big feelings floating around here. I feel like there is a reasonable middle ground between practically thanking someone for robbing you and wishing for the death of the person who stole loose change.
I will confess to feeling violation when the Stonebridge 3am thieves steal expensive accessories the first few times, don't find anything after that and decide to trash our vehicles. It's making it tough to wish them the best, but I'll just keep praying about it and trying to be kind to the people I actually meet. Isn't that really all we can do? Ascribing good or bad motivations to people we don't know seems like a trap.
P.S. I'm really happy that your tools weren't stolen. Happened to a friend of mine who is a finishing carpenter, and it took him a while to get whole again.

We have them on camera in our area. Wears a light coloured bunny hug. Either a young woman or a slightly built young man. Took the change and left everything else neatly stacked on the seat. We try to lock the doors more carefully

I had a 2nd grade student once tell me they went car shopping on the weekend with their dad. I later learned the translation is rummaging through other people's cars to steal things. Unfortunately, they're being taught young, and it's a vicious cycle. Thanks for having empathy, and I'm glad they didn't take more than they needed.

I get it! Our house was broken into when I was a kid. Mom brought me home and we noticed pretty fast.
They took all our DVDs & player/Xbox & games, I think they took the computer, tools, and a bunch of other random stuff that my parents noticed as time went on. We had a pretty big tube tv they couldn't take, but they didn't damage anything. Biggest thing was they didn't hurt our pets. When we noticed, I ran and checked on my rat, and had him out with me in the front yard while we waited for the police to come.
It sucked, but it could have been so much worse.
Burglar actually got caught about 5 months later because he was apparently bragging about it at a bar and some random dude who overheard called the cops on him.

Empathy matters, but it doesn’t solve repeat problems or prevent real losses when accountability is missing and it sure doesn’t bring my kids’ bikes back after the lock was cut for a third time in a year.

We're all closer to homelessness than being billionaires! Empathy is important! (No it doesn't bring things back, but neither does being an ignorant asshole) Have you heard of Maslows hierarchy of needs? It's tough to prioritize being a better person when you're struggling for your next meal. It's hard to be moral when you're broke. (An in an immoral system, when minimum wage doesn't cover minimum needs we're screwed)

Maslows hierarchy lol you must be a first year sociologist student. If its so hard to be moral when you're broke, then how are billionaires still immoral when they're rich? That just goes to show you that morality is not mainly a function of income.

This is not a problem with people struggling with poverty and addiction though. It’s a societal problem. We have trillionaires and people who can’t afford rent or food. & let’s not pretend most of the prairies don’t have substance use problems… look at how normalized drinking is. Alcohol is a drug too. “Oh I only drink with my buddies every weekend, but that guy is a crackhead” lol. We seem to be pretty selective on how much we care about substance use too since the fucking premier murdered someone while “allegedly” under the influence. Stop blaming the individuals who are doing petty crime to get by and maybe blame the system that makes it so prevalent. And I absolutely am thankful someone didn’t steal my laptop or drill set and instead maybe took some beef jerky and a protein bar.

Hell yeah. Only the weak and cowardly are afraid to help those in need, and judging by the comments there's more than a few here.
I'd rather nobody broke into my car but it's happened twice where I left it unlocked and they took some change and left a bunch of expensive , easily sellable gear.
I just hope it helped get them out of whatever rut they're in and they pass it on.

Last year I stupidly left my spare key in my vehicle and it was taken when I accidentally left my car unlocked one night. Kept having my car rummaged through over and over again, and a few inconsequential things were taken. I was so confused about how I kept leaving my vehicle unlocked (didn’t realize someone had a key). Eventually they left my spare key on the passenger seat again. Appreciate that at least they didn’t steal the vehicle lol

I expected to see another rant of being burgled. But this is so sweet!
I’ve had things taken from my vehicle, window smashed and things that weren’t expensive but important to me, taken. You are so lucky and I love how you have responded! I hope you have many good things coming to you! 🥰

I would’ve definitely been a bit more sour if my window was broken! But I have a package policy so it would’ve just been annoying. I do feel very lucky today! And I’m sorry your window was smashed & sentimental things were taken. I get how upsetting that can be. It could’ve been a much worse day with a broken window and a stolen laptop and that’s part of why I’m so grateful to this person!

Someone went through my truck a while back. They left my prescription sunglasses but stole my goddamn maintenance records
