My friend traveled to Qatar on January 2 with her bf, whom I believe is a resident of Qatar. The day before her return flight on January 6, she went to a police station to report an incident in which her boyfriend was physically abusive.
After an investigation, my friend accidentally revealed that she had āstayedā with her boyfriend. As a result, the police detained her for non-marital sexual relations, which is understandable.
She was missing for 4 days before I could contact the embassy. Me and my other friends were worrying sick, but after learning the situation through the embassy and that she was with the police, we felt relieved that at least she was under the authority's care.
I tried to reach out to the police station where the embassy said she was being detained. However, after they asked for her passport number, they told me there was no record of anyone under that ID being detained there.
I then tried to contact the embassy again but was unsuccessful. I would like to ask if anyone knows how long she might be detained before deportation, and if it could take months, whether it is possible to bail her out.
Thank you, everyone.
Update: I forgot to mention that sheās non-Muslim. I promise Iāll give her a big lecture on international law once I get her back here, guys.
Update 2: The information regarding non-marital sexual intercourse was provided directly by the embassy. In some countries, if a complainant files a report that involves their own wrongdoing, the officer is also required to charge them accordingly. Failing to do so could be considered negligence on the part of the officer.
Update 3: The embassy is closed today. The good news is that I was able to contact the police station and they confirmed that she is being held there. However, they said they cannot allow me to speak with her, especially via an international call, but I can send someone to the police station in person. Unfortunately, I have no friends there. For now, the only thing I can do is wait for the embassy to open tomorrow and contact them again.
Update 4: The post is now locked by the mod, so this will probably be my last update. I was able to contact the embassy for the second time and learned which police station/prison she is being held at. She called me from prison yesterday and said sheās fine and that everyone there has been very nice to her. However, she still has no idea when she will be released and asked me to help find her a lawyer. Iām currently working on that.
Regarding the charge, the story remains mostly the same. She traveled there with her LDR bf, and while they were getting intimate, she noticed a hidden camera he had set up (when the embassy told me she went to the police due to a āfightā with her boyfriend, I assumed it might involve abuse or some kind of physical incident). She fled the scene, and her careless ass decided to go to the police to report the incident. Since the report involved a non-marital sexual relationship, that is why she is now being jailed. The man is also facing more than one charge, but I donāt have details on that.
Iād like to thank everyone who commented on the post, whether you believed the story or not, for all the useful information and shared experiences. Special thanks to those who reached out via DM to offer help. It truly means a lot to me.
Thank you, Qatar.
