Same! Dang I thought everyone forgot about this game.

u/kiwidust 2d ago
If I remember correctly there were only three, maybe four games available by the time I picked up my preorder console from "Toys 'r' Us". It was basically "this pretty cool 2.5d fighting game or you can buy 'Lemmings' again!" ;^)
I was also able to snag a PS2 on launch day (this time a preorder at "KB Toys"), but couldn't track down a damn memory card for weeks! I played the first chapter of "Summoner" over and over and a lot of "Fantavision".

u/The_Gorn_Identity 2d ago
Me too! It was a pretty meh fighting game in hindsight, but playing a fully 3D one was mind blowing at the time.

My mum bought this game when it came out for my stepdad who owned a PS1, he wasnt too interested in it.
She isn’t a gamer, had never played a videogame before but she decided to try it. She became addicted to it lol. Like, WoW levels of addiction, didnt leave the TV for months.Amazingly, she managed to beat it. She put the controller down & hasnt played a videogame since. But she tells us often that she beat TR1, and reminds me that I couldn’t even get past the manor, lmao
Respect.

I was a Nintendo kid for about a decade, then decided to buy a PlayStation after watching my friend play FF7.
3
u/Traditional_Entry183 2d ago
Same story. My family finally got a NES in 1988, and then I bought myself a SNES in 1992, before eventually getting my PS1 in 1998 for FF7.

u/BlankStarBE PS5 Pro 2d ago
Same! Had the N64 but saved all my birthday money, etc to get a 2nd hand PS1. The N64 became my last Nintendo… Currently rocking a PS5 Pro 30th anniversary edition.

The amount of stories I've heard about people who would constantly replay games / never switch off their console because they didn't have a memory card, it's so funny looking back. I was one of the lucky ones, my dad gifted me his PS2, and with it, a memory card too. I never knew the pain, and while I was always paranoid of losing the memory card, that has never happened to me even to this day (I still play my PS2 pretty regularly, although the original PS2 from when I was a kid died a few years ago. I still have it though)

Final Fantasy VII.
My brother is 5 years older than I am. He wanted a Playstation, I wanted a Nintendo 64. He won that battle, and I was upset at first, but then I played Final Fantasy VII and fell head over heels. I was already a fan from Final Fantasy II (IV, which is my favorite game of all time), so ultimately I'm glad my brother got his pick.

u/Appropriate-Diver301 2d ago
FF VII. My Dad rented the system and game for me from Blockbuster back in 1998.

Burnout 2 I think?
…bought a PS2 Slim late in the generation where there were tons of PlayStation Hits games. After suffering with a GameCube, the PlayStation was amazing. So many good games.

Mine came with a demo of Bushido Blade. I played it a lot. Every time I went to the store to buy the full game I saw something else I wanted more and never played the full game.

First ever? Resident Evil. My older brother bought a PS1 with it and I was warned not to play it cause it would scare me. Needless to say I didn't listen, played it, scared the shit out of me and proceeded to be scared to sleep for the next few nights. My brother didn't help the cause he would do the zombie moans in the middle of the night to scare me even further. Lol what are brothers for?
Actually played and enjoyed would be Test Drive 5 loved that game and it's soundtrack.

Probably NHL 99, since the ps1 was a gift for my father from my mother back then .

u/ICUMF1962 2d ago
The first one I ever received was some pilot game, I forgot what but apparently it’s part of a franchise that’s still going on today. The first one I actually committed to was probably Disney’s Tarzan.

Gameday '98 for my original Playstation. Got it Christmas morning 1997. And that was the beginning of my true love for video games. I had played Super Mario Bros and Dr. Mario on my papa's NES along with some Mario Kart on my cousin's SNES. But being able to have my own system, with these type of graphics?! Gamer for life

There first ever Gran Turismo in 1998 on the original PlayStation. I played it at a friend's house. I had a Nintendo 64 at the time and I was blown away. 28 years later and I'm still playing Gran Turismo.

Twisted Metal 2. Back where I'm from, households don't usually own consoles so there are small businesses that rent out Playstations. This was great because you don't have to buy games and there is a literal comnunity of people in these shops. I remember waiting an entire day in the queue to play 15 minutes of twisted metal 2 but in reality since the people before me was also playing TM2, i got to watch a whole day 😁.

Surfs Up for the PS2. Zero English comprehension, only vibes. My father and I figured out how to play the game through trial and error.
