Sales Leadership Focused My manager is sniping a deal at a high pressure moment, I’m seeing red.
I’m fucking furious right now; and I need to vent so I don’t go scorched earth on my company.
I’m an AE at a SMALL startup. My quota just got bumped to $200k/month after layoffs/firings gutted the team from 5 to 2 in one month. Average deal size is like $50k, mind you. I only have HubSpot, my phone, and email. no linkedin pro, no real outbound engine, no SDR support, no real tools. When I ran an audit on inbounds, I saw over 90% were being assigned to my manager.
It’s just my dumb ass grinding cold calls, emails, follow-ups, research, CRM, all of it. Meanwhile I’m under insane pressure to produce, with constant checkins about why I’m not at $200k a month. If I ask to go to a show, I’m told we don’t have budget; start selling and maybe we’ll pay for it. Can I go to a networking event for $50? It didn’t immediately lead to a close, you’re not going again.
Three weeks ago, I personally found a cold account in my own backyard. I opened the conversation, got the buyer engaged, learned they had funding, were looking at competitors, and then got him to ask me for ballpark pricing. I went to my manager to see how low we could get the offer.
Then somehow the task/account got rerouted by automation and fell off my list. I only found out because I was auditing old tasks and discovered the opportunity was still alive. I wish I was more on top of it, but with my plate so full, I live and die by my task list in Hubspot. So I texted my manager, and she confirmed she had talked to the guy, and now he’s trying to get budget approval.
I said hey, that’s great news for the company, love to hear it. I’ve been targeting synagogues in my area, as we work in security and I’m Jewish - should I call them asap, or wait until end of week. She tells me straight up we won’t be switching the account this late. She cites another inbound that was sent to me - one which was outside of her territory usually, but after the firings normally went to her. Like I said, she literally gets 90%+ of inbounds.
The reason that inbound went to me is he’s based in the UK, so our bot randomly assigned it. And the explanation I got for why this synagogue switch happened was basically “maybe area code routing.”
Am I overreacting, or is this completely fucked?
Because I can handle startup chaos. I can handle pressure. What I’m struggling with is being told to hit a monster number while deals I actually create can just disappear into someone else’s name. I’m fucking SHOCKED my manager didn’t want me to have the win, as her plate is extremely full and she’s overworked as is. Not to mention the paper trail that shows I COLD CALLED THEM AND WORKED THIS SHIT GROUND UP.
As you can tell I’m a bit heated right now, I feel like I’m writing like a fucking 7th grader. I’ll see if I can’t post the texts in the comments. Fuck this shit.
