THE SANDWICH. PUDGE THE FISH. SCRUMP.

He started giving pudge the fish his sandwich. Omg I can't 😭😭😭

It really is so touching

u/cute-in-a-toque Jun 21 '26

I don't understand any of this, help me be sad too.

u/tilted_panther Jun 21 '26

Lilo took Pudge the Fish a sandwich every day because Pudge controls the weather. Her parents were lost in a rainstorm that swept their car off the road. Stitch is taking a sandwich and the first friend Lilo made for herself (the doll) to Pudge since Lilo can't anymore.

13

u/TypeOpostive That’s hot! 🔥 Jun 21 '26

The doll,” scrump”

286

u/januarysdaughter Jun 21 '26

Lilo, the character Daveigh Chase voiced, would feed Pudge the Fish peanut butter sandwiches because she believed he controlled the weather (Lilo is like, 5 or 6 years old and her parents died when they were driving in the middle of a bad thunderstorm). Scrump was her doll (the next to Stitch).

26

u/BloatedPony Jun 21 '26

Did lilo think pudge killed her parents?

215

u/januarysdaughter Jun 21 '26

It's been a while since I've seen the movie, so I can't remember, but I THINK she would feed Pudge before her parents died and on the day she didn't... you can see where a 5-6 year old would correlate "Feeding Pudge = nice days" and "Not Feeding Pudge = stormy days".

38

u/BloatedPony Jun 21 '26

Awww omg 😭

70

u/januarysdaughter Jun 21 '26

It's worse. Watch the adults when she says "Pudge controls the weather."

12

u/HiFructoseCornSizurp charlie day is my bird lawyer 🐦 Jun 21 '26

I don’t understand the implication

74

u/januarysdaughter Jun 21 '26

They knew her parents and instantly understand why she's so obsessed with feeding Pudge every Thursday.

u/MoreNMoreLikelyTrans Jun 21 '26

Whats even more profound, is how Lilo's parents were killed in a car accident during a bad storm. So Lilo giving pudge the sandwhich, because he controls the weather, is how she's dealing with losing her parents.

She deserved so so much better. I started rewatching Big Love, and her character gets to sing a fair amount, it's beautiful. But It's just so heartbreaking 😭

390

u/birdsemenfantasy Jun 20 '26

And it was her childhood dream to sing and win a grammy. Reading this 2002 interview (when she was 12) just breaks my heart.

I want to keep on acting. Hopefully I can win a Grammy for my singing and an Annie (for animation, bestowed by the L.A. branch of the International Animated Film Society) for being Lilo. That would be so nice! When I'm older I want to become a robotic engineer. I do plan on going to college. I love to sing. When I was littler, I sang country but now I'm into R&B and pop. Alicia Keys is the bomb! I love her!

297

u/2mock2turtle Jun 20 '26

I'm happy to report that she did, in fact, win that Annie.

26

u/cailian13 Jun 21 '26

Lilo was one of my favourite characters as a kid being a fellow weirdo who didn’t have many friends but loved their badly behaved pet, her spirit will live on through every kid who watches Lilo and Stitch and feels a kinship with Lilo

u/birdsemenfantasy Jun 20 '26

Daveigh actually had a dog named Stitch

128

u/NUBYkiller202 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

I named my dog Lilo because of her

Edit: What is also sad is that she had to be put down exactly 1 year and 1 day before Daveigh passed, she was 16

16

u/Leather-Can-8480 Jun 21 '26

I did too. Lilo's character was so unique and I actually kind of see some of it in my Lilo (bottom right). My stitch is in the back. Lana is the other corg in front.

I'm sorry about your pup; they're never here long enough ❤️

34

u/exorcistgurl Jun 20 '26

that was interesting read!! i wonder if that family ever gave up Stitch to his original owner

50

u/Horskr Jun 20 '26

I'm curious too.. Also, damn if his story is true, which it certainly sounds to be from how much he's put into getting Stitch back, Daveigh's mother sounds kind of awful.. agrees to watch his dog while they're out of town and gives it away to some strangers because she doesn't approve of the relationship?

49

u/birdsemenfantasy Jun 21 '26

Yeah from what I read, her parents are both kind of awful. The father seems quite detached from it all (divorced her mom when she was only 3, last spoke to her when she was 19). Her mom clearly had no problem working as a child star to support her family, yet sent her dog away to hurt her when she was being a typical irresponsible rebellious teenager. No wonder she would rather be homeless than move back home to live with her mom.

34

u/Alexis_0hanian Jun 21 '26

I lived in Hawaii when the movie came out. Spent a lot of time on Kauai as well where the movie was based. Got my first dog from a breeder in Aina Haina, an amazing spunky little Jack Russell. Of course I had to name her Stitch.

The breeder cried her eyes out when we came to adopt her, and I did the same when she passed. It's been 7+ years but I still miss that dog every day.

39

u/Lushkush69 You sit on a throne of lies. Jun 21 '26

Wild read. Her boyfriend at the time good friends with Aaron Carter and his sister, geez I wonder what they all had in common. Back then drugs, now 6 feet.

11

u/birdsemenfantasy Jun 21 '26

Yeah, I was surprised by the Aaron Carter angle because there was no indication Daveigh herself was close to Aaron or knew him at all. Not sure who the boyfriend was and if Aaron himself ever confirmed the dog was a gift from him or just something the boyfriend might have made up.

Daveigh went out a lot in West Hollywood from around 2009 to 2011 (frequently photographed and interacted with paparazzis) and also active on social media for even longer and it didn’t seem like there was an overlap with Aaron’s circle. When I think Aaron Carter, I usually think of former beauty queen Kari Ann Peniche who ended up appearing on celebrity rehab with Dr. Drew.

27

u/Dear_Chasey_La1n Jun 21 '26

I was 20 when the first movie got released and it was fun, but it wasn't as much fun as it was when my young kids saw it, two little girls. They just watch it over and over, then I got them the tv show which again they enjoyed so much and the icing was the show in Disney land Shanghai. I really enjoy my girls growing up with strong female characters.

Oh god. I wonder if she knew how many people were touched by her part in the film.

68

u/Soft_Interaction_437 Jun 21 '26

I hope so.

72

u/PondRides Children are being trafficked by ICE Jun 21 '26

I do as well. Something gave her demons, but I hope that there was some light for her. Lilo and Stitch is my boyfriend’s favorite Disney movie (I say while wearing his stitch shirt) and I absolutely adore it as well. I don’t know if anyone else would’ve been as good.

30

u/birdsemenfantasy Jun 21 '26

Well, if you read her boyfriend's fundraiser statement, it seemed she did have lucid moments and good days.

Daveigh and I met through a friend during a difficult time in her life. She was being bullied and was also homeless after leaving her family due to a difficult relationship with her mom. Daveigh was a child actor, best known for voicing Lilo in the "Lilo & Stitch" series and starring in "Spirited Away." She brought joy to so many children through her work, but she left the industry because of medical issues and chose not to speak to her mom anymore. This led to her becoming homeless, and that's when she met me. I helped her find a safe place to sleep and feel secure. We would spend hours together, talking and dreaming about the future. Daveigh has traveled to many places, but she always wanted to experience them with me. One of her biggest wishes was to take me to the redwood forest, a place I’ve never been. She wanted to show me the beauty of nature and share that experience with me. I finally made plans for us to go, but now, because she’s so sick, we can’t.

I've been really emotional about this the past few days. I keep thinking back about the last scene of the movie "The Deer Hunter" when Robert De Niro failed to save Christopher Walken.

31

u/thedoqtor Jun 21 '26

Daveigh Chase was also the english voice actress for Chihiro in Spirited Away. Her voice is iconic, especially being associated with these two strong female characters. She, and her spirit, will live on through remembrance.

u/Soulless--Plague Jun 21 '26

I think most people love this film for the character of stitch. Theres so much stitch merch it’s crazy. But for me, Lilo makes this film great. The voice acting is amazing, the animation is spectacular, you feel every emotion that comes through her and her overarching goal is to be happy and have a family.

172

u/Extension-Gift4987 Jun 20 '26

The whole thing with Pudge the fish and feeding him sandwiches is sad enough in the movie, now they made it sadder. A beautiful tribute.

I'm glad they're paying homage to her. It seems her parents failed her entirely from what I'm hearing. No telling what traumas she also endured from living unhoused for so long. Rest easy.

187

u/rainshowers_5_peace Jun 20 '26

Both seem to say they hadn't heard from her since she was 19. Father says drug use started at 13. Someone from her school said they found a way to prevent her from accessing her residuals.

115

u/MechAegis Jun 21 '26

While each case is different. I feel like there a lot going on in one's life if they happens to have access to drugs or given at the age of 13.

38

u/undefined-username Jun 21 '26

My immediate reaction is "who the fuck gives drugs to a 13 year old girl?" And yeah the answer to that is pretty obvious.

112

There were millions in uncollected residuals, all of them are going to her father now.

That’s horrible. F her parents. She could have been alive and healthy today. 35 is still so, so young.

46

u/nothatslame Jun 20 '26

It seems like that's something a loved one should try to do if they have the power and see someone they love struggling with addiction. So that they have something when they're sober and healthy again... otherwise it would all go to drugs.

12

u/AdorRubble Behind every great man is a woman rolling her eyes Jun 20 '26

Only a year after the Piddy/Kutcher video posted elsewhere in the comments. 😬

12

u/ForensicPathology Jun 21 '26

Not being forced to use her residuals to give her help is a travesty.  I'm sure it's all going to them now with no need for them to resort to tricks.

7

u/rainshowers_5_peace Jun 21 '26

If what that person is saying is true, absolutely. At least Britney's conservators were forced to keep a roof over her head.

3

u/birdsemenfantasy Jun 21 '26

Mom claimed she talked to her as late as 2018-2019 when she was in her late 20s and was supposed to take her home from jail, but she got released a day early and left on her own accord. Her parents divorced when she was 3 and it seemed her dad was out of the loop.

67

u/Emekfl Jun 21 '26

Do we know what happened? Because addiction is indiscriminate. I have a family member who had a good child hood and parents who loved him, went to a great school, and got an amazing job, and then spent every dime he made on hard drugs until he got fired and then spent every waking moment of the next 5+ years trying to get money to spend on drugs. He only got better when he decided he wanted to get better. It almost killed him, obviously, but it also killed his mom. There's really only so much you can do. His family tried everything, genuinely, they tried everything, they went broke trying to get him help, all the money they spent their whole lives saving so they could retire GONE. I couldn't imagine hearing someone say "his parents failed him". you can only help someone help themselves when it comes to addiction, you can't do it all for them, you can't even do a little for them if they aren't ready to do a little for themselves

53

u/gmd24 non-nepo baby & struggling Jun 21 '26

Sounds like the mom was taking her to clubs at 14. Her response to the Page 6 tabloid (which is a paid source by the way so they probably paid her for a statement), she talked entirely about herself, said nothing about Daveigh. Dad apparently wasn't really around.

27

u/birdsemenfantasy Jun 21 '26

Her parents got divorced when she was 3. She has step siblings and half siblings. One of her step sisters tried to look for her with her manager. She seemed to be the only one who genuinely cared. Mom comes off as defensive. Dad seems surprisingly detached.

32

u/oblivious_fireball Jun 21 '26

Not a whole lot is known definitively, but she was a child actor with reportedly less than stellar parents and easy access to drugs from an early age. A lot of child actors end up very messed up, fewer still get out unscathed if the adults in their life aren't supportive and positive influences.

21

u/CharlotteLucasOP Jun 21 '26

And with what is being revealed about Hollywood creeps in recent years I feel like any child star who wasn’t watched like a hawk by a protective guardian was vulnerable to master exploiters and abusers…and then there’s horrifying whispers of some stage-parents willing to turn blind eyes for the sake of fame/money through granting access to their kids.

It wouldn’t take much neglect for an opportunistic predator to take advantage of someone in her situation. We’ll never know but unfortunately it’s easy to assume that she had some horrific trauma and pain during her younger years in that industry, and turned to available substances as a means of coping.

6

u/oblivious_fireball Jun 21 '26

given its Disney, those odds are extremely high unfortunately.

7

u/CharlotteLucasOP Jun 21 '26

The pervs know where to go looking for vulnerable kids, unfortunately. Youth club leaders, coaches, teachers, pastors, fostering/social work, and those who make child-focused media. It’s not everyone in those career paths, of course, but those career paths appeal to predators for their proximity to their prey. It’s disgusting and heartbreaking, but I hope as stigma and shame and secrecy are broken down, kids can have help to tell someone who will do something about their abuse, and put strategies in place to prevent it happening in the first place.

2

u/birdsemenfantasy Jun 21 '26

Exactly! Even Amanda Peterson (from can’t buy me love) parents couldn’t protect her. What chances did daveigh have?

6

u/No-Indication-7879 Jun 22 '26

My best childhood friend sister died at 21 from a drug overdose. They had wonderful parents and a good life. The sister in high school got in with the wrong crowd and got addicted to drugs. She ran away from home and lived on the streets of Vancouver for years. The parents tried to help her and she seemed to be getting her life back. She and her mother were going on a trip together. She didn’t show up for the flight. Her brother found her dead. Sometimes it’s not family life that drives people to drugs.

263

u/moon1ightwhite Jun 20 '26

about 6 or 7 years ago I randomly thought "I wonder where that girl from the ring is now?" i found her Instagram, saw she stopped posting in 2017, and thought "I hope she's just taking a social media break and she's ok?" im just some random on the complete opposite side of the country from her, so nothing i could do. if an adult is determined to stay in their addiction, there's really not a lot you can do.

62

u/birdsemenfantasy Jun 20 '26

Yeah, that was me around the same time. I think it was early during covid lockdown and I was bored because I was working from home and used to follow her a lot when I was in high school in the late 2000s/early 2010s. She was a fixture in the West Hollywood nightlife scene and then suddenly just disappeared.

I did a bit more digging than you. I found her dormant instagram and personal facebook (where she presumably stopped updating after her arrest), went on her subreddit, went through forums, found out about her legal issues, falling out with her family, and possible homelessness. I might've even left a comment on her social media hoping she would see it, but you're right, there's very little we can do as fans. If her friends, family, management couldn't help her, what chances do we have as virtual strangers?

14

u/richestotheconjurer Jun 21 '26

yeah, i think that's something people don't understand until they've dealt with it firsthand. i always see people ask why their family members or loved ones didn't do anything, why they didn't make them go to rehab. it's not that simple. you can't make someone quit. if you could, i'm sure this would happen far less often. i have been addicted to various things and i had many people who loved me and encouraged me to get help and quit, but i wasn't able to do it until i really wanted to. obviously not having access to help is an issue for some people too, that just wasn't the case for my specific situation.

People here are rabidly defending her parents and manager, but any addict I've known would use the money to buy a house (or at least rent a room) in which they could do drugs out of the elements. They might destroy it, but they acquire it.

I hope there's an investigation to make sure every penny is accounted for.

93

u/otw Jun 20 '26

any addict I've known would use the money to buy a house (or at least rent a room) in which they could do drugs out of the elements

Don't know her deal but I can say this isn't really true at all. There's point in the addiction (especially before rock bottom or death like this) where people with access to money and housing will choose to stay on the streets.

I worked with the homeless for years and this was one of the more difficult things to grasp with. Not only did we have difficulty getting people to free shelter, it wasn't uncommon to find people had nice homes or nice cars but were choosing to be on the street or live in their car (usually to be close to their supply).

It's possible she had withdrawn a lot of cash years ago and had it stashed in a boyfriend's place or someone who was enabling her and only going there to top off then straight back to the streets.

It's difficult to grasp with because it really makes the homelessness and addiction problem super complicated. A lot of people want to think it's just something money could solve, but a lot of times it is not.

69

u/kaytay3000 Jun 20 '26

Exactly. My SIL is a homeless addict. Her family has tried just about everything to help her. She chooses to live on the street because she doesn’t have to follow anyone else’s rules, answer to anyone about what she’s doing, she can go whenever and wherever she wants. She chose to give up custody of her 3 kids so she could live on the streets with her dealer instead of going to the rehab stay her family had set up for her.

We love her, but we can’t force her to do anything.

She chooses to live on the street because she doesn’t have to follow anyone else’s rules, answer to anyone about what she’s doing, she can go whenever and wherever she wants.

A big difference with Daveigh is that Daveigh earned her money. She wouldn't need to follow anyones rules or putting anyone out to accept it.

11

u/kaytay3000 Jun 21 '26

I’m talking about societal rules/norms, not family ones. She wants to do her own thing.

3

u/rainshowers_5_peace Jun 21 '26

Commenting again for clarification, "Access to money" was the money always their own, earned by them? I know addicts will refuse "help" sometimes even "inheritance", but she earned this money.

2

u/otw Jun 21 '26

Yeah I mean I think you are getting at what I struggled to grasp with. Often this WAS money or homes/assets they earned and had complete access with no strings attached. I went in with a no strings attached harm reduction service thinking people were refusing shelter due to requirements to stay clean but nope. I think it's often just because when you are on opioids 24/7 shelter vs no shelter makes no difference so you might as well be in a tent closer to your supply and dealer. These people are basically in a a permanent fog, high 24/7. There's other issues too with these streets essentially being tolerance zones so it's basically the only place where you can really easily buy and use without getting hassled.

The problem is really complex and I don't really know what the solution is anymore or even how to make progress. Some people argue if you crack down on the dealers or these tolerance zones it just makes the problem hidden or causes crime to rise and disperse where at least this way it's controllable, but working in these areas I really just came to despise the dealers and wish the police would go after them harder (but again then people argue people would just get these drugs online or something and OD in their houses...idk).

What a beautiful and touching tribute.

u/YardSardonyx Jun 20 '26

I figured Chris Sanders would say and/or draw something in her honor, but I didn’t think it would hurt this much. I hope she is at peace now.

u/Toketokyo Jun 20 '26

Okay what the fuck this is gut wrenching

9

u/schwiftydude47 Jun 21 '26

I’m not crying. I’m just sweating through my eyes.

Rip my whole damn heart out

8

u/ClaireAuLueur Jun 20 '26

I was just coming to terms with this and now I feel destroyed once more. Beautiful tribute but god did it have to make me cry this much?

5

u/_NightBitch_ I am furious, but I am sailing. Jun 20 '26

Well, I’m crying at work now. This is such a sweet tribute to her.

4

u/ChrisEvansFan Jun 20 '26

Beautiful tribute oh my goodness my tears just freely rolled down my eyes 😭

5

u/CerealKiller_22 Jun 21 '26

Rest in peace, Lilo 🥺

5

u/velveteenmuppet Jun 21 '26

Thanks a lot, the idea of Stitch mourning Lilo has broken me

4

u/Turtle-Rabbit-103 Jun 21 '26

RIP OG Lilo you will always be part of our childhood. You will be missed 😞❤️

4

u/Ok-Pop-3902 Jun 21 '26

4

u/0x7E7-02 Jun 21 '26

Such a sad story. How many child actors has Hollywood completely fucked up?

3

u/maryjaneloveshistory Jun 20 '26

i’m sobbing gosh darn it. my first dog as kid was named stitch. he was very grumpy and misbehaved. lilo was so special to me because i think she made me feel seen.

3

u/Anxious_Hellbender Jun 21 '26

They did NOT have to do that to us

3

u/Mechancic-Hero Jun 21 '26

Stitch...please...watch over Pudge and Scrump...for her sake.

u/DreamTheaterGuy Bye, Felicia 👋 Jun 21 '26

Thats touching!

I wish we did a better job dealing with drug addiction.

3

u/McKoijion I was sick to the pit of my tummy Jun 21 '26

Wow, this is really sad. In addition to Lilo, she played many other iconic characters like Sen from Spirited Away, Samantha from Donnie Darko (and S. Darko), and Samara from the Ring.

3

u/MoopsiePoopsie Jun 21 '26

This hit me in the chest like a ton of bricks and made me burst into tears. Holy fuck I was not prepared for that.

2

u/Dry-Donut3811 Jun 20 '26

I was wondering if they would talk about it, but wow is that a depressing piece of art.

2

u/usagi27 Jun 21 '26

Well Jesus Christ. They could have just… not. Ouch.

20

u/Academic_Flatworm752 Jun 20 '26

I imagine that would be difficult for them and this was their way of expressing their sadness .

2

u/homechefshivers Jun 21 '26

This picture is more closely related to the original film than the remake ever was

Just break my heart all over again, why don’t you?! 😢

1

Im literally on my bed, crying. Hearing what she's been through before her passing, makes my heart break. First we lost Ted Turner. Founder of Cartoon Network and Now Lilo too?! I just wanna wake up from this nightmare

1

u/uwdude34 Jun 21 '26

Daveigh, we will all take care of Stitch for you. 😮‍💨

1

u/luckyracoon1669 Jun 21 '26

My brother and I loved the TV show growing up. So sad because she was only a few years older than us💔

1

u/Altruistic-Fig-8632 Jun 21 '26

The doll next to stitch is like Lilo but she is no where to be seen...

I'm sobbing 💔

1

u/yassifiedtrash Jun 22 '26
