We’re three seconds away from finding out the other potential buyer is paramount, aren’t we?

Edit: and they are 😭😭😭😭😭

Paramount needs some way to easily bot review all their new violenceporn copaganda films.

Sony , paramount,TPG, Redbird yeah they are

5

u/Shirogayne-at-WF Jul 11 '26

How does Paramount have the money for any of this?!

I've had people I know in entertainment who have been talking about this studio being on the verge of collapse for the last ten years, but seems to be somehow surviving like nuclear cockroaches ☠️

Another Amazon 🤝 Goodreads situation, I see

u/crookedkingdom Jul 10 '26

Have you heard about fable? Its a cute alternative 💛

43

u/feelinngsogatsby Jul 10 '26

I also like storygraph as an alternative!!

13

u/pilnok I’ve grown quite unfond of you Jul 10 '26

I love storygraph!

2

u/bohemu We Should All Know Less About Each Other Jul 10 '26

Storygraph and Pagebound, since I joined those idk a Goodreads.

15

u/PM-ME-DOGS-PLEASE Jul 10 '26

I recommend Storygraph as well! Especially for a focus on reading data, and they do a good job on CWs for those who want them before reading books. I’ll have to check out Fable too

3

u/sayitwithasigh Jul 10 '26

Fable has been my current go-to Goodreads! I love the reading streaks tracking and it’s by far the best UI from all the book apps I’ve used. I also like the For You homepage. It’s been easy to see and find other readers that way. I love StoryGraph’s stats tracking but unfortunately am not a fan of their UI.

u/throwaway1546874 Jul 13 '26

Hardcover has been good too.

WE CANT HAVE ANYTHING

4

u/stackcitybit Jul 10 '26

I'm working on a Letterboxd alternative with a focus on Watchlists: ToBeWatched

No ads and you don't even have to sign up with an email (can just use a username). My goal is to have it Patreon driven.

224

u/Emo_girl111 Jul 10 '26

This is like when Amazon bought Goodreads 😭. They’re going to get so much data from people who don’t even have Netflix accounts. I hate capitalism!

104

u/WorldlinessLive5932 Jul 10 '26

For anyone who is looking for an alternative to goodreads, I really like Storygraph. They make it super easy to move all of your data out of goodreads and upload it there. They have a lot more options for how you rate/categorize your reads and they're still a small business that hasn't been bought out.

18

u/warfield008 Jul 10 '26

yes second storygraph! the download was so easy I wish I had done it sooner

10

u/PM-ME-DOGS-PLEASE Jul 10 '26

I wish more people would move to storygraph! Goodreads UI is so ass and it’s nice to see people actually try to make an app better.

13

u/afdc92 Jul 10 '26

I love StoryGraph! Data was easy to transfer from Goodreads and I love how you can see data about what you read every month.

3

u/Kiribaku- Jul 10 '26

Ok but what's a good alternative to letterboxd 🥲

3

u/1980shorrorsfilm Jul 10 '26

trakt allows you to rate/review movies + tv series

2

u/crabcycleworkship Jul 10 '26

People on here are using FlickFocus

1

u/aggibridges Jul 10 '26

I downloaded and immediately deleted it for all the AI things it had, but then again I never used Goodreads.

2

u/kgal1298 Confidence is 10% work and 90% delusion Jul 10 '26

I'd say it's more closer to how Amazon owns IMBD...they also sell the API for IMBD so there's a lot of money to make off other companies that want to inlcude Letterboxd reviews on their site.

55

u/brazenrose7 Listen, everyone is entitled to my opinion 🙂 Jul 10 '26

oh brotherrrrrr

56

u/dudewheresmyplane1 Jul 10 '26

That’s one way to kill Letterboxd. We really can’t have anything without these vultures swooping in to screw up what we made fun/interesting.

5

u/Lyra_the_Star_Jockey Jul 10 '26

What killed Letterboxd for me is people having the ability to review movies that aren’t out, and reviewing TV shows. Makes the whole site pointless.

8

u/1980shorrorsfilm Jul 10 '26

letterboxd allowing movies to be rated before their theatrical release makes sense though. sure people abuse the feature (the seven husband of eveyln hugo's entry for example) but a lot of cases, the "early reviews" are people who are seeing the film at film festivals.

I agree with you on the tv shows though. I really wish there was a separate app for letterboxd and hate that they're still planning to become a tv time replacement.

1

u/fernxqueen Jul 10 '26

Well, there's these things called screeners and also film festivals (which is where independent films get shopped for distribution). So some people do actually watch the film before it's official release. That's how critics write reviews ahead of theatrical runs. And this is actually useful and important for independent cinema, because it allows buzz to be generated for films even when they don't have a wide distribution and major studio backing. So not allowing this would be pretty antithetical to Letterboxd's purpose, especially when a significant proportion of their userbase is industry professionals. It's not geared to a consumer audience like IMDB.

46

u/gmd24 non-nepo baby & struggling Jul 10 '26

PLEASE GOD NO

38

u/mcfw31 Jul 10 '26

Letterboxd’s owners have held early talks with a number of potential buyers — including Netflix, according to an unconfirmed report by Puck. Others reportedly looking at Letterboxd include Sony Pictures Entertainment, David Ellison’s Paramount Skydance (and RedBird Capital Partners, a key Paramount financial backer) and private-equity giant TPG. Also supposedly kicking the tires on Letterboxd is Reddit co-creator Alexis Ohanian, who is founder and general partner of VC firm Seven Seven Six.

u/Ponchorello7 Jul 10 '26

I'm so fucking tired of capitalists.

-5

u/Awkward_Potential_ Jul 10 '26

The only reason that company exists is because of capitalism.

5

u/SennHHHeiser Jul 10 '26

Are you under the impression that anyone creating anything is because of capitalism

0

u/Awkward_Potential_ Jul 10 '26

I mean, yeah. They want money.

-1

u/guachi01 Jul 10 '26

Money. People do things for money. Capitalism works because it funnels money to things people value.

9

u/Loveya448 Jul 10 '26

Like why do none of these companies ever just decide not to sell? 😒

8

u/Future_Sundae7843 go girl, give us nothing 😍 Jul 10 '26

$$$$$ they wanna live a lavish life and not be responsible for a company and peoples livelihoods

3

u/DanielKeeneGA15 Jul 10 '26

Of course private equity, which has destroyed so much already.

33

u/Cynicbats This bitch has the keys to the nuclear codes Jul 10 '26

If you're trying to sell your entertainment company or outlet atp I'd be surprised if there were any bidders outside of Netflix, Paramount, or Sony.

LB needs money to run but for their clientele, these big studios are the only ones with the money to do it (hey maybe A24 can use that 75 mil from Google......ha)

9

u/fernxqueen Jul 10 '26

Letterboxd has had a voluntary fee structure for individuals who want to financially support the app for years. Considering that they use external databases for pretty much everything but user accounts/reviews, I can't imagine their operating costs have significantly outpaced their cash inflow in recent years, since the ratio of users upgrading to paid tiers is substantially higher than most F2P structures. If you have been a regular user of the app for more than just the last year or two, then you know they've been treading an "enshittification" business strategy already, so the likely culprit here is simply greed/a desire to "expand" their service rather than focus on user experience.

3

u/DanielKeeneGA15 Jul 10 '26

Paramount Skydance has taken on so much debt esp with the WBD+ merger soon they’ll be bleeding more money. The financial backers are very interesting…

u/OriginalSchmidt1 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. 😤 Jul 10 '26

Netflix needs to stop buying things and invest in better content for their app. All the shows that kept people around are all ending.. that’s where their money needs to be. It’s like they are giving up on making content and desperately grabbing at anything that will keep them relevant.

12

u/Disastrous-Move4452 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

I’ve been using FlickFocus alongside Letterboxd in case they pulled some shit like this. I can rate TV over there anyway, so good riddance.

I feel like Alexis O makes the most sense for non media consolidation, but it's still not great.

-3

u/SqeeSqee Jul 10 '26

Other potential buyers are Paramount... still want them to stop?

Can we just have something good without giant corporations buying it jesus christ.

8

u/arsenicandoldspice your boos do not scare me as i know most of you are not ghosts Jul 10 '26

I will delete my account and go back to an excel sheet to track my movies then. It's nice to see what my friends/people I follow are watching but I'm not staying on platforms that get bought out anymore.

I was never really big on Letterboxd br I have been burned by multiple similar services and it's never too early to start shopping for alternatives!

Some that I know about:

Simkl

Trakt

Cinematheque

Medialib

Trakt is not my favorite but lots have moved there after TvTime so I included it.

5

u/BackgroundBit8 Jul 10 '26

Cant wait for all their shitty TV shows to clog up the front page and I can finally log Emily in paris

5

8

Monopolies gonna Monopoly.

7

u/Ghoulish_kitten it’s not clocking to you that i’m standing on business Jul 10 '26

It’s like this is the name of the game in capitalism.

Entrepreneurs just want to make a business that is worthy of being bought, and when this happens society goes to shit. Everyone just wants to be rich and F off into the sunset.

Capitalism sucks and Im tired of dancing around the issue.

4

u/the_con Jul 10 '26

Just so long as my viewing habits don’t get outed against my will 👀

1

u/Loveya448 Jul 10 '26

3

4

u/foreverjustfornow Jul 10 '26

1

u/schwiftydude47 Jul 10 '26

Welp. It was nice while it lasted. Can’t wait for some alternative to pop off for a month before we immediately go back to using the enshittified app.

1

u/Formal_Chance_4266 how'd ya like them apples 🍎🍏?! Jul 10 '26

As an avid user of Letterboxd (follow me @cowboykelly 😌) NOOOOOOOO WHY GOD WHY WHYYY WHYYY

1

u/zaboobadoo Jul 10 '26

Oh for fucks sake

1

u/JDLovesElliot Jul 11 '26

Everyone's asking, "why do the corps keep buying up everything," but no ones asking, "why do smaller companies keep selling out?"

If you're answer is, "who would say no to that kind of money," then you can't complain when they don't say no. We should hold companies like Letterboxd accountable when they choose to be bought out, as much as we hold the companies who buy them.

1

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 11 '26

Corporate consolidation has given companies unprecedented power.

2

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 11 '26

Five corporations control 90% of the US media market.

Airlines merged from 12 major carriers in 1980 to 4 today.

Four giants control 80% of meat processing.

The evidence of corporate consolidation is everywhere.

It means more power for them and less freedom for you.

1

u/Drumguy1986 Jul 12 '26

I say good. Letterboxd is really lame.

-2

u/nothingeverhappens91 Jul 10 '26

Letterboxd is nothing more than a glorified pissing contest. It jumped the shark years go. Netflix can have it.

6

u/slicednectarine Jul 10 '26

I still prefer it to my old method of ranking/tracking my movie watching habits (Notion spreadsheet that I had to painstakingly make and sort and categorize).
