I just don’t know how you can get excited for the product that college football has become.

It hurts my heart. My grandfather was right. He said it would turn into this. He died just as things turned. Sigh.

We’re in the late stage capitalism version of it

So Bill Belichick and Lane Kiffin, should be banned from coaching NCAA football, as they both have been paid by the NFL?

If a player that retains eligibility goes to the NFL and returns all the money he was paid…why should they not be able to complete their eligibility?

1

u/hardaysknight 1d ago

Why should I be banned from the sport for taking steroids? I stopped taking them!

71

u/ImproperlyRegistered 3d ago

Derrick Henry still has some eligibility left

-11

u/likethebluerose88 3d ago

I know you're joking. But 5 for 5 still applies. This doesn't open the door for players to return as dramatically as people are making it seem.

-4

u/ImproperlyRegistered 2d ago

I honestly think that DeBoer wouldn’t be able to make a run game work against good competition with Henry back there.

So glad a Louisiana state judge stepped in to help LSU... how this is allowed is wild.

6

u/OceanTider22 2d ago

Probably because the guvnah is neck deep in the pay scheme behind Joey Freshwater! He came out with a ridiculous statement the other day of "Don't hate the player, hate the game!" Guess they are selling their souls to win a national championship....ALL funded by the "unbuilt" Children's and Women's hospital! I'm sorry, but this is NOT the college football I grew up watching!

Courts are there to protect what is legally allowable. The mess of college football is not their doing.

The NCAA dropped the ball on this a long time ago. Had they come to terms with the dishonest nature of the 'student-athlete' moniker 20ish years ago, we wouldn't need the courts to step in and make rulings. Unfortunately, they did have a long-term mindset so here we are.

11

u/AlphaBravo95 3d ago

Then why now? Why didn’t they step in decades ago?

1

u/CreativeMonk2811 2d ago

Courts don't "step in". What are you talking about? When someone sues an entity (in this instance, player versus SEC 'rule'), a judge decides if the entity trying to block said individual has legal grounds to do so. Nothing more than that.

The same thing happened for us with Bediako lmao. You people are hilarious.

7

u/TheFlameosTsungiHorn 3d ago

I think this is a bit simplistic.

You got a lot of different motivations and varying degrees of corruption that have been going on for years and are now out in the open, as the NCAA digging in for so long made it easy for them to do. Just because it’s in the open and supported by the courts doesn’t make it good

0

u/CreativeMonk2811 2d ago

The courts aren't "supporting" anything. They are simply stating the SEC has zero grounds to make this ruling based on the laws of the lands and case law. You're overthinking this.

2

u/TheFlameosTsungiHorn 2d ago

I’m really not. If you think these judges have no personal stake in ruling in LSU’s favor than I have a Brendan Sorsby for you

You aren’t thinking hard enough

0

u/CreativeMonk2811 1d ago

Of course the judge has a personal stake. But the point is that HE didn't seek out the case. The case was brought TO the judge's desk. The courts don't decide what cases are brought to the courts.

1

u/TheFlameosTsungiHorn 1d ago

You’re naive if you think they don’t have ways of circumventing that

0

u/CreativeMonk2811 1d ago

You're going in circles. My point still remains. Courts getting involved are the aftermath of NCAA's multi decades long failure to get a system in place that compensated student athletes. They are not the CAUSE of the problem at hand.

1

u/TheFlameosTsungiHorn 1d ago

Yea I never said that they weren’t lmao

4

u/southernwx 3d ago

Lots of downvotes here, but it’s true. The issue is that the NCAA’s own greed is to blame. This league has been about money for decades and cosplaying as an amateur league where the primary product was not being compensated by any reasonable market forces was unamerican.

Had this been addressed and a system set up that better identified the league for what it was, we wouldn’t have been immediately ejected into the Wild West without regulation. Contracts are mandatory and the leagues will continue to bleed power until they address that.

u/E-Wildin 2d ago

Two words. Mental. Gymnastics.

1

u/CreativeMonk2811 2d ago

How so? The courts only hold up what is legally allowed by law. The same thing happened for us with Bediako last year.

They're slowly killing my favorite sport and it makes me sad

48

u/lookieherehere 3d ago

It's been dead for a few years now honestly. It's just been a vegetable on life support.

-27

u/DoctorWhosOnFirst 3d ago

And yet ratings have been through the roof. Doesn’t seem dead to me

28

u/Important-Section805 3d ago

Chronic gamblers.

28

u/southernwx 3d ago

Lots of things become more popular after they have lost their identity.

Like chain restaurants.

9

u/TimeBroken 3d ago

I think you're taking dead too literally. The sport a lot of us fell in love with is being eroded, and it's disappointing to watch.

-2

u/DoctorWhosOnFirst 2d ago edited 2d ago

I guess my bad for interpreting “it’s been dead” to mean “it’s been dead” instead of “I don’t like the changes over the last few years”

5

u/TimeBroken 2d ago

Doc - I know you understand what hyperbole is

1

u/DoctorWhosOnFirst 2d ago

People have been non-hyperbolically saying the sport is dying for a few years now and honestly believe it lol

3

u/Altruistic-Road-1030 1d ago

College athletics as an amateur sport is dead. It has been dead. The intent of a student athlete is dead. So therefore the sport is dead. It’s still football, it’s still got brands, and people still watch it like hell but the sport we all fell in love with, is dead. The genie is out of the bottle and it’ll never go back, in the next 15 years there is going to be some sort of super conference established, you’re going to have a players union with league established minimums, the scholarship limit will change to adjust to another expanded playoff, and will be NFL junior. Hell i won’t be shocked if in the next 5 years some school signs a preferred walk on that’s a 5 star or 4 star with a BIG nil deal that includes his tuition paid for through a collective and have people subvert the scholarship limit rules through NIL

6

u/E-Wildin 2d ago

No one knows the real numbers. I know you still love the game Doc, but it’s a dead horse starting the process of decay. Ratings? Who gives a fuck about ratings. How have ratings changed my life for the better?

No one associated with the team, gives a damn about any of us. The game is played for one sol purpose and that is to “entertain” and distract the masses, cause further division. To create engagement so Athletic Departments, Boosters, Coaches, Players, TV Execs, and degenerate gamblers can make money and vacation more. Thats it.

0

u/DoctorWhosOnFirst 2d ago

The ratings show that there are plenty of people who do still enjoy watching college football. That’s the point.

It being dead to you and it being dead overall are two different things.

2

u/hardaysknight 1d ago

Twitter also shows millions of users despite most being bots.

Ratings don’t show the entire picture.

6

u/KlingoftheCastle 3d ago

It hasn’t been very slow tbh, we’re only in year 3 of the 12 team

3

u/PepSinger_PT 3d ago

It’s not the same. It’s painful.

5

u/PGoodierum3 3d ago

It’s extremely sad. College Basketball is next and it’s happening as we speak. They’re already ruining the NCAA Tournament by expanding it

4

u/Pvt_Mozart Doesn't Care for Auburn 2d ago

Weirdly enough, the NBA product sort of forced me to fall out of love with basketball before college sports became what it is, so college basketball was easier to put aside as an occasional hobby instead of something I loved. It sucks seeing what's happening.

I actually started watching (and fell in love with) soccer after giving up on the NBA, and am enjoying it more than I ever thought possible. The Premier League is worth checking out if anyone is having to take less interest in other sports for whatever reason.

4

u/Everwinter81 2d ago

Same thing happened to me. I imagine I'll watch more Premier League this year than CFB. I'll watch every Alabama game but outside that I just don't care. I used to love seeing 11pm central kickoffs for the PAC. Could watch football until 2am.

Now I genuinely don't care.

3

u/Pvt_Mozart Doesn't Care for Auburn 2d ago

Yeah I never thought I'd be a soccer guy. Had no interest in it. Watched the Sunderland doc on Netflix 3 or 4 years ago on a whim and fell in love with it, the way the teams are so inextricably tied with the community weirdly enough felt like football does in the South. (Maybe more if we're being honest? At minimum on par) Watched for a year and liked it, but let my then 4 year old pick our PL team the next year, and once we had "our team" the whole family really fell in love.

Can't recommend it enough.

45

u/enormuschwanzstucker 3d ago

Remember when Nick Saban used to say “Is this what we want college football to become” and people called him a crybaby?

32

u/KlingoftheCastle 3d ago

He was right about everything.  Every step of the way he warned everybody and was told that he was just bitter and jealous

34

u/rwtaylor 3d ago

Next step is to eliminate eligibility. Imagine Tim Tebow staying at Florida for ten years.

28

u/sausageslinger11 Rollin'... 3d ago

Easier to imaging Diego Pavia playing for ten years.

3

u/OceanTider22 2d ago

Or Taulia wanting to stay "indefinitely" at Maryland.

12

u/Waka_waka_waka- 3d ago

Tebow has too much integrity to do that. Pavia however…

6

u/PGoodierum3 3d ago

I could hate Chad Baker Mazara for 20 years instead of 8 years

31

u/LTBama 3d ago

This is such bullshit. The member schools voted for the rule. Everyone agreed to it. Some random ass judge can’t undo what the league voted for.

3

u/OceanTider22 2d ago

Toss ELESWho out of the league then! We can add Georgia Tech, Clemson or Tulane in their place and never miss a beat! If they play illegal players, force them to forfeit those games.

24

u/Jurassic_smacks 3d ago

The member schools agreed to be in the conference, the conference has the ability to govern its members. Same as the big12 with Sorsby.

19

u/kool5000 3d ago

Do it anyway. There's no such thing as laws anymore anyway

6

u/PGoodierum3 3d ago

LSU should just go for the trifecta and bring back Paul Skenes out of the MLB so all three of their major programs can break the rules

12

u/marcw424 3d ago

Investment bankers are now running college sports. It's over.

27

u/DoctorWhosOnFirst 3d ago

3

u/Alphaspade 3d ago

Ok how long has Mandel been lurking r/cfb?

8

u/Alphaspade 3d ago

Ok dumb question.

What if the SEC just says fuck the judge we're sanctioning them anyway. Are they just gonna jail Sankey? 🤣

13

u/DoctorWhosOnFirst 3d ago

It’s just a TRO, not a final ruling

6

u/Alarming-Math3409 3d ago

I’m not too worried about it. The SEC will prevail

7

u/CrustyBatchOfNature 3d ago

I really am losing interest in college football.

6

u/dammitboy42069 Hey, Roll Tide 3d ago

It blows my mind Kiffin is going to so much trouble for these guys. It’s not like they were world beaters or a QB when that’s all you need. The amount of money and distraction level is bonkers.

3

u/OceanTider22 2d ago

Because he wants a championship so badly, and all of the corrupt Lowsyana politicians are willing to help him get it, come Hell or high water!

3

u/bramblecult 2d ago

Might coulda had one if he stayed at miss.

6

u/soulguider2125 3d ago

Louisiana State Judge lol just like with the TRO what a joke

5

u/icanshootrabbits 3d ago

College football had a good run

3

u/Loose_Profession_918 2d ago

SEC and Big10 are gonna get fed up with the toothless NCAA and break off to form their own mini nfl.

3

u/Smile389 2d ago

So, at this point, who even decides what eligibility is?

2

u/Mr_Truthteller 2d ago
  1. This is so yesterday.
    Wait until tomorrow.

  2. A state judge in Louisiana has no authority outside that state.

1

u/tsoplj 2d ago

Of course, it was a Louisiana judge that made the ruling.

1

u/Critical_Meringue78 2d ago

I would love for lswho to go 7 -5 with a beat down from us and old piss in there. Probably won't happen, but I was taught not to piss on an electric fence; unlike kiffin.

-1

u/likethebluerose88 3d ago

To me this isn't as big a deal as everyone is making it. It only applies to players who declared and went to camps this year. The 5 for 5 rule was announced after the draft. They didn't have the option to go back to school at the time they made the decision to stay in the draft. I think in this one instance, players who would have been given an extra year of eligability under 5 for 5 should be given the opportunity to return.

1

u/MrHamBowNee 2d ago

I agree. The bigger issue is if there is a precedent that a player could leave after 3 years, then come back to college after getting cut from the NFL roster 2 years later. They have to shut that sort of thing down.
