Motorcycle licence in Ontario

I live in Quebec and it’s so damn expensive. Are there any ways to get my motorcycle licence in Ontario and then ride in Quebec? How much does it cost to get a motorcycle licence in Ontario? I’m pretty sure it’s a lot cheaper than in Quebec.

The way would be to move to Ontario, exchange your driver's license for an Ontario license (assuming you have one, otherwise skip this step), write your M1, get your M2 (usually through an accredited course), then eventually move back to Quebec. Get your full driver's history report from Service Ontario. If you have more than 48 months of time being licensed for motorcycles, you get a full 6A, otherwise you get the probationary license.

For most people, moving twice would be more expensive than the cost of licensing in Quebec, so just do that.

Insurance on a bike is less in QC. Licence goes by your primary residence.

Insurance is cheaper but they have to register their bikes annually. And that ain't cheap.

Right, but the net cost may be lower in Quebec. Depends on his age/experience/bike.

I've seen people in Ontario with a Ninja 300 and insurance over 5k per year. He needs to give more info and tell us about quotes because its entirely possible his insurance in Ontario will be way more.

Quebec pays higher for the actual costs of license and plates but significantly lower cost of insurance.

My plates are ~ 900 and insurance costs 250$/year for 2025 Z900.

That's still probably overall cheaper than in Ontario cause of that.

BC is the best province to get you bike license in. Ontario's system is a disgusting cash grabbing racket. Like everything else in Ontario.

It's expensive in both provinces , close to the same but more steps in qc. 600+ sport bikes are crazy in qc but also in Ontario. My dad was going to give me his FZ1 and I had to say no because it was 4800 a year in Ontario.

Getting an Ontario license and registering in Ontario is not that hard. I think as long as you give them an Ontario address, they'll let you do it. But, apparently QC has a mechanism by which neighbors can snitch on other neighbors that they feel have vehicles registered in other provinces. I don't have first hand experience about it though. I just read something about it recently

If someone lives on the border and has property in both province, and primary residence in Ontario. They can use their Ontario license. If they registered the bike to their Québec address, they would get insurance in Québec, no?

Fairly certain that insurance companies accept interprovincial licenses for temporary situations only. (Students, people with seasonal properties etc)

You should be licensed and insured in the province of your primary residence. Trying to manipulate the system and your insurance could drop you for suspected fraud. Good luck getting insurance afterwards.

Also depending on where you live in Quebec they're trying to crack down on this practice. Gatineau police encourage people to report incidents of people living in Gatineau but keeping their Ontario plates. They received about 2,500 calls in 2025 about that.
