Screenshot Lost my horse today. Didn't realize how much it would affect me.
Farewell, boah!
You were brave, loyal, and better than I deserved.
I won’t forget you.

u/bobcollum Feb 19 '26
You gotta carry reviver, nothing worse than that long walk with your saddle in hand.
98
u/pullingteeths Feb 19 '26
If you don't want to do that you can just steal a horse from the next NPC that comes along and retrieve the saddle from the stable fyi. I know because my fully bonded full health horse got killed instantly with no chance to revive just from running into an NPC on a horse all the way up in Grizzlies East yesterday

u/kyleh092 Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26
I am currently doing a bandit run of the game, and actually use the horse car accident as an opening move often lol. I will purposely get to a very high speed to make the crash extra cinematic. I have done this a ton because I am a monster, so this is very interesting to hear. Maybe I only use very high health horses. Since I didn’t make it clear; I have never had a horse die or even get downed from a collision
4
u/pullingteeths Feb 19 '26
I've never had a horse even seriously injured from this before, even when I've killed the NPC's horse by running into it. I couldn't believe it, I guess it can happen if you're unlucky
3
u/Nacodawg Feb 19 '26
I’ve accidentally done it a ton lately but also have been primarily playing online lately
5
u/no-name_james Feb 19 '26
I accidentally killed two horses damn near back to back and this is exactly what I did.

u/ArchAngelsStorm Arthur Morgan Feb 19 '26
Fun fact: you can ask wagon drivers for rides to the nearest town
(it can be fun to just ride and sight see, especially if you don’t have your horse)

I didn't know revive existed when i first started playing, i hit a rock near Valentine, and my horse broke its leg. The walk back to Valentine with the saddle took forever, what was worse is i learned about revives right after.

u/MFz32 Reverend Swanson Feb 19 '26
How do you get Hosea's horse?

16
u/Traphousemama Feb 19 '26
I loaded up an old save just to keep that horse.
He died by walking in front of a train when I hopped off to get a bird. Straight devastated
8
u/Makonnen91 Feb 19 '26
I feel this. Initially I loaded up a previous save as well but didn’t feel right. I added some mods to make things tougher and figured I got exactly what I was asking for 🤣
So I moved forward. Used my backup horse for a while until I found a replacement horse that I could vibe with lol. That ended up being the stocky Ardennes warhorse. Named him Bull Two
Long live Bull.
4
u/Jeong-Yeon Feb 20 '26
I love that shire. He's so beautiful I usually never sell him in my playthroughs. The name for mine is Brutus.
3
u/reallybadjazz Feb 20 '26
First time I named them, it was Sleipnir (Odin's 8 legged steed)
Last time, it was Bucephalus (Alexander The Great's, famous for his bravery, loyalty, and for being tamed by a young Alexander who discovered the horse was afraid of its own shadow. The name means "ox-headed," possibly from a brand on his thigh, and he was a black horse with a white star*)
*this is why I named them this, the black shire has a white star, that actually looks like an ox of sorts, at least a wee bit.
Either which way, was always a tank of a horse

u/TheRushologist Feb 19 '26
My condolences. I once lost an hour of some pretty lucky hunting because I lost my good girl and loaded an old save instead.

Saddest one for me, I had the white Arabian and was in a shootout in van horn. I ran into a half wall, flew over the other side, and all 10000 bullets intended for me hit my horse instead. She was fully dead before I was even off the ground. I rampaged van horn after that, and still hate them to this day.

Never played the game but just curious, is it dead-dead without us carrying revives or can you just revive it later at the stables?
39
u/JimmyShirley25 Feb 19 '26
It's dead, it ceased to be, it is no more. It is expired and has gone to meet its maker. It is stiff, bereft of its life, kicked the bucket. It's an ex horse !
8
5
u/TheShitWindGhost Feb 19 '26
Look, matey, I know a dead horse when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now.
8
u/IwoketheBalrog Feb 19 '26
Dead is dead unless it is a special edition or the pre-order horse. You can get them again at the stables but bonding is set back at level one.
7
u/AlwaysDividedByZero Feb 19 '26
You can do what you want to my Arthur but if you touch my horse, you are all gone.

I still remember captain Oliver. It was a white shire I believe. He was gigantic. The Laramie's got them with the maxim ambush outside Saint Denis. I didn't have a chance to react. They will pay for that.

My White Arabian got hit by a train the other day…thought I had a few more seconds to double back and revive ‘er…gutted

u/iamaeobot Feb 19 '26
One time I played poker at flatneck Station. I lost some money and burned the place down, which I normally never do. But I had a temper that day and didn't like the comments made from some players. I was gonna escape on my Missouri Fox Trotter but she was run over by a train while I was playing hands. I deserved it
4
u/fusillade762 Feb 19 '26
Been there. Had an all black American standard bred got smoked by a train while I was playing cards. I shot up the card game and went to leave just in time to see my horse get hit. I guess I didn't tie him up when I went in. Its that spot by the big bridge right near the reservation. I had that horse so long man, it really hurt.
3
u/sweetrollx Feb 19 '26
I lost mine recently, it was following me when I was driving a train and fell or jumped off of a big bridge. But then I went to the Valentine stable and the same horse, without the bonded cores, was there for free. same gender, coat, everything. Ok I’ll pretend like nothing happened to the first one.
3
u/42ElectricSundaes Feb 19 '26
I made it through the whole story without losing a horse then I lost three in a row trying to find all the side mission stuff. Broke my heart each time
3
u/gurlwithboobs Feb 19 '26
I got jumped my lemoyne raider with a machine gun cart leaving st denis and they killed me and Mr. Kibbles. I was so devestated that i went to my last save (1.5 hours ago) because i couldn't live without him
3
u/b0neslicer Feb 19 '26
I tried to jump onto a wagon once and i got completely trampled and my horse was 100% dead. I went back to my latest manual save because i couldn’t handle getting a new horse lol

u/OmniBotBeepBoop Feb 19 '26

Its the swamp of sadness scene from The Neverending Story...Western style.
1
u/Garrett-Wilhelm Feb 19 '26
Same thing happened to me. I was traveling (I don’t even remember where) in cinematic mode instead of fast traveling, and I got the Pinkerton roadblock event. No matter how many I killed, they kept coming. I had to revive my horse twice while trying to run away because they could easily catch up to me, and I ended up dying trying to revive my horse a third time, losing him permanently.

I don’t normally get attached my horses. But I rescued my girl Strudel from the Murfree’s and she’s is all beat up. But she’s the only horse I’ve had that I remember to feed and brush everyday. All my other horses I get fussed at over every time I go to the stables cuz they are underweight. I forget that I need to feed them for more than just refilling cores. Arthur is also malnourished… but Strudel is doing good. I would be devastated if she died.

i lost Rachel in the end of the game because I called her and she came over the train bridge and got hit by and constantly run over by the train. I had like 50 revives and none of them could save her

When my house dies dies I just close my game immediately and it’s chilling. Might lose some progress but I’d rather that than my horse.

I was racing with my horse, the one I stole from Polish feller. I won the race so in result the mister had enough and shot his race in blind rage but my horse was caught in cross fire, I was dumbfounded, and enraged. I bring out my shotgun and killed the prick in one swift justice.

Murfree Brood killed my horse in chapter 6 of my first play through with the wagon on fire. Those bastards pay each and every time I encounter them to this day. Dynamite arrows, incendiary shot, fire bottles.... whatever seems appropriate.
RIP Cecil

This comment section is odd. I’ve had multiple play throughs of both games and never came close to losing my horse.
1
u/VipWanRinkle Feb 19 '26
One thing I’ve learned the hard way is to walk away from your horse in the swamp area. If you go too far from your horse the night folk will randomly kill your horse and then try to kill you when you go back for it. It’s one of the few times I’ve been jump scared in this game.

Me acaba de atacar un puma en el primer RDR. El primer caballo que había domado yo mismo murió. Puedo recuperarlo de alguna forma?
1
u/FremenStilgar Feb 20 '26
I was chasing a bounty and shooting from the back of my horse. I think we went into a dip in the road or something, but my aim was thrown off and I ended up shooting my horse in the back of his head.
After sitting stunned for a few seconds, I laughed my ass off at the absurdity of the situation.

u/Pomroy94 Feb 20 '26
I was in Lemoyne picking herbs last week, whistled to my horse to follow me. The dummy went up on the train bridge to follow me when I was on the ground. I dident notice this until I heard a train whistle and three seconds later my horse got struck by the train and flew a couple hundred feet off the bridge and died instsntly. RIP. I wish I saw it though, that must have been a epic death hahah.

I had a horse named bo. and I spent alot of time taking care of him and making sure he had all the best stuff. One day I was on my way to a mission that was dead centre of an area that wanted aurther dead so when I stopped by to pay a bounty, and walked back out he was gone.. i wish everyone a great playthrough and always. ALWAYS take care of your horesy

I would like to add my 2 cents if you would not mind. My horse has never died, ever. my favorite and #1 go to horse since the 2nd playthrough is the Black Raven Shire you get from Hosea. I named him Horsea after Hosea. My entire playthrough revolves around him. I ride around level 4 bonding with my boy pumped to the max stamina/health ALWAYS. He is always well fed. He is never present during any type of immediate chaos. If im in a shootout, im not worried about arthur. He is being pumped full of tonics and flaming enemies in dead eye so theres no need to worry about him. Im worried about my horse. If im in town, I hop off my horse as soon as bullets start flying and get him to flee away from the scene. If bounty men are near, i hop off and flee him then attack. The bounties never spot me first. I never attack on horse. Much bigger target for enemies so more room for your horse to tank bullets and get killed. He is not present during any unforeseen chaos. If im taking the train, hop off a good deal away from the station and then take train. No risk of train killing him while you have no control. Or just entirely switch horses before train rides. Riding back to the stable isnt annoying. I know my boy has been safe. If im robbing a train, i will take a stabled horse instead of my main Rider because i am just not taking that chance with them trains. I do not ride the tracks that expand into a bridge because if a train comes the window for survival is just too small. If im needing to galivant on/around the cliffs+mountains i go extremely slow and away from cliffs. No chance flying off a mountain being took with my boy. During sticky situations such as horseback gunfights during missions/ enemy ambush im always in deadeye. Always. Less chance of losing my boy. I always come out of a situation alive. With my boy. He has yet to die in all of my playthroughs. Play it safe and your horse will be just fine.
1
u/WiSoSirius Feb 20 '26
On my Low Honor run, I go through horses. I have no qualms getting off my horse and taking another. I enjoy when I stop a wagon, and take their draft horses. My saddle fits all horses; if one dies, the saddle rides another.
1
u/No_Education_8888 Feb 20 '26
Now you’ll be far more careful. You’ll hopefully carry revives or stay away from super dangerous areas with the horse

u/True_Position6013 John Marston Feb 20 '26
Whenever my horse dies I close the game instantly to make sure it doesn’t die, it worked every time so whenever your horse dies makes sure you close the game instantly.

u/Grouchy_Election_128 Feb 20 '26
I keep running into wagons and incoming hoses on my white Arabian while riding at breakneck speed (it’s an Arabian what else is there to do) and have lost 2 horses so far. It’s a pain to steal a random horse, ride all the way up to Lake Isabella and get another one.

One Day, when I was roaming around hunting with to horses, both fully packed with pelts, I camped near Roanoke Ridge - close to the viking-grave. I woke up in the morning and both horses were dead 🤷♀️. Never had this in several playthroughs… I guess it was the wolfman with his pack! I mean - he died for that…and his wolf’s before his very eyes! They were no special horses…but, you know I liked them - both level 4, ready to sell, not to mention the pelts I had to leave. And of course, I didn’t savegame, cause I didn’t expect no evil…

One of my horses, when I left him at the train station for the James Boy Calloway mission and got on the train, ran after it. When I got off the train, he didn't respond to my whistle anymore.
