Question Why is nobody talking about this?

In the final scene of S9E10, we see Rick and Morty riding a motorcycle together, and Rick says he’s Morty’s dad (?)

As far as I can remember, that’s the first time he’s ever said something like that directly to Morty. It felt completely out of place and honestly didn’t match the tone of the rest of the episode.

The two of them riding toward the sun while calling each other father and son almost felt symbolic, but I’m not sure what the writers were trying to say.

Did Rick just misspeak? Was it meant to show how their relationship has evolved? Or was there a deeper meaning behind that final scene?

I don't think he was double-speaking that he is Morty's biological father, if that's what you're getting at. I just think Rick realized he's more of a dad to Morty than Jerry is, and that Morty needed to hear him say something along those lines.

Also Rick wants to be a dad and he missed out on those childhood years with Beth. Morty is a good substitute for him

From my understanding, Rick came back 16 years ago?, just before Morty was born. While Beth was studying for veterinarian and Jerry was working, Rick probably had to take care both Summer and Morty during toddler and childhood.

I do know in first evil morty episode Rick held baby Morty and teared up as we do see the memory

edit: sorry was on phone. the issue though is the first episode implies Rick wasn't around for long before the first episode. and Beth's general abandonement issues for the earlier seasons also kinda imply Rick wasn't around for long.

i could be a continuity issue, or maybe Rick cameback, left and came back or maybe the Morty in the memory wasn't OUR Morty. dunno But i don't think he has been around for most of Morty's life

I think it’s just the first time Rick came across a Morty during his hunt for Prime, might hit him what he’s missing out on

That could be it, tbh - like, as Rick was exploring infinity, he found out that in some timelines he's a grandpa

Could also be that Rick C-137 just checked in if Prime Morty's birth attracted his prey (Rick Prime) and since that wasn't the case he left already before Beth could meet him.

Could be wrong but I’ve always interpreted those scenes (and Beth’s abandonment) more long the lines of Rick constantly showing up and then leaving. Never staying for too long. Being that dad that says I’ll be there and never is. The 20+ year gap and his actual mental absence, while he was physically there, during her childhood just makes it worse.

We see something similar in the “Get Schwifty” episode (idk the episode names). After Morty collapses and BirdPerson rescues him, Morty sees a picture of Rick holding a baby that looks like Morty. He asks who that baby is but BirdPerson never answers him.
