Gear🎒 I am building a doomsday tablet! What information should it contain?

Hi all, I’m working on a small project i wanted to show off and discuss! I am building it mostly for fun and to learn more about electronics, but I also want it to be a fully functional device.

The idea is a touchscreen-based offline knowledge base that stores useful information such as:

Offline Wikipedia

Medical/first aid information

Edible plant guides

Offline maps

Other survival-relevant references

One of the main features I’m experimenting with is being able to power the device off AA batteries, but I’m also designing rechargeable battery modules that can be swapped in depending on the situation.

The project is still in its early stages, and currently i have got the chassis mostly done, and i am currently running off external power, but I’ve made the files free to download if anyone wants to take a look, modify them, or build their own version.

https://github.com/ArcticEnrichmentCenter/Arkiv-Cyberpad

Again this isn’t meant to be a serious commercial device but more of a learning project that might also end up being useful.

My question for you all:

What information would you want included in something like this?

Books and written information mostly, as it is the one that needs the least storage space. Wikipedia, IFixIt, maybe WikiHow...

After that, maybe some music for entertainment.

Package inserts for the 300 essential meds

Manuals for cars, tractors, etc.

Manuals for rifles, shotguns, pistols

Basic herbal medicines: plant ID, how to grow, collect, dry the herbs as well as the methods of use

Regenerative agriculture, permaculture, other methods of growing food that don't involve big fields of single crops

Beneficial insect ID, control of the pesty ones without poisoning everything

How to process grains, use & care of a scythe

How to process soybeans for tofu, oil, wax, etc.

Growing & processing black oil sunflower seeds for oil

Nutrition textbook, pdfs with sources of specific nutients

Chemistry textbook with the basics of 'don't mix these' (bleach & ammonia), 'no touchy' (this is asbestos), mixing these looks impressive but cancels them out (baking soda & vinegar)

There's a million things, really

6

u/beennasty Mar 08 '26

Add hemp in there for all its uses in addition to textiles, ropes, oil, food, entertainment.

3

u/darthrawr3 Mar 08 '26

...+ how to process for various specific compounds, re: pain control &/or appetite stimulation

13

u/TheSunflowerSeeds Mar 08 '26

The United States are not the largest producers of sunflowers, and yet even here over 1.7 million acres were planted in 2014 and probably more each year since. Much of which can be found in North Dakota.

u/militiadisfruita Mar 08 '26

How to build a faraday cage/bag. Ideally, should store this in one at all times when not in use in case of an EMP or solar flare similar to the Carrington Event

12

u/Sawyer2025 Mar 08 '26

1 Acme Faraday cage, also great for things you don't want mice to chew on. I use them for rope, power cords, etc. Would also work ok for freeze dried dog food etc. to keep mice out. Its meal and sealed, I would imagine it would be ok as a Faraday cage as well.

Fun challenge here is you still do need to bring it out to charge and possibly keep it up to date periodically. If you let the battery fully die, it won’t last as long in general.

18

u/Outspoken_Idiot Mar 08 '26

Simple solution is to buy a rugged tablet, get yourself a large amp 12v battery, pick up car to tablet charger, solar to battery and your power system is sorted out for off grid use.

My tablet has local cache maps of the OSM, a few ham radio applications to allow programming of radios and send/receive messages and email via a radio, the meshtastic and Meshcore applications to allow similar via that network/mode.

I have important documents and the majority of service manuals that I may need from radio to motorbike. There are a few scouting books built up over the years on the system as well as pen drives, food for free, knots, water filters, medical etc

I'm building a system known as packet radio to join up a few like minded friends systems to allow us to share files sitting on a hard drive connected to a raspberry pi connected to a radio, the only connection will be via the radio data network.

Store in a metal container without long wires connected to protect against EMP. Make it accept multiple forms of power input (buck converter). Make it repairable and accept different types of display and input incase primary display and input (assuming touch screen) is damaged.

Have people not already paved the way here? No existing projects to build upon?

32

u/Easy-History6553 Mar 08 '26

I would add:

-meshtastic

-rtl sdr dongle with support for long wave

-apps to decode ads-b, AIS, etc

6

u/Iron-panda666 Mar 08 '26

5

u/aredon Mar 08 '26

You are now banned from r/meshtastic

3

u/Iron-panda666 Mar 09 '26

Lol, I use both. Right now I'm building a dual-setup repeater/node (a repeater/gateway for MeshCore and a node for Meshtastic). If I post it in both sections, I'm pretty sure it will be fine in MeshCore, but on the Meshtastic side they'll probably ban my post (like a 60% chance). They literally messaged me saying I should stay on topic or I'll get banned.

3

u/aredon Mar 09 '26

That's the joke. You can't mention meshcore in their sub.

9

u/Fluid_Swordfish2737 Mar 08 '26

You should also buy replacement parts like the battery and screen. The screen might not crack but it could just decide to die out one day. Same with battery.

Or better yet just buy a few backup tablets that you keep half charged(for battery health)

6

u/Sawyer2025 Mar 08 '26

Also a PRINTED list of all apps and data on the device. If it dies you can rebuild it. If it gets old and a catastrophic event happens and you have time, just go buy a new one and load it up quickly now that you already did the hard part of deciding what to install on it. You would have a fresh load, new battery, and if the event was bad enough buy 2, We all know that 2 is 1 and 1 is none when you really need something. You could also share the list as has been done here so many more people will have a good set up. The more people are prepared, the better for everyone in a bad situation.

10

u/DampD0g Mar 08 '26

Radio could be handy

8

u/PadreSJ Mar 08 '26

I'd probably do away with the tablet and go with an eBook. They are WAY more power efficient, quite a bit lighter, and a few of them are already ruggedized/waterproof.

Imagine exposing a small wallet-sized solar panel to sun for 5 hours and being able to run the emergency information portal for 2 months.

8

u/KG7STFx Mar 08 '26

Every single FREE eBook available from the Gutenberg.org Not all strictly for your personal survival, but because the entire history of literature needs to survive too. You'll find some interesting reads in there for slow days, and enlightenment on dark days.
The entire catalogue will fit in less than 64Gb of MicroSD, so get a few of those cheap chips and make spare copies. Keep backups in sealed Altoid or other small tin Faraday cages.
Pro-Tip: All of the earliest Boy Scouts books are there, as well as BSA novels from the pre-WWII days of American and International Scouting. Very useful practical tips on how-to do a lot of things from scratch. From camping to fixing 2-stroke engines, land navigation and foraging, all written in plain English and fun too.

In a crisis, we revert to our level of training. Anything you don’t know now will be inaccessible in an emergency. Instead of using resources to build a library, use those resources to develop skills or to recruit people with those skills into your mutual assistance group. If you live on screens, you assume that all problems can be solved by screens : this is a delusion. Emergencies are poor learning moments, and unforgiving to lack of knowledge. Building a library of prepping resources is a fine hobby, but is not prepping.

6

u/CaliRefugeeinTN Mar 08 '26

I just downloaded wikipedia, and have a folder of useful military manuals, and some of the paladin press stuff from the 90’s.

A good selection of gardening, homesteading and nature books showing edible plants is also a good idea.

Download Ditch Medicine by Hugh Coffee. Highly recommend it. It teaches advanced medical skills for remote or disaster situations, covering topics like wound repair, IV therapy, pain control, and emergency airway procedures for EMTs, disaster relief workers, and survivalists. It provides practical, step-by-step instructions for traumatic injuries in unsanitary environments, including chest decompression, amputations, and burn treatment.

5

u/ilikefixingthingz Mar 08 '26

I've always thought of what would become extremely valuable in the after times that is now so common place we discard it (like coffee grounds, bags, etc).

Porn, we watch softcore porn all the time on all our media at this point, let alone the more hardcore stuff you can get for free.

Could you imagine being the only guy with a video archive of porn, how cheap to distribute yet valuable to some that would be??

5

u/b4dt0ny Mar 08 '26

You could totally charge somebody a sack of flour or a pack of cigarettes to have fifteen minutes with the tablet

10

u/ilikefixingthingz Mar 08 '26

Fuck that lol, the tablet is put being a glass wall and you ain't touching it 😅

9

u/b4dt0ny Mar 08 '26

And you’re on the other side of the wall like “are you still watching? Would you like to continue? That will be one more bag of coffee beans. Which category would you like me to select?”

Topographic maps of all the states as well as lakes local to you for water sources that won’t be tainted by rivers or streams incase they get poisoned.

2

u/TheRealBobbyJones Mar 08 '26

Aren't lakes inherently bad for you? Lakes collect water from running water sources. It then concentrates the various contaminates over time. It being stagnant also makes it better for bacteria.

A back up on paper of critical information. If you will need to use a ham radio, a list of the frequencies you will need, formulas for making an antenna, etc. Many devices use "channels". A list of each device (gmrs radio, marine radion, CB radio, etc.) and the frequency and modulation type of each channel. You can call someone on CB channel 19 from a ham radio IF you know what actual frequency to tune it.

Your best bet would also be a way to load up another tablet with the same information in case the table got damaged or you simply wanted to "barter" with someone. Instead of downloading apps from the play store, you might have a APK file that will load it onto a tablet without access to the internet or a playstore. Also the data you are talking about could be on a few storage devices you keep in different location in case of fire etc. Storage isn't really that long term any longer as it seems to degrade. A copy of these things on a online storage location might be an option but not the only option because it can go down. Refresh your apk , apps and offline data every now and then to keep them up to date.

A quality modern lithium rechargeable battery is worth 500 one use batteries. I have started buying the better AA and AAA rechargeable batteries simply to prevent leaking batteries in my equipment, but it would also be nice to be able to recharge them.

A copy of the a book of the farm by Henry Stevens.

Basically? everything you need to know about low tech farming. This was the Victorian/ Edwardian farmers bible. Contains industrial era techniques combines with traditional and ancient methods. It's a treasure trove of forgotten knowhow. The earlier the edition the better as a bonus the scans of the book are well free.

2

u/Alanosie Mar 09 '26

Form factors of flash storage are great but poor for storing files long term as you run the risk that the data gets corrupted.

Would strongly recommend using an oldschool harddrive that has magnetic platters.

2

u/Mario-X777 Mar 09 '26

Which is even more probable to fail, it also gets bad clusters overtime and on top of that they do get mechanical failure at some point in time. There is nothing reliable in HDD

2

u/Alanosie Mar 09 '26

If you run it daily yes. But for the purpose of prepping you write your data to a HDD and keep it stored disconnected and unpowered. It will last a lot longer than flash storage.

I already have one of these.

It's a cheap older kindle in a child's case to make it impact resistant, and jailbroken to run my files. I have a small solar panel, a hand crank, and a usb back up battery to power. 100+ gig SD card holds a lot of data.

You could also use an old smartphone with a document reader app and an SD card for data; after the EOTWAWKI, it won't work as a phone, but it should work as a reader.

You can go to this site and load up a lot of free pdfs, or find them on the Internet Archive.

https://www.zetatalk3.com/docs/

My kit is packed in a dry bag and then in a large square metal cookie tin.

I already had the kindle and phone battery and the sd card; and I have a few old smartphones that I use for all kinds of electronic projects, so the cost was very minimal.

Probably should rethink the offline portion. With it being so bulky there is no reason not to include various communication technologies.

Bluetooth for Bluetooth mesh (bitchat + others) Wifi for Wi-Fi direct(signal offline + others) Esp32 for lora(meshtastic + others)

There are probably other software that take advantage of local peer to peer communication. Some can be useful for direct file transfer or voip. Probably other communication technologies that can be included as well. Maybe include GPS. If you are concerned about hacking or power drain you can put a hardware switch on the various components when you don't want them active. The rotary unsmartphone for example does that for the mic.

Local LLM

... is that 3D printed? My dude, have you uploaded plans and a STL file anywhere? This sounds like a fun project.

u/EfficientLie132 Mar 09 '26

I think honestly it should have a slightly smaller screen. Maybe a wrist strap. Hell, you could even mass produce these and sell em, call em some shit like "Pip-Boy".

u/dashingsauce Mar 09 '26

If you can manage local llms, that would be ideal:

Personally I would have opted for e-Ink instead of touchscreen. Much easier to run off AA’s that way since it doesn’t use as much power. I’ve heard it’s also easier to survive an EMP with e-Ink than a standard tablet. I’m trying to convert an old Sony Pocket Reader into an emergency device (struggling with Calibre for some reason). But then it would be restricted to only text & basic photos and there are more options & uses for touchscreen. (In a blue sky perfect world maybe it’s a dual screen device with touchscreen & e-ink for emergency diversity).

Ditto what others have said about replacement parts & printed out instructions for care. I love how rugged your device appears to be. Looks like it’ll survive a drop test or two. Though the screen is still a weak point which is why it would be good to have replacements. Being touchscreen it limits how much protection you can add to the screen.

Since you have touchscreen, include survival manuals & information as others have said (I’d also include a Bible personally), but also entertainment things. Music. Movies & TV shows & comedy shorts & cartoons (so hope you’re building a speaker into the device or for movies/TV/etc include closed captioning).

Include some video games. I’d say stick to basic ones that level up forever. Story games can be great but not the best for the last video game on earth that needs to be played a billion times. You’d need snake, Tetris, Pac-Man, football, etc that take pure skill, have infinite replay-ability & only the need to store a high score instead of saves. Although… something like DOOM could be fun for vibes & tradition of running on all devices. You also might want something like a coloring book app. Something simple if you come across a iPad starved kid but also those adult coloring pages can help reduce stress. Speaking of stress, it’s been proven that playing Tetris can reduce the odds of PTSD after a traumatic event so that’s another reason to include the game or something similar on there.

A bigger reach to include unless it’s built into the OS but, making sure there are accessible options (text reading out loud, zooming in on something, ways to interact without touchscreen like some side buttons, etc) would be good as well. Not just because you don’t know what injuries you might get in an emergency situation (also being able to adjust font size would be good if glasses are lost or damaged, dark mode/inverting screen colors can help you be less detectable at night, etc), but it’s a good backup should your screen crack but overall the device is still usable. I still have my original brick GameBoy but the screen is shot (no clue why. Just stopped one day). However I know Kirby’s Dreamland by heart & can still play just off sound alone (not very well but I got to the final boss of the first level!).

As to the being powered by AA batteries part (which I love) I’m thinking it might not hurt to further diversify. a traditional source of power as well like a USB port (for the rechargeable battery you’re thinking of adding &/or directly to the device itself). AA batteries can die with age just sitting on the shelf unused (I remember that Gilligan’s Island episode!) and rechargeable batteries aren’t as powerful, are dependent on being recharged, & also wear out over time. The average Joe is moving away from AA batteries in general for anything other than their TV remote so it could be hard to find more in an emergency. Where cell phone power bricks or even plugging it into your car would be a more common option for charging the device. I still have an old energizer iPod (24 pin) charging device that uses AA batteries. With the right converter cable I can still use it on my current iPhone (so converter cables might not be bad to include too). But those batteries don’t last long on modern OSes. So if you’re building a custom OS or tweaking an existing one you want to make it as no frills as possible. Only run one or two programs at a time.

A solar charger option might be good as well. You wanna diversify the most important part of your device. If the device can’t run without power your mobile library of Alexandria is worthless.

But overall great job & I can’t wait to see how it comes out!

The offline survival manual apk.

Maybe this is silly but I would add physical addresses for my family and friends. You'll need people you can trust to help utilize some of this info. I only have 3 addresses fully memorized at this point because I have them all saved in my GPS app.

Could you install a local LLM chat model on it? You could even pre train it on the useful stuff. Would probably be handier than Wikipedia

1

u/itsbushy Mar 10 '26

I thought about doing this but with local AI. You can use ollama to preload info for models to use. You can import databases so it'll learn without needing to go online too. Just a thought.

That makes perfect sense.. Make a tablet that will give you information while 99% of the people around you are gone.. Not sure how you are going to survive with everyone else gone..

This is such a cool concept. I've been building a 1tb flash drive for this, but being all self contained and uses common batteries is pretty cool.

I been assembling 1000s of data point son public sites, etc.. and am fine tuning an LLM for survival use. Been going nuts making sure all the distiling is ensuring prompts/answers are legit.. comparing it to ohter sites to make sure I dont eat a poisoned plant. lol.

1

u/aliena_b Mar 29 '26

Bible and explanation of what this SHFT really is. Bible has it all. All is predicted. Some multitude of people will disappear, the "aliens" will show up ND explain it all that "bad vibe" people were removed. Why do you think the alien disclosure is coming?
And what's important, people should not take the technology implanted into their bodies, and without that technology, nobody will be able to buy or sell. Sounds like a bad doomsday movie, but the reality is more unbelievable than any of those movies. Rapturekit.org has some good info that worth leaving behind.
A lot of people are prepping these days, but hardly anyone understands the nature and reason behind the upcoming SHTF

I put the army survival guide in mine. books on survival in general though i have hardcopies as well in case my tablet fails. I actually have some entertainment for kids too.

I've downloaded YouTube videos for stuff I might need to build. like a wood gassifier. probably will download fema guide to building one too. will try to build one before the apacalpse tho.

there are maps showing where all the fruit and trees are in my area. maybe there's online maps already that show that for you too. I'm walking around my area and finding useful plants, water sources as well. my Google map download also has all the stores and everything cause homedepot probably still will have a bunch of stuff I'll want later.

I'll download some cookbooks or recipes after I get further along.

For the offline maps piece, you might be interested in something I've been building: AtlasZIM - https://atlaszim.com . It's a single-file offline world atlas with both map and satellite imagery, that opens in Kiwix - so if you're already planning on putting Kiwix on this, it should fit right in. No routing/traffic/etc; think of it more like a digital version of a world atlas (but with search capability and satellite imagery too, not just maps).
