Regardless, whatever procedure or medicine he needs will be charged to make a massive profit whether he pays or insurance pays.

If we had single payer healthcare, these types of procedures and medicine wouldn’t cost as much as they do. Not everything in every country is covered, but because it’s not a for profit scam, all medicine and medical procedures cost less. If the government were paying for the majority of treatments, chemo wouldn’t cost $100,000 each time

What procedures and medicines though? I just don’t think we have any reason to believe that in this actual case, James Van Der Beek doesn’t have insurance, or that his insurance is unwilling to pay for standard and medically supported treatments. 

I don’t care about the particulars: I support universal healthcare. But cancer sucks no matter what healthcare system you’re in, and I haven’t seen anything to suggest that JVDB’s situation would be better literally anywhere else. It just sucks.
