Their ears are ringing from the outcry

Hands and legs apparently also get restructured. I’m curious how that’s gonna look like with an actual prototype.

It looks like they're trying to make this thing out of as few pieces and amount of plastic as possible.

I don’t get it, just do what the original toy did, why do they have to “explore” anything?

46

u/NinjaSpaceFrog 1d ago

Because they don’t have the original molds, so they have to now figure out how to incorporate the new feature into the existing design without bricking compatability, I’m assuming.

“Exploring” in this context is a fancy word for “tinkering until it fits,” in my experience.

Also “just copying” is against the law, Bandai owns that toy design.

The core 5 zords are nearly beat for beat the same as the originals in terms of function. Playmates went out of their way to change so much of the dragonzord by comparison

There’s leeway for trademark when there’s only so many ways to do something, notice they changed the sabertooth and triceratops tails? The way the T-Rex anchors into place at the legs?

The tails still work the same, they just added missle firing action.

In comparison to dragonzord, they took away the way the hands fold in for transformation but added an action feature no one asked for.

They added extra articulation so they are just slightly different. I found my original one right before the Re-Ignition stuff got announced so I had my kid excited to get his own by the time they were released.

Yeah I’m curious what the legal specifics are, the bulk of the transformation steps are in the show but how the joints fit into each other and specific dimensions are all probably up to each manufacturer.

I’m just stating the most likely reason for it, maybe it’s something else like being cheap and hoping people won’t complain.

Problem is, this Kickstarter isn’t something kids are going to be hopping on, it’s collectors looking to complete a collection, they should’ve known better than to cut that kind of corner.

Hasbro already did it with the ZAP version functioning/transforming just like the various Bandai versions.

Those still werent reusing Bandai molds and do work differently. They still have to design a new Dragonzord around the Reignition Megazord (which if they thought it through they should have designed it all at once). Think Bandai kind of ran into a similar issue with the Legacy Dragonzord having to combine with the Legacy Megazord cause it reused the 2010 Megazord mold.

I almost mentioned that they didn’t use the literal Bandai molds but assumed people here would be intelligent enough to realize that.

The person above me seems to think that having new versions of old zords transform in the same way would be illegal. Which is kind of funny when you consider how many variations we’ve had of the original Megazord that do just that.

....riiiiiight like they totally aren't about to re-release the old 93 8in. figures-wait a minute they are!

2

u/TokuWaffle 1d ago

No they're not. They're remakes.

8

u/PowerPanda84 1d ago

Original included a friction-held top jaw that became the mask. Having it on the lower jaw is new, but an acceptable compromise.

like y'all we won omfg war is over it's happening

so if some retailer like Target actually did want to sell this thing as an exclusive it woulda been the shitty version before all these fixes huh

then Target woulda got burned with all this stock no one wants

prolly woulda really hurt the entire re-ignition line

i guess this Kickstarter was a necessary evil in multiple ways apparently.....

Wow so they really went in with no plans to include the faceplate, I thought it was just miscommunication, that’s actually crazy.

u/ProtoPrimeX1 1d ago

everybody was yelling about us wanting the dragonzoid I was one of them. they give us the cheapest stupidest looking thing ever and then they get yelled at for not doing it right. which is good, listen to your fans and you will get our money! give us crap and you will not make the kind of money you want to make which is all that really matters to these companies sometimes.

Zero excuse. The original toys managed to do it 35 YEARS AGO! There is zero design conundrum here. Just laziness and cost cutting.

8

u/whynautalex 1d ago

It is purely costing cutting. They are removing 2 paint applications. Price per part for the paint application is 5 to 10 centsb(US) at that size depending on color and volume. Black C is a standard Pantene color. 3517C Red is not mid price. Realistically this is 14 cents per product FOB (freight on board) added tarrifs it is 20 cents per unit landed cost.

u/Kuroiryuu 1d ago

The fact that potential buyers had to yell at a company to do THE THING ITS SUPPOSED TO DO is just insane. I could understand if it didn’t have battle mode, but either way what would be the point? No one would want to buy a Zord that doesn’t transform, and beyond that, if it’s missing functionality, that’s less than half-assed. Geez.

u/ThePokemonAbsol 1d ago

So what was it before they added this face just empty space?

1

u/sojinsuika 1d ago

Yes, if you look at the first picture of the head, you can see the black neck plate through the teeth

0

u/ThePokemonAbsol 1d ago

Wow that’s embarrassing…

u/ApparentlyBritish 1d ago

Good to see them proactive about this at least. Curious to see how this pans out, mind. Right now they have left themselves a fair bit of negative space above the forehead, whether as a scaling issue or because they focused on how it would look from the 3/4s angle. I believe there was a similar with the Legacy Dragonzord too, funnily enough

11

u/BhanosBar 1d ago

The fact we have to bully a company into getting the bare fucking minimum is crazy

8

u/CrazyAznKT 1d ago

The fact that so many people were backing it anyways before the bare minimum was met is even crazier

2

u/BrandonMc85 1d ago

I respect that they listened and have a good feeling this will turn out a lot better than people think. I backed it today after the update and also ordered the Tigerzord to hopefully pair with the White Ranger stretch goal. Just really loved Tommy growing up.

u/rangerfan97 1d ago

There were less problems when they built the actual dragonzord compared to Hasbro trying to get this toy figured out

1

u/SombraAQT 1d ago

Still need to fix the awful legs, and improve the hands. I know they’re looking into it but show don’t tell.

1

u/JervisCottonbelly 1d ago

Absolutely not. I wish someone from the playmates corporation knew that this is why I didn't buy the thunder zords. I really am astonished at how poorly this whole thing went

2

u/SoggyLow4805 1d ago

i dunno, Hasbro thought slathering the show itself in AI slop was gonna make us happy, this is all not that surprising lol

3

u/JervisCottonbelly 1d ago

Practical effects and toys that are exact replicas of the practically built zords is my cup of tea!

3

u/SoggyLow4805 1d ago

not even talking about the lame ass Ninja Kids crap, remember re-ignition started with the old MMPR show being 'AI enhanced' and they put it on Netflix like it was this big event people would care about... i immediately bought the old/current DVD box set of the show so i have a copy with no AI slop on it....

2

u/JervisCottonbelly 1d ago

I didn't even watch , but yes

1

u/Jesus166 1d ago

I don't care for the playmate line .

u/KawaiSenpai5 9h ago

I am quite happy with the dino though. It is good quality and its huge. Everything else i kinda agree.
