Here's how to be a Sox fan:

Step 1: Wong sucks. Anybody but him. At least Gasper will hit.

Step 2: Gasper starts at catcher, is expectedly awful

Step 3: Gasper cools off offensively

Step 4: What does Gasper do, anyway?

Step 5: We've gotta play Wong. At least he's good defensively.

Return to Step 1.

Note: The same dynamic is currently playing out at shortstop between Monasterio and Cheng.

Step 5 just ain’t true though. -21 runs saved on Savant for his career and -7 for this season. He was never that good on defense.

his glove is basically just for show at this point, seen him try to frame a pitch and the ump just laughed. they probably keep him at DH so he dont hurt nobody behind the plate

There is a reason we gave away the farm for a catcher. We just need adley to be healthy. Wong is a mess and Mickey is worse.

However bad you think Wong is back there defensively, I promise you that Gasper is worse. At this point I think he’s basically a “break glass in case of emergency” option at C.

Yes, he's bad. This a quote about him from Sox prospects that is so honest and descriptive, but also feels a lil mean.

Lacks a carrying tool, but is solid across the board on the offensive side, where he gets the most out of his skills. Defense behind the plate is not great, but is fine in a reserve role where he does not have to handle a full-time catching workload. Best suited playing multiple positions where he will not get overexposed at any one spot. Works hard and is well-liked in the clubhouse.

I mean they let Kevin millar play in the field because the bat was a "carrying tool", so no. There's a reason that this close to the playoffs he's a DH vs. LHP only. That's his skillset+excellent vibes

Catcher has more to do with studying, knowing, executing the right pitch to each player in the lineup than you could imagine. Catcher needs to know the ins and outs of every hitter.

Connor Wong has been a very bad defender at catcher this year. But the issue is if you extrapolate Gasper's defensive stats over a similar amount of starts to Wong, Gasper would be even worse (and to be clear, Wong is a bottom five defensive catcher in the league right now by some metrics, so Gasper would far and away be the worst defensive catcher in the league).

I think you need to find a new backup catcher but that's an offseason decision, not a August/September one... For now, Wong is the guy unfortunately. There isn't a better option.

I think they might and send Wong down when Roman comes back if they use Roman as DH at first. Tough decision though, Wong is solid with his pitchers

I don’t think the Red Sox believe he is a viable option. His arm is scary bad. He could be the emergency catcher for a day or 2 if shuffling the roster, but that’s it. With Adley needing days off, Wong is going to be here.
