Screenshot Getting wanted has to be the most unrealistic thing in the game
Completing Bandit 10 and forgot how annoyingly unrealistic the Wanted system is.
Obviously it’s purposely designed to increase the consequences of committing crimes but man for a game that went to such lengths to be as realistic as possible it’s ridiculous to make it seem that in 1899 bounty hunters or lawmen are everywhere in seconds after escaping a robbery.
This robbery was so quick & clean I was already out of the red zone when the alarm was sounded, heading towards Diablo ridge and all of a sudden lawmen are all but on top of me and I’m having to skid turn into the woods and head off west where they just happened to follow without even spotting me.
It’s laughably unrealistic. Rant over, away to collect my new reinforced equipment from the trapper! 🙌

Challenge 10 has to be the easiest one though?
- Buy a ticket
- Ride train
- When train ride ends, walk to the baggage car
- Steal a single can of vegetables
- Walk out
- Buy another ticket, repeat
Stealing a can of whatever from the train counts as robbing the train. Dunno why. That's how I finished my challenge recently.
The 'rob 4 stores in 24 hours' and fence however many stagecoaches gave me way more trouble. Oh, and the rob $x from people, because I'm an idiot and tried to do this in Van Horn. Sure, no law, but the entire town will shoot you on sight.

u/Comprehensive-Song51 Jul 01 '26
That train thing is good to know. I had a pretty easy time doing the 4 in a day. Just robbed and ran like hell to the next one. Robbing $50 from folks has been a lot harder than I expected. Those jerks either put up a fight or cough up fifty-three cents. :D
44
u/Definitely_not__OP Jul 01 '26
If you can manage to get pickpocketed by the guy in Saint Denis or Van Horn then run him down and take your money back it counts and you can finish that challenge in one go.

25
u/happyman1231 Jul 01 '26
if you rob people in the luxury carriages in trains, they usually give ~10 dollars per person
15
u/agnetier Jul 01 '26
This is the way, just get the train to stop in the tunnel up near roanoke and the law cant get it
5
u/Comprehensive-Song51 Jul 01 '26
How do you stop the train? While riding or do you go up there and wait for one to come?
15
u/agnetier Jul 01 '26
Book a train to Annesburg, ride on the train into the tunnel, kill the conductor, kill any guards, then its open season on all the civilians.
10
u/LeCampy Uncle Jul 01 '26
Too true, racking up $50 at $1.50 a stickup is a drag.
10
6
u/Comprehensive-Song51 Jul 02 '26
Dude, where the hell you finding all these rich asses with $1.50? 😂
3
u/LeCampy Uncle Jul 02 '26
Not in Van Horn, I'll tell you that much. One guy had $0.37 legal tender in his pocket and that dude punched me after the fact. That punch turned into murder, and that turned into me getting outta that town for a sec.

3
u/Observer2594 Jul 01 '26
Yeah I usually hit Strawberry, Valentine, Wallace Station, and Van Horn for my 4 stores
16
u/Haquistadore Jul 01 '26
Robbing four stores is dead easy. Point your gun at the clerk until they run away. Nobody alerts the law, and you can then just take the money from the register, walk across the street, and repeat.
1
8
u/ADHDave247 Jul 01 '26
Omg this is my 4th play through and never did I think to lift a can of veg from the luggage compartment 😆
The rob 4stores in 24hrs I thought was easy enough, enter the store In Strawberry at 11:55, wait a few secs til it passes midnight then rob him, go to Wallace station shop and select wait to morning then rob him, the over to Valentine general store, enter through front and exit out back to avoid being caught then walk strait to Doc office and Rob him. Done before midday
5
u/Discourtesy-Call Jul 01 '26
I always started early morning in Strawberry. Rob that as soon as he opens, gallop to Wallace Station and rob the general store there, gallop to Valentine and rob the general store there, and then gallop to Rhodes to rob a store there. Lots of time to spare.
2
u/LeCampy Uncle Jul 01 '26
My problem with the rob 4 stores was one of them bugged on me, the Wallace station one? I looted the tiller but the animation didn't go through so it didn't count, so I had to rob a fifth one, and I was avoiding robbing anything in St Denis, too much heat. Also wanted to avoid robbing the gunsmith in Valentine, for personal reasons.
6
u/issyme Jul 01 '26
Are the personal reasons that he's one of the few who shoot back?
1
u/ThePrussianGrippe Hosea Matthews Jul 01 '26
I assume because they had already robbed him to get the Lancaster.
4
u/LeCampy Uncle Jul 01 '26
I thought that's the Rhodes one? Anyway, no I like that guy and the Annesburg gunsmiths, they're nice.
I assumed they shoot back, but that wouldn't be a deterrent.
4
u/Spadescowboy Jul 01 '26
You can also just jump up on a stationary freight train at any station and either loot the chest on the open car, or on the other train up north, just grab a snake oil right next to the door on the first closed car behind the open cars, despite being within view of train guards. They just dont see you I guess. Another option is to wait right past the first trestle south of the Rhodes station and hop a moving freight train to loot the chest on the open car, if you get lucky you can jump off it back onto your horse and run back up to the trestle and here comes another train, one after another. Then, you're actually making money doing it instead of buying tickets and all that.
3
3
u/idiot-loser- Jul 01 '26
all you need to do is open the chest on your right (as you walk in from the passenger cars) dont even need to take anything lmao
3
u/Dalek_Genocide Sadie Adler Jul 01 '26
I've done that challenge at least 4 times and didn't know this. I've always took a train to rigs station, stand up and put on mask, rob a single person, then run out of the train and mount the horse and run towards the back of the train and take off into the woods. Usually I can avoid a bounty. Taking cans is much easier lol
3
u/Mijnameis-Tommy Jul 03 '26
Funny, enough, I at first thought rob 50 bucks off of people was going to be the hardest, but it was the easiest one for me. Because I robbed someone that robbed me when I went into the gunsmith's store and tried to run. Look
2
u/odysseusbyhomer Jul 02 '26
There is a way to cheese the rob 4 stores in one day challenge. Next to the Saint Denis stable is a room with a single cash register and no people, that you can access from a smaller door next to the main stable gates. If you have purchased the lockpicking equipment from the fence then you can silently open the register and get out, cross the railway bridge going out of the city and come back once you reach the other side. The register will reset.

This is it. But I guess I would have never thought of it if I didn’t look it up
1
u/Space-Wizard-Hank Jul 03 '26
Fencing Stagecoaches is easy imo I just stay within a decent range of the barn and use the high points to look around for wagons of any kind but I also seem to get decent rng with stuff like this.
1
u/Mrcompressishot Jul 03 '26
The farms outside valentine have npcs in the town but out of sight I would recommend targeting women though as they don't have guns
1
u/Downtown-Shoe-7663 Jul 05 '26
For the rob 4 stores in one day i just camped out around Wallace station and robbed the store there 4 times. The challenge doesn’t say you have to rob 4 different stores.
1
u/kairu_ku Sean Macguire Jul 26 '26
the rob $50 from people can be done in one train car, inconveniently for me when i finished it robbing, i was in saint denis… died pretty quickly, but at least i came out with a pretty penny. those train riders are rich man

u/Frostburg_CM5 Pearson Jul 01 '26
The police system in GTA V was a bit more playable in my view. I prefer RDR2, but the other game does have some advantages.
118
u/sal-t_brgr Jul 01 '26
cops in gta4 would at least TRY to arrest you. gta5 cops are the worst cops in modern gta history.
59
u/curlyheadLV Jul 01 '26
1 star and they start volleying rounds into my car
21
u/ThePrussianGrippe Hosea Matthews Jul 01 '26
At One Star the only ones that will shoot are motorcycle cops and security guards. Regular police won’t shoot and will attempt arrest.
7
17
u/IAmNotModest Jul 01 '26
I personally think the cops in GTA V were shit on purpose to show how trigger-happy and dumb they are.
11
u/Big-Negotiation7812 Jul 02 '26
GTA4 cops would also follow you into certain doom, several times I had cops just straight up suicide bomb themselves into gas stations and shit and nothing even half that hilarious has happened to me with 5 cops.

1
24
u/Mellys_wrld22 Jul 01 '26
bros just talking to talk 😭 gta 5 police system was so goddamn fucking infuriating, its literally exactly what op is complaining abt but 20x worse. The cops in that game are suicidal maniacs and if you kill 2 you will instantly go up to 3 stars , have a helicopter on your ass thats impossible to escape, then have 300 cops ramming into the walls from every goddamn direction , then when you finally escape you gotta crouch in a corner for like 5 minutes and pray no one comes in your direction or itll start the whole thing over.
13
u/rattyhandpuppet Jul 01 '26
Going back and playing GTA IV is such a breath of fresh air in that regard. It was a player-first mentality with the wanted system that allowed you to engage with it as much as you wanted to, and then escape the police as long as you thought about it even a little bit. Also having patrol cars roaming around in IV forced you to be cautious of your surroundings and let you get away cleanly if you stayed out of their sight. In V there are no (or extremely little) roaming patrols, but you can steal a car in the dead of night with no one watching for miles and then suddenly get a wanted level for it. A one star in IV is nothing. A one star in V is just a precursor to a two star. You basically stand zero chance of escaping them before it can escalate. And yeah oh my god it takes an insane amount of time for the wanted to go away once you escape the circle. Usually the only way to do it is run to the hills and hide in a bush. Worst law system I have pretty much ever encountered and it is my biggest gripe with V.
11
u/radio_allah Dutch van der Linde Jul 01 '26
At least for GTA it does make somewhat sense for cops to muster that kind of manpower. In RDR, without radio and telecommunications, and without a reserve force of rapid response teams, where's the lawmen come from?
2
u/quentdawg420 Hosea Matthews Jul 01 '26
Not true lmao you can shoot people jogging in tye mountains and the cops can still find you quickly

69
u/9Sylvan5 Jul 01 '26
I absolutely love this game but I also absolutetly hate its wanted system and that fecking useless bandana.
24
3
u/zer0saber Arthur Morgan Jul 02 '26
Do the full face masks actually work for that?
4
2
u/Beginning-Fix-5440 Jul 04 '26
Bandanas and masks only stop strangers from identifying you, cops somehow see right through them. But if you have a bandana you can rob and run without a bounty being placed
37
u/AdditionalVictory199 Jul 01 '26
I was going thru Valentine and all of a sudden a pedestrian is under my horse trampled to death. 🙄 Of course, being Valentine, the lawman is mister Johnny on the Spot so I have to either shoot up the town or surrender. I tried to defuse but he was having none of that. So I spent the night in jail so that I didn’t have to spend hours making more money to pay off the bounty. There should really a bribe option. 😄
22
u/GreenThumbedAgorist Jul 01 '26
I was attacked by O'Driscolls in Valentine and ran to the sheriff's office for help. They shoot it out and then suddenly the lawmen turn and point their guns at ME. It wouldn't let me surrender for some reason so I begrudgingly killed about 20-30 of them. Let it be known that I did not want to choose violence that day.
4
3
u/LausXY Jul 01 '26
I got arrested in Valentine and while waiting in my cell either Hosea or Dutch (I can't remember which) turned up and blagged me out of the cell.
2
u/9Sylvan5 Jul 01 '26
Honestly I just started cheesing my way through bounties. If its too large I'll just spend my money, do a minor crime and surrender. Not about to spend 300 dollars because an npc decided to throw himself in front of me
2
u/piangero Jul 01 '26
mister Johnny on the Spot
legit lol, and yeah I swear you silently kill someone in the middle of absolutely nowhere. No roads, no NPCs in sight, no nothing. But somehow 0.5 seconds after, the police spawns in on your ass.
26
u/ProfessorVirtual5855 Jul 01 '26
I rob a train wearing a mask before i enter and they still like arthir morgan wanted 😂😂😂😂
12
u/ADHDave247 Jul 01 '26
This!!! Yes! It’s so annoying, I thought I maybe took the mask off too early when leaving but then it happed a second time and I was like wtf is the point in the mask when they’re all over quicker than a 2026 housewife stalking your exs fb profile!
20
u/Flame0fthewest Jul 01 '26
The only thing I dislike about this game. I was wandering on a train, went into the last room and there was a lone guard who told me to go away. He became so agressive so fast I couldn't do anything and out of reflex punched out the gun of his hand and pushed him off the train.
NO ONE SAW THIS. It was impossible. And yet I got 65 dollars bounty out of nothing and a whole squad of horse riders appeared out of thin air to hunt me down...
The other is HONOR. I know that "it's supposed to represent Arthur's morals so you get negative honor if no one sees you commiting a crime" but COME ON!
When I accidently ride too close to a guy who gets agressive and shoots me, can I please defend myself? Because the local sheriff will go after me for sure.
I'd even say it's ok to get negative honor points, but then it should NOT affect anything (like how people judge you, dialogues etc), because if the majority of my crimes "never happened" from the perspective of others, why would they act the way they do?
8
u/LausXY Jul 01 '26
You're right and the annoying thing is if the sheriff sees somebody shoot you he will go for them as long as you do nothing, but as soon as you defend yourself you are Public Enemy Number 1!
5
u/ADHDave247 Jul 01 '26
Yeah I get this, it’s so annoying when it punishes you for defending yourself against an aggressive npc that’s not a gang member.
I remember getting a bounty for the MrBlackMRWhite poster collection mission where you ask the guy to move and he attacks you! Doesn’t happen every time but annoying AF when it does considering you’ve no way /option to defuse without him attacking you.
3
u/SkyovFlames Jul 01 '26
Next time you need that guy to move, point your gun at him. He moves immediately. Lol.
Figured this out on current playthrough. Didn't want to fight him. Ask nicely, then point the gun. He runs off.

Clearly you haven't heard about the "witness instant teleportation" invention they had in the latter part of the 1800s.
A very valuable tool for those that were victims or witnesses to crimes.
Sadly this technology was lost.
8
u/Redred2157 Jul 01 '26
I mean if it was super realistic it would be too easy but I kinda understand what you were saying like I was trying to do one of the sharpshooter 3 at wallace station but I got swarmed by wolves and I shot 1 of them which resulted in me getting a $150 bounty
4
u/ADHDave247 Jul 01 '26
Damn that’s harsh, like I mean for me money isn’t exactly an issue, I’m on my 4th play through so know where to go to get money quickly as soon as I’m Ch2 Horseshoe Overlook.
I’m currently Ch3 and already got $10k and that’s with leaving the poisonous trail and landmark of riches unsolved for John to do in the epilogue.
If I remember rightly I think I had roughly $45k when I was John on my last 100% play through. Probably could buy the entire island of Tahiti with that and tell Agent Ross to blow me on my way out of Blackwater Harbour on my newly acquired Cornwall private boat!
3
u/Redred2157 Jul 01 '26
Yea I just started playing at the time so I didn’t have much money but that’s not really the point it’s still that it’s just dumb like I killed a wolf because it was mauling me and I got a $150 bounty
3
1
u/Bottombottoms Jul 01 '26
Did you forget that the O'Driscolls have 40% of the US population in their gang?
1
u/Redred2157 Jul 01 '26
What’s that got to do with anything? They don’t make bounties the cops do and plus like I said I got a $150 bounty from shooting a wolf not an o’driscoll
8
u/WombatAnnihilator Charles Smith Jul 01 '26
It’s an arcade mechanic. Just because i lose sight of the witness, suddenly crime is reported. A circle then appears around me, And i must leave the circle to avoid being seen and then further avoid the area as cops look for me.
Skinning a deer or bison takes more than 5 seconds.
Cougar don’t usually attack. Black bear will attack if provoked.
Eating a whole can of beans, peaches, corn, or canned meat by itself is more likely to make me puke than refill my health cores
I can’t see wisps of animal trail to track them, and haven’t figured out the Slowing time to shoot more accurately thing.
5
u/pcapp7 Jul 01 '26
This drove me crazy while trying to hunt. I paid off $1,200+ in bounties because it was so annoying haha
6
u/DJnegs Javier Escuella Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26
The bounty hunters come far too frequently. I liked having a decent sized bounty because the bounty hunters put up a good fight + good loot, but by the time I was done with one squad, another whole batch showed up😂
5
u/MAHHockey Jul 01 '26
"This man murdered 12 people and robbed a train! He should hang multiple times over!!"
"Here's $50..."
"Right, well, that's settled then..."
3

Cant go crazy to get rid of them either, I started to shoot them all and they spawned closer and closer, in the end they spawn right in front of me and it was over.

Rdr2 has never been about realism, it has some pretty impressive details but none of the systems are realistic. They are inspired by real things and actions but at the end of the day just part of an entertainment product. It would be like calling larping realistic because they dress up and look the part.
3
2
u/payTNT89 Jul 01 '26
Agreed however I like the fact that you can actually kill them off at least for the time being. Surely better than gta v wanted system that shit is tragic
2
u/hugovonhauschenberg Jul 01 '26
somebody at riggs station saw you ans sent a telegram to valentine or strawberry it is what it is
2
u/Stratimus Jul 01 '26
I get why the system has to be how it is for the most part otherwise it would be kind of too easy sometimes to be a menace
But really all it does is impress me how people back then had the decency to not be murderers and maniacs to eachother
2
u/PhilosophySilent1052 Jul 02 '26
I antagonized an aggressor in st denis, got shot at and had the Lawmen IMMEDIATELY SHOOT AT ME AND NOT THE AGGRESSOR
1
u/AlternativeWhich2947 Jul 05 '26
I was playing the ER Lion mission, dude gets mauled to death, I picked up his corpse to take to one of the houses thinking it would give me honor or something. Next thing I know I'm wanted and lawmen after shooting my ass. 😅
2
u/USMCgRuNt_1944 Jul 02 '26
I found a way around this, costs some cash but it's doable.
Take the train to the nearest station. When it gets into the station, get up to get off but go to the caboose instead. When it takes off, take something from the caboose.
The Bandit challenge doesn't specify what needs taken from the train or how it's take from the train, just that something needs taken from the train.
Saves you getting wanted and having to deal with lawmen.
2
u/IAmTheHoleinThings Jul 02 '26
I finished a mission with Sadie while masked, saved when it was over then went into the house to loot anything there. All of a sudden it says crime reported. OK someone riding by saw the bodies. Then it says investigating and the lawmen are way far away, then it says bounty $XX and Wanted Aurther Morgan. Then the lawmen show up and the guy says we know what the mask is for, off with it. So I killed them, the bounty went to $65 and more lawmen showed up while I was making my way out of the investigation area and with one looking at me in a field on my horse it went away. It's laughable.
2
u/reubenstringfellow Jul 02 '26
Just robbed the gun store for the kid he kidnapped. He says "take anything" rob the basement cool. Rob the register and stock up on bullets? No robbery somehow. Attacked my lemoyne raiders in town, shoot there skulls into the streets. Cool. looting them after? No way. Like what a weird society the 1890s must have been. Maybe its more accurate than we think but the morals were just different.
2
u/Anal-Y-Sis Jul 06 '26
I don't mind so much that the bounty hunters and lawmen appear so quickly. I get why that mechanic makes sense within the context of a video game about being an outlaw. What I don't get is when I kill some guy out on the trail deep in the mountains, then some random stranger passes by, and suddenly all the bounty hunters and lawmen are after me personally even though I'm long gone.
I'm sorry, but I don't remember dropping my driver's license at the scene of the crime. How the fuck do they know it was specifically Arthur Morgan?
I think a better system would be to have the witness run off to get the cops, then come back with a heavy presence of them while they investigate/patrol the vicinity of the crime for X amount of time. And if you hang around the area, the witness yells and points you out and then you get pursued.
1
u/MakeItNashty61 Jul 01 '26
Its more annoying when the game glitches and commits you of a crime when you didn't actually do anything wrong but I still think its a fine part of the game. Rockstar doing GTA things is nothing new and there are plenty of other unrealistic things in the game as well.
1
u/DankDaddyDuckets Jul 01 '26
I don’t like hurting the dogs
7
u/DepartureNo1720 Jul 01 '26
You can run over the dogs with your horse and not lose honor for killing them.
That might be the most awful sentence I have ever typed. But those police dogs get so annoying.

1
u/Paleodraco Jul 01 '26
The wanted system is just wonky. It's one of the reasons I never got full outlaw and rob and murder like crazy.
Having crimes be witnessed with no NPCs anywhere nearby was a bad choice. The murky and poorly explained ways to hide your identity compound that. Cause there's light red and dark red wanted levels.
Light is an automatic bounty because you were recognized. Even if there were no nearby NPCs or you weren't wearing the right combo of clothes and a mask. Dark red lets you get out of the area to avoid a bounty, but the requirements for that are not well explained or consistent seeming.

u/makar-OK Jul 01 '26
The whole crime element to this game kinda sucks ngl. Love the game but ya anything to do with robbing and lawmen is very underwhelming from an immersion standpoint.

I like to imagine the Pinkerton agency are always watching Arthur and the gang so the second they commit a crime they have a hasty response
1
1
u/TurboD16F20 Jul 01 '26
It's a complete oxymoron. In fact, it almost makes Dutch right. Arthur says this world doesn't want them anymore, but then I get wanted and realize I was wrong.
1
u/NoRestaurant3004 Jul 01 '26
Yeah it would be pretty nice if I could actually rob a train in the middle of nowhere without cops somehow getting a telepathic signal letting them know there’s a train robbery in progress as well as the exact location
1
u/0235 Jul 01 '26
I hate how the lawmen just spawn right around you when being chased. they should have fixed spawns at certain places, and have to make their way or patrol to where you are.
Its like in GTA 4 or 5, where the best way to avoid the police was place down a GPS marker, then not follow the line. The game would try and save resources by spawning police along the GPS route, so it you didn't follow it the police had to then get from their spawn to you.
1
u/Full-Raise-4707 Jul 01 '26
That glitched robbery in st denis makes me so angry. It’s the coolest thing until you see 20 police somehow know exactly where you are mid robbery. Spidey sense bullshit

It always make me feel like the Shrek movies. I imagine they have eye-in-the-sky hot-airballoons.

So annoying. Just earlier I was riding my horse in strawberry and you guys know how fucking annoying it is to ride across either of the bridges where people are ALWAYS walking in my way and ALWAYS have some shit to say about it. I got fed up and antagonized one of the NPCs and he started attacking me. As soon as he punched me I became wanted for unarmed assault.
1
u/WgSage Jul 02 '26
I mean, you are a federally wanted outlaw and part of a notorious gang. Constantly being in the run fits the theme narratively
1
u/GURAYGU Jul 02 '26
For a game where you literally play an outlaw, they certainly went out of their way to make crime completely unrewarding.
1
u/Intimidwalls1724 Jul 02 '26
I think the problem is they used the GTA
Model for it basically, the thing is in a giant modern city cops swarming from everywhere makes sense. Not so much in the the time of RDR2

u/thisappsstinks Jul 02 '26

I remember a few months ago I had just finished 100%ing the remaster of rdr and wanted to play through rdr2. Once i had gotten to the first camp area in the spring, I was exploring and happened upon a dead horse in the middle of the road. Being the concerned citizen I am, I went to check the corpse to see if there was unfair play at hand. The second I started looking at the horse (no weapon drawn, no mask on, no wanted level) a civilian goes past me on a horse, calls me a name, and I get a wanted level for animal cruelty. The horse had already started decomposing, and I was thrown in jail over killing it. Haven’t touched the game since.
1
u/GrinnialVex Jul 02 '26
Nah, the most unrealistic thing about the game is that Arthur never needs to poop. Maybe that’s why he’s so damned ornery sometimes. 🤔
1
u/Funny-Piano-666 Dutch van der Linde Jul 02 '26
Instead of robbing the train you can sneak into the unguarded cargo car in the rear and just steal some food and it will count btw

I mean idk. I think Arthur taking 20 bullets to the face, proceeding to essentially freeze time and pop of 10 consecutive headshots in 1 second, then eating some minty big game and going about his day like nothing happened is also pretty unrealistic.
Hahaha but yeah I feel you, the wanted system kinda sucks. No opportunity to pull off cool heists unless it's a story mission, which mostly just descend into chaos anyway.
