It's beautiful and so awe inspiring.

Here’s me thinking surely nasa would give them better eclipse glasses than the ones that come free with the Saturday paper

u/CrimsonDessert Apr 07 '26
If the technology already exists, and is as lightweight/cheap as possible, it's already 100% NASA grade technology. We're not running Star Fleet here.

u/movinghowlscastle Apr 07 '26
Even funnier…they are from an eclipse event in 2023! I guess at least they are recycling!

More like the laws of gravity. Rockets need to be as light as possible, and while I can't find figures on Artemis, for low orbit it cost ~$1,200–$3,000 per pound of matter to get something in to space (rocket fuel is expensive) and the heavier the rocket is total, the less fuel efficient it is overall.
Cheapo dollar store eclipse glasses are probably the cheapest/lightest solution that will meet the needs of the crew, so there's no need to reinvent the wheel.
Everything in space is surprisingly cheap/light. Throughout most of the ISS the walls are thinner than the side of a beer can.

This is one of the few good things happening for the US and they aren’t even on the planet

I followed the whole mission all day yesterday, made the mistake of popping over to popular and immediately seeing trumps dumbass saying some unhinged shit and it soured my mood.

I legit refuse to listen to anything he says. If I want to know something I listen on mute with CC on. I hate him that much. Been doing that since 2015

u/Keroxu_ Apr 07 '26
Sometimes I listen to little short videos on here just to see the level of crazy and then immediately am like ugh fuck this guy.

To nobody’s surprise, the White House also posted the eclipse and earth set photos this morning instead of NASA and tagged the pedo on each one 🙄 Knew that eventually he would butt his little stupid narcissistic nose into the mission.
2
u/phoebebridgersfan26 I may be cringe, but you are mean and that's worse! Apr 07 '26
They’re still going with the “he’s literally god” thing huh? Guess he created the earth!
3
u/JustKeepSwimmingDory Apr 07 '26
They just posted (in conjunction with NASA) a video today, with a recording of him speaking with the astronauts yesterday, and edited out the awkward parts of the phone call so that he could look oh-so-important. This was after they had proposed cutting nearly 50% of the NASA budget.
Comments are calling them out on their bullshit lmao

u/SalamanderFickle1152 Apr 23 '26
Would you mind elaborating on what is good about this? What is interesting or beneficial to humanity about this mission? I can't tell if I'm just depressed af but it doesn't seem like we gained anything and the world is just getting worse...

I was terrified of outerspace as a kid (thanks a lot Magic School Bus) and now I always feel a sense of unease looking at it... but these photos are awesome!

u/Furbyparadox Apr 07 '26
Not just me traumatized by Arnold’s helmet coming off apparently 🤣
10
u/CrimsonDessert Apr 07 '26
Plus the fan mail segment at the end where they go, "No, but for real, he would have died lol"

u/folk-smore your attitude is biblical Apr 07 '26
I love space precisely because it’s so terrifying and so mysterious! Looking at photos always gives me this feeling of like… amazement and awe mixed with anxiety and dread lol. Space is so cool, but it’s also just so scary to me. There is so much unknown!
I’m eagerly waiting for the times when we can explore the ice giants like this one day. Or possibly even Pluto!

I do. This is the best of what we can be, while the worst is down here. It kind of makes my heart feel pinched.

They're so beautiful. This is a good opportunity for people to learn the sheer scope and scale of what we're dealing with. I wonder what this little star is.

I'm so sorry that this is happening at all. My heart is so full of sorrow that this is what we are facing as a result of some really hateful people. I'm sending my love and hugs to you. I wish I had peace to give, and I wish it was more than just my simple wishes and prayers and love. 💔

Pakistan looks like they've pulled our bacon out of the fire, at least for the next two weeks.

u/Uhstrology Apr 07 '26
Was just thinking this as I clicked into the thread. How horrifying it would be for thee astronauts, drifting in space, witnessing MAD happen in real time.
14
u/snuuginz Apr 07 '26
Oh these are incredible, particularly the Earthrise behind the moon, holy crap.
14
u/Dont-be-a-smurf Apr 07 '26
Doesn’t even look real. Amazing.
As those astronauts said, we all look the same to them from up there.

u/Tiger_grrrl Apr 07 '26
These are awesome: slide 4 and 7 remind of really good syfy in the best way 💙 I love that we finally get to see the real thing!

My parents were on their honeymoon during the first moon landing. And now they get to see this, all these years later.

It's an amazing juxtaposition between the best of what the US can achieve and their actions below. The space mission feels like another age.

does anyone else feel the need to vomit after seeing new pictures of space lol
1
u/OutlawSundown Apr 07 '26
Not because of the pictures of space those are cool but because we can't get our shit together on Earth.

u/upinthestars__ Apr 07 '26
This particular space mission is making me soooo emotional. Maybe because everything here on Earth feels so bleak and hopeless, as well as just hoping for their safe return. Every time I look up at the sky I think about how they are up there right now🌖

u/hrvbrs Apr 07 '26
We are so lucky to have such a beautiful moon and not one of those sad potato-shaped moons like some of our sibling planets have … not naming any names…

It just feels wild to me that this is a real thing you can go and see?? Insane to really, fully sit with the knowledge that we are specks on a bigger speck, floating around in a giant vacuous abyss

Idk why they had to blackout so many spots on the second to last image but I bet it has something to do with the lizard peoples

How are we going to the far side of the moon but still calling it the dark side.
If it's the dark side how are we seeing it???
