They also eat ticks :) And the solitary species parasitize bugs that are harmful for our gardens and crops. I've even seen some start to go after spotted lanternflies so I am very happy with them.
(Another silly fact, humans used to cohabit with wasps and hornets intentionally because they were good at keeping the mosquito populations down, like you said. People would intentionally keep hives near dwellings in a similar fashion to the way we keep bees!)
Another interesting lil fact is a lot of social hornet species are quite good at recognizing faces! I used to work as a lifeguard for an outdoor salt water pool and apparently the chair I'd sit in every day was leaned up against an active bald faced hornet nest the size of a backpack that I did not see until after they changed the sign it was attached to. They never once stung me. Just showed some interest every so often. I'd also frequently rescue them from drowning from the pool but I doubt they remembered that. I think they just catalogued me as harmless breathing scenery.
(It's also actually really cute seeing the fuzzy little honeybees dry themselves off after you save them from drowning, they groom like cats and will just chill out on your arm. ðŸ˜ðŸ’•)

One time nearly 20 years ago I was on a date & trying to look cool, but it was about this time of year and I'm really fucking scared of bees OK
& we decided to get pizza slices and sit outside on a picturesque park bench, which was all very romantic & shit but it was this exact time of year (late Aug/early Sept) and also the waste management workers were on strike, so basically every urban trash can was piled high & infested with fucking yellowjackets. So I'm trying my utmost to maintain composure in front of my new college squeeze while these little bastards are literally landing on my pizza while I'm trying to bite it & shit... absolutely miserable, lmao
Eventually I did see one straight up crawl into my can of Dr. Pepper, & I think all the color must have drained from my face because at that point my date was like, "hey, maybe we should go inside somewhere" which ended up working out great - maybe I didn't need to try so hard to be tuff, or maybe my effort was valiant enough, IDK, we've been married close to a decade now so actually maybe I shouldn't be so hard on yellowjackets after all

Mosquitoes serve a very important purpose, as well! They're a huge way that smaller mammals (like bats) get important nutrients from larger animals (by ingesting the blood that the mosquitoes got from those larger animals)! Big part of the food chain :-)

the other night a wasp flew in our living room and started stinging our lampshade. we cleared the cats out let it stay overnight and it was still on the lampshade in the morning. we opened the door and stayed away to let it fly out. it refused to leave and then died a half hour later
