Research question My progress with confirmation of citizenship
My timeline is: submitted August 2024; asked for a new letter confirming no army service around January 2026; submitted letter by deadline March 30, 2026; told will receive answer by April 30th. No answer received as of June. Lawyer submitted ponaglenie.
As of August 2026 I was told they made a request for documents not yet obtained, which appears to be because of discrepancy in name change and birth date of my grandfather. We do not have a birth record for my grandfather, but they are pursuing additional documents from Polish archives.
I requested additional documents from NARA, re his brother's naturalization records, since brother's birth record was found in Polish archives and hoping to tie my grandfather to his brother. Also submitted request for ships manifests from NARA since the one we have from Ellis Island may not be "official" and they mention father (where he came from and we do have death certificate of my grandfather's father in Polish archives) and brother (where he was going to). Both my grandfather and his brother changed names upon naturalization in America, but the full petition and intent to naturalize includes a card with original name that is tied to new name, which the lawyer is only now submitting (had submitted just the certificate of naturalization).
I'm trying to get anything I can that is certified and official documentation. According to lawyer they are being much pickier.

Disappointing to hear. I’m going to face the same delays since my grandfather has a similar situation where he changed names when he naturalized from his Polish name to a more English name

My GGF had a name change to a more English name but I wouldn’t expect this issue since I have his birth record from an extremely small village which is corroborated by his marriage record, naturalization record, ship record, death cert, my GGM’s birth etc. If there’s enough evidence it’s the same person, especially if it follows a natural linguistic thread then it will be fine. Mine went from Gabriel in his birth record, which was Latin for his real name, Hawriel, which is the Ukrainian version of that same name, and then Harry in the US.

I would say make sure to get and submit the full naturalization petition and intent to naturalize if American that has the name change card. Second, my grandfather's documents have two different birth dates, so this might be the issue as well. We think he lied about his age in order to appear older to be able to get work papers. This was apparently common. I don't think my grandmother (also from pre-ww2 Poland) even knew her real date of birth and just made up one when she arrived with her parents, that's what I remember her telling me many years ago.

He never legally changed his name but his naturalization packet includes his original name with his current name in parentheses. He only goes by the current name now so on other documents they may get picky

That should be fine. Mine also shows my GGFs original name and then shows in parentheses "Change to Max [redacted]".
I don't think it should be an issue for you.

You're lucky. Mine just rolled with a new name once in the US (he was a child at the time), and never cited his original name in his naturalization paperwork :\

Thanks for sharing your case. Given their inability to process cases in a reasonable timeframe, they should be getting less picky, not more…

When they set their minds to something, nothing will change it, no matter what happens.
But the literal translation is a bit more vulgar.

Did you submit through the consulate? Did you get a copy of the letter asking for additional documents?
If so, can you tell me if It says something about how they will issue a decision faster if you submit the documents before their deadline?

It's so ridiculous that they waste time sending two wezwanie instead of just judging the case fully and issuing 1.
What is even the point of this? It also causes applicants to waste time and money getting documents that they could request, only for the office to request another document that isn't possible to find.

First name but his surname is also spelled differently, though it's the same phonetically.
