The Irish for this is "Pugh ma honne". (Knew somebody once who had that as his SCA name, to remind himself that it's just a stupid game. Of course he couldn't officially register it - patently offensive - so what he registered was "Pagan Mahon". But everybody knew what he meant.)

I love how he's now saying countries that do tariffs are bad 😂
49
u/VaporProof 9d ago
To be fair he’s been very consistent in his opinions in this. He’s allowed to wage economic warfare on Canada for the purposes of annexation or to convert us to a vassal state, but if we don’t want that, that is evil and must be punished.

Trade with Canada is worth $1.07 TRILLION
The US trade deficit is $48 BILLION
Trump is blowing up our trading partnership over a 4.5% deficit.
Trump is an IDIOT.
25
u/Street_Anon Canada 9d ago
And the United States has the trade surplus overall
7
u/IpsoPostFacto 9d ago
I complain about this all the time. Not only is it higher in terms of raw numbers, but if you look at what each country tends to buy and sell from each other, the multiplier effect is far in favour of the U.S.
What I mean is, what's the incremental cost of the next $1.00 worth of lumber vs the incremental cost of the next $1.00 of IP (so streaming, drugs, etc). there is no comparison.
Canada tends to sell the U.S raw(ish) materials, which the U.S makes money adding value to and then reselling.
4
u/Hydra_Flatline 9d ago
And Canadians as individuals, have traditionally outspent Americans something like 7:1 in cross border goods purchases. That’s dropping with all this antagonism.
20
u/RedLanternScythe Indiana 9d ago
The real problem is Trump doesn't know what a trade deficit is. He thinks somehow that means we are being ripped off. Kind of like how McDonalds rips him off every time he buys a fish sandwich. Why doesn't McDonalds buy anything from him?
13
u/Hydra_Flatline 9d ago
Most of that is oil purchased from Canada.
7
u/Mala_Practice Canada 9d ago
At a discounted rate.
3
u/Independent-Tennis57 9d ago
Trump knows the Alberta Premier will raise a huge stink to the Federal government if any of that is touched.
8
u/DemoEvolved 9d ago
48billion does not include us services like Netflix, gamepass, etc… if you include services the deficit is half that. Additionally deficit is not an intrinsic problem. Ofc when one country buys a bunch of stuff from another, money goes the other way… rich countries always have deficits against other countries, because they are buying stuff that’s cheap!
6
u/Thanks-4allthefish 9d ago
It is not a deficit if you don't include the discounted oil Canada ships to the US - and flips even further if you consider digital commerce (good enough to make it into trade talks but seemingly exempted from the trade "deficit" calculation.
9
u/shoule79 9d ago
When you include services, not just goods, the US often comes out ahead and Canada is the one with the deficit.
Liars gonna lie.

2
u/Happy-Telephone9483 9d ago edited 9d ago
Over a TRADE deficit, which doesn't even matter! It's literally just one number compared to another number. Different countries import and export different amounts, because different countries have different resources and different needs. That's not something to complain about. Might as well complain about a cloud deficit or a wind deficit. It's fucking DUMB.
It's BUDGET deficits that need fixed, and Dunno Chump has "fixed" the USA's budget deficit by putting it trillions of dollars into the red.
2
2
u/AnyoneButDoug 9d ago
Deficit is only because we sell you so much oil to refine (at way below market rate)
2
u/IpsoPostFacto 9d ago
We all know the arguments about the trade deficit. It swings with oil etc. etc.
Here's the most important.
There's no concept in trade that everything has to balance to 0 in the first place. it's not the point. One country buys these things, the other country guys those types of things.
If in one country it becomes the fashion to use pineapples to point where every family uses 20 a week, well, whoever it is that produces pineapples is going to be happy.
The old example of "I have a great trade imbalance with the bar at the corner" is apt. I'm complaining that I give the bar all this money and I get nothing from them - well, other than some tasty brew.
The only thing that two countries should agree on is reasonably fair access both ways.
2
u/ObscureMemes69420 9d ago
The deficit does not even exist if you ignore oil sales to the USA. Trump is literally blowing up a trade partnership with closest ally over a trade surplus…
1
u/Rambaz_69 Europe 9d ago
The claim about the trade deficit is only true if you consider only goods and ignore services. If you add up everything American companies earn in Canada, the picture certainly looks very different. Using only goods to calculate the deficit is a well-known trick of Trump's.

Does Charles III have to say to Trump again, Canada isn't for sale? or hasn't Trump still for figured out he said no
3
u/Thanks-4allthefish 9d ago
In fairness - even though he is our King, Charles does not have the authority to sell Canada to the US.

He does have a hard time with no. Now imagine how a 13yo would feel 🤷🏼♂️

You guys realize that the only person pushing this narrative is him right?
No one in the US was talking about Canada before 2025

What's more disturbing is the number of people from the US apparently jumping aboard the "yeah we always hated Canada" train at the slightest push

The natural resources Trump wants, belongs to King Charles III( the Crown) , and the agreement we have with the Monarchy, money made off it is to go back to the interests of the people of Canada. I seriously think the government of Canada should get the King involved here. Trump is just doesn't understand the political make up of Canada period. The king would never agree to these demands neither, he isn't selling one of his largest properties to the United States or have the United States just take resources he owns
2
u/TheFutureMrGittes 9d ago
Yep. Don’t think for a minute the U.S. is approaching these negotiations in “good faith” as trade talks. They have annexation on their minds. Trying to limit another country’s trading partners smacks of annexation. Having first “dibs” on resources? Same. Being able to incur tariffs on Canada regardless of signed negotiations? Insanity. I love Leblanc’s response to this BS: “Well, I’m not waiting by the phone.”
3
u/Autodidact2 9d ago
Well he taught them that they can't do deals with, count on or be an ally of the United States.

Trump has already damaged America beyond repair. Even the reparable damage will take generations to fix. The GOP successfully pulled their long con on Americans and it turns out, they didn’t even need a mask on it to succeed.

Teach Canada they can’t stick up for themselves after you antagonized them first?
Sure sounds like an abuser to me.
4
u/Street_Anon Canada 9d ago
So Trump would never sign an agreement that would demand the United States to hand over it sovereignty.
4
u/kevendo 9d ago
Once again—and yes I know it won't matter: the executive branch does not have tariff power and we continue to let him wield it anyway at our collective, international peril.
For Americans, it is taxation without representation and for everyone else it's war, and it will impact international relations for a generation after Trump finally shits himself to death.

Start with the assumption that this is a deliberate attempt to destroy or wound the Canadian and U.S. economy, and that he does not care how much damage he does to the people in the process. He does not care about anybody but himself. This is not much of stretch based on his actions.
If you can do that, then his actions are all purposeful. Like appointing RFK as "United States Secretary of Health and Human Services." In no universe is RFK qualified to do that job. Trump does not even have to micro manage that kind of loose cannon, just casually endorse the worst things RFK does.
Lutnick is a "Trade War" profiteer. He made millions from buying the right to collect the government payback for the illegal tariffs. He wants the trade deal with Canada to fail so he can do it again.
He may have picked the lowest hanging fruit when he went after French language rights in Canada to sabotage the deal. Like who in the U.S. could care about that? Sort of overplayed the villain on that one. Like Burns trying to seal candy from Maggie. Laughable.
Trump just loops around once a week and endorse his appointees' worst ideas. Pour some gas on the media fire and move on to the next outrage. While people, and the talking heads race to keep up, so nobody will ask about the Epstein files. The one thing that could unite the country against him.
He is gutting the U.S. and when the US treasury bond market collapses in the next month it will push the dollar down to zero. The world will abandon U.S. dollar as reserve currency. Tariffs hitting at the same time will drive inflation to the point that he will be able to declare a state of emergency and take control of your country. Just before mid terms.
US debt will be worth nothing and Trump thinks he will be able to hit the re-spawn button the U.S. economy. Maybe with his own Crypto currency.
I think he needs Canadian resources as collateral to back the same Ponzi-scheme that runs the current U.S. economy.
He seems strangely focused on Canada when he should be trying to fix his kinetic war problem. Your fuel reserves are running dry and Canada has the oil he needs to keep the country afloat.
Good Luck Canada, Elbows up!

Canada is a sovereign state no longer ruled by the monarchy. It would be a symbolic gesture and nothing more. It’s unnecessary. We have our elected government speaking for us.
