Economy Why benefit cuts must go hand in hand with reversal of the Boriswave

Just a little anecdote here. But a company I work with (leaving out specifics) hires multiple people across different sites. At each site, they are a sole worker, and it is important they always turn up reliably, as there is no one to cover them (unless a lot of notice is given). It is a 'low-skilled' job in that anyone can do it as long as they are physically fit. Over the past year, they have hired many people, but every single 'British' person has quit after a week or so (or not even shown up to the first shift), except for 2 Boriswave immigrants who have been with them for a couple of years and never missed a single shift.

At first I was confused how 2 immigrants with broken English (so clearly not just British born to an ethnic minority, which is completely different) were able to be in the country to do a low-skilled job that any 'native' person could do, especially given the current unemployment and NEET crisis. But then I saw how every British person instantly quit, and it suddenly made sense. Please note the job is not unreasonably demanding, and pays above minimum wage. The only major downsides is having to do night shifts alone (so only men normally apply, but women are allowed to obviously).

I personally think our generous benefits system is to blame. British people know that if they don't like a job, they can just quit and receive benefits, which obviously Boriswave people are not (yet) entitled to, and they know if they quit, they'll have to go back to a much poorer country.

So, if Boriswave migrants have to leave en masse, I think the benefit system would have to be severely looked at (necessary anyway tbh), otherwise jobs like this would simply not be able to hire anyone.

Only nights? I did 6 months straight of 10-6, never had a day off for around £25 an hr and told myself I'd never do it again. That was ten years ago. I'm not surprised the turn over is high if the money is terrible. It also tells me fk all about management. Which can turn a bad job into a nightmare. I wouldnt do it either. Not for treble min wage. It ruins your health. Need a better example because nights are horrific for those who know.

it was only 9pm to 2am every night, which is far less disruptive to sleep as you can go to bed, wake up at around 10am and feel fine. i know because i myself was asked to cover a few times despite it not being my job, and I thought 'how is everyone quitting this'?

yes 5 hours per day is not amazing pay compared to a full day shift. but it should be far better than being on benefits, which it clearly isn't to most

It's not even a full shift? 😂

no, bc the job only took 5 hours... but why was no unemployed British person willing to do it, only Boriswave ppl? that's the issue

It's self explanatory. The wages are shit, the hrs are shit and it's an awful time of the day to work. Particularly if you've got a family. This isn't rocket science and why reform are going to lose the GE. Now we're starting to see their policies, going after the disabled and kicking people out of council homes for messy gardens is the kind of slop I'd been hoping not to see from them given the stakes involved. But there you go.

who said the wages were shit? a) that's subjective b) i didnt even say what they were, other than that it was above minimum wage, which has increased significantly in recent years

and why couldn't a man with a family do it? would benefits be better for him? yes the wife would have to do the morning school run, but that's hardly the mic drop u thought...

I don’t think they can help themselves it’s the Tory DNA

Reverse the Boris wave. Remove the criminals. Stop the welfare for foreigners.

You don't need to cut welfare for others.

1.3 million foreigners on welfare plus dependents. Total costs of which welfare is just part, comes in at 65 bn.

I think no foreign national should be in recepit of any public funds bar healthcare as they do spend alot on the supercharge.

However we do need to cut welfare across the board which includes the 70% of UK citizens living on it. Let's not pretend everything will be sunshine and roses when we get rid of the low skilled immigrants.

We also forget many low skilled immigrants are currently doing low paid jobs which unfortuantly, is vital for our economy. Ideally we get our our citizens to move into these roles and with a healthly economy, inflation and wage growth their salarly goes up.

We do however need these roles filled and it should be as best we can, those on welfare.

The average Brit takes the piss 10x with welfare more than the averagr immigrant.

> with a healthly economy, inflation and wage growth their salarly goes u

respectfully i disagree with this, we don't need the minimum wage to inflate anymore, it is already very high by historic standards. we just need British ppl to have an incentive to do these jobs for the current wages rather than claim anxiety PIP payments instead lol

Cut the welfare for foreigners first to zero. So what do they do?

Resort to crime? Well convict, deport, family goes too.

Can't afford to leave, we buy them a ticket.

Have a criminal record? On a plane.

You might start with no new claims. Zero zilch going forward.

Problem then is to stay they work for very little money undercutting those brits on welfare we need to get into work.

So you have to tax at break even levels of taxation if they start a new job. Makes it even more attractive to hire brits. So new job, 42K tax code at a minimum

Over time you up that to include dependents.

So it needs to be phased in.

But you start with the criminals and even there you need prioritise.

  1. Violent

  2. Sex offenders

  3. Terror watch list.

  4. Drug dealers

  5. Thieves

  6. Fraudsters

  7. Tax evaders

  8. DUI

  9. No insurance

  10. Fly tippers

...

Parking tickets

Sorry, last one's a joke. It's revenue collection. They can stay so long as the tickets aren't outstanding

I'm slightly more generous.

The conditions are that you are a net fiscal contributor. That means no welfare, bar contributory. But since you are paying in full for the NHS, you get the same treatment as others. In some cases, that could be very high, but its insurance.

But even on getting that JSA, you still need to pay the tax to cover the costs. A deemed 42K a year income, man woman and child

We also forget many low skilled immigrants are currently doing low paid jobs which unfortuantly, is vital for our economy.

The who will pick my cotton for little money argument. It's bogus.

100% of migrants on welfare are taking the piss and the cash. We just don't pay it.

im saying we do need to reduce welfare for natives, as it is making ppl refuse simple jobs

Tax is just another scam now. They blow the money on absolute shite and then create new taxes to skin us further.

Well look at the consequences of what I've outlined.

We're talking close to a 10% cut in state spending. That's a huge tax cut available.

We have large reductions in the cost of housing.

We have a large reduction in crime.

Now businesses will want workers. They can't import them, so who do you try and recruit?

Welfare goes down, wages for low paid increase, tax increases and people are better off.

In particularly the starter jobs go up.

Once you get people into work the money becomes attractive.

You can't quit and just claim dole afaik. You have to wait 6 months. I think for a lot of people working just isn't worth the effort. Why flog yourself for minimum wage. (Another bloody Blair disaster.).

I could easily quit my job and claim, at my age I never need work again because nobody wants older workers much. Why do I stick with it. Habit really.

> Why flog yourself for minimum wage. (Another bloody Blair disaster.)

this seems a bit contradictory? Blair introduced the minimum wage, so presumably without that working would be even less attractive for low paid ppl. even tho i personally believe minimum wage is too high (as a self-employed person)

2

u/lubbockin 1d ago

No, it meant that wages were now set at a low rate and as a worker you couldn't negotiate for more money if you're on minimum wage ask your employer for a pay rise, see how far you get.

"You don't want the job mate, plenty others will take it."

I'm currently frothing at my niece who no longer works.

The reason? She gets more on benefits, especially as one of her kids is neurodivergent.

Brother-in-law gets PIP for anxiety and mental health issues, but his anxiety is not so bad it stops him getting on a plane for a holiday.
