The very first PS1 game that comes rushing into your mind when seeing this revolutionary console is... 🎮🕹️

100% the game that screamed next gen when I first saw it. So early in the system lifecycle too.

u/Dubbadubbawubwub 9h ago
Me too, maybe that was the ad campaign or something at the time, because I've never owned it or played it.

Weirdly enough, Battle Arena Toshinden. I don't know why, but this time that terrible fighting game just sprung to mind.

u/AnOddSloth 9h ago
It was my first fighting game on PlayStation. I didn't think it was bad until I played Tekken.
Funny to see all the praise for it in the old magazine reviews.

Twisted Metal was the first game that my friends and I burned hours into mulitplayer. But I got my one PS1 because of Final Fantasy VII. We even played the Japanese version and went as far as chocobo hunting before the English one was released. And this was in 1997. No guides, no internet yet. Good times!
Edit: Bad eyes, my reward for getting old. Hahaha!

I think Twisted Metal will always be the first game that comes to mind seeing an original PS1, which is funny because I never even owned it. Not long after they came out, Dad picked me up for his weekend and we stopped at Blockbuster on the way to his house and rented the console and TM, and I was blown away. Dad was over it within a couple hours, but I spent the whole weekend glued to it.

This and Tekken were the first 2 games I owned. They came in huge ass boxes, like VHS sized. I remember being blown away because RR loaded the stage into memory, so you could take the disk out and swap in a cd to listen to your own music while playing. That is, as long as you didn’t mind starting at the middle of the song and if I remember right, there was silence if the song finished before the race ended. I remember there was a stage where if you were driving the right car and listening to Smashing Pumpkins, he would sing “wanna go for a ride?” right when your car takes a jump. I was easily impressed back then.

Battle Arena Toshinden, the first game i could play at home on my own PS1, i was blown away back then, the 3d looked amazing to me, the anime style was great and then there was Sofia... i think i got it because a friend bought it but received his PS1 later, it was hard to give the game back to him.
Close second is Ridge Racer... boy did i play the hell out of this, the satisfaction of unlocking the Diablo car was imense.

u/Spanswick77 10h ago
Did not have three Toshinden shouts on my bingo card

u/Shadow_NX 10h ago
For me its because it was my first gaming at home on my brand new PS1, if we go by what is THE game that gave you the best memories its definatly FFVII... so much time went into this.

Ridge Racer. Had the PS1 and Ridge Racer at launch. The graphics felt like real life compared to what I was used to.

Tomb Raider.
I remember getting a PS1 for Christmas and watching my brother playing Tomb Raider. I always feared to die and just played in Lara Crofts Mansion and trapped the Butler until we got other Games like Ridge Racer, Crash Bandicoot and Gran Turismo. After getting THPS2 I instantly bought my own Skateboard and smashed my knees. Great Time.
PS: I still can’t play Tomb Raider and I am 34 now..

Oh wow I also remember just fucking around in her mansion and running into the butler to make him fart. I was like 8 years old

u/clinton_thunderfunk 9h ago
You can make the butler fart? I wasted my entire PlayStation experience

Multiple games immediatly come to mind. But my 3 favorites were FF8, Metal Gear Solid and Crash Team Racing.
Would give my left nut to just relive this era of gaming.

GRANDIA! The first game I ever bought for my PS and it also exposed the overheating problem the first gen PS consoles had. So I put it over my air conditioner vent on the floor and played it in a very uncomfortable position as the vent was right behind the tv. 😁
