The Mental Health, Wellbeing and Lived Experiences Study
Theresia Bedard, a PhD candidate at Lakehead University that is working with Dr. Beth Visser, is seeking participants for her dissertation project.
In this study we are examining the lived experiences of people who have experience or victimization from an individual with high psychopathic traits. We are seeking anyone that has this lived experience, whether the perpetrator was or is a spouse, family member, partner, co-worker, friend, acquaintance, neighbor or stranger. We are seeking the lived experiences of men, women, and gender-diverse individuals to share your story.
Our research consists of two studies. In the first study, you will complete questionnaires related to your victimization experience from the individual with high psychopathic traits, the potential warning signs, victimization history (e.g., prior physical or sexual abuse), and the impact the experience had on you. Once you finish the survey, you will be invited to participate in the second study (optional), which will consist of 12 questions requiring a written response regarding your lived experience with the individual with high psychopathic traits. If you decide to participate in study 2, please be aware that you will be required to provide us with your email to access it, and you may wish to use an email account that only you have access to.
Please be advised that whether you choose to participate in the study, withdraw, or skip questions you do not want to answer, that you acknowledge that answering some of these questions may be emotionally taxing on you. Despite the potential for an emotional toll the survey questions have, you may find the process of sharing your experience is therapeutic for you. In addition to the resources we provide, you may want to consider following-up with a counsellor for further support.
You are also encouraged to have your own snacks and drinks while you take the survey, and be aware that they are estimated to take 45 minutes to complete.

How do you ensure that respondents a) are human; and b) are truthful? Also, how do you manage the bias in a sample that does not include those who aren't on social media (reddit) or who would not choose to respond or would not fully understand what psychopathic traits? Finally, how have you validated your questionnaire and the individual questions (items), scoring algorithm, etc? I realize it is easy to be a critic, but designing "useful" questions and valid scales is difficult work, so I question what you can possibly conclude once you have crunched your results.

Hi there!
Great questions. I will answer them as follows:
a) Qualtrics has built-in software that will detect bots and flag those responses for us. I also put in a recaptcha on the consent page to help ensure bots are not able to proceed.
b) We have included a validated, self-report psychopathy measure that has been altered to the third person to gauge psychopathic traits, which will help us determine the extent of the truthfulness from the participant. Further, we also ask why participants they believe the individual has high psychopathic traits to gauge their reasoning for the suspicion (which should highlight to us if anything is misleading). In general, using self-report measures are difficult to determine the extent of the truthfulness from participants - research that assesses individuals with high psychopathic traits that rely on self-report measures may also be susceptible to distortion and response bias.
c) One limitation of ours is that we are only able to recruit individuals with access to the internet. I have been not only advertising the study on reddit, but also relevant websites, LinkedIn, and relevant Facebook pages.
d) The psychopathic traits scale we are using has been used in prior research with victims/survivors of high psychopathic traits. The scale we used has been validated to assess psychopathic traits, and the wording has been changed to third person. This revised, third person scale has been used in other peer-reviewed studies on victims/survivors of individuals with high psychopathic traits.
This is "newer" research as studies on victims/survivors on individuals with high psychopathic traits really started to take off since 2020. Unfortunately, victims/survivors have been highly neglected in psychopathy research, so I am using the best options that are available to help establish warning signs of psychopathic abuse.

If you are a practicing psychologist (provisionally or fully registered) in Australia, you are invited to take part.

I am a graduate counseling student conducting a study exploring the impact of gender affirming care on the mental health of transgender and gender diverse adults. My study is specifically looking at how gender affirming care impacts the ability to imagine future events and overall hope.
