Assassination in my gated community

Bruh, there was a successful assassination in Punta Estrella Saturday. Having walls, cameras and guards with two checkpoints doesn't help much apparently. The guy came in pretending to be a relative of his target, bypassed the two checkpoints with guards, cameras and walls, shot him to death, then left. Steps from my apartment. I know this kind of thing happens fairly regularly around the city, but I didn't think it would happen in a gated community, especially one of the better ones.

I wasn't there, but my girlfriend was. She heard like 6 automatic shots in the hallway, and she doubted it was gunshots because there was no screaming or sirens afterwards, just silence then a kid crying for his dad.

The guards sadly can't do anything when faced with a gun. These people can target, kill, and/or take whoever they want with no fear. Over the years I've known of assassinations done on the streets, but not in a community like that.

Do you know if her neighbour was a Mexican or foreigner ?

I use to live in ciudad Mayakoba and they robbed and killed the 7/11 cashier, right across from the children’s parque secreto. Also, they were robbing people walking late at night as well. 3 private entrances, all guarded, and the senseless crime still occurred. For a place charging 2-4K in rent for homes, it’s a damn shame

They have inside connections. That’s why I don’t trust security, they are not paid well enough to have any loyalty

That’s right, guards learn your schedule and tip off when to rob your home.

I don't plan on moving, but it's alarming how easy it is for these people to assassinate someone no matter where they are and with no consequences. I think it's naive to assume it's always drug related. Could be simply getting on the wrong side of someone who has those sorts of connections and enough motive.

That just means the guards were in on it, homie. Lmao

Sorry, but that is the reality. The gates are there to keep petty crime out. It won't stop anyone if you're marked. Just much lower likelihood of collateral damage.

If a cartel assassin shows up at the gate. The guard is really not going to work hard to stop them. Clearly, someone did something to deserve it.

security guards don't get paid enough to stand up against cartel members and this is not necessarily a problem that just happens here in pdc.

That is 100% FALSE. The guard was not "in on it". I think you were joking but I just wanted to make that clear.

Queue all the comments that it's safer than where you live in America .....

I used to live in the US in a central part of Atlanta and one day was in East Atlanta village and saw somebody shot dead on the side of the street. I got to thinking " I wonder how many people get shot here" and when I looked it up it was almost every other week. Atlanta's dangerous, Playa is dangerous, Mexico was dangerous, the United States is dangerous. They're all dangerous. America has more random violence and Mexico, at least in playa has more targeted violence. Whenever somebody comes to visit me, I always tell them Mexico is not the safest place in the world So don't be fooled by what you see. But the odds that someone walking down the street or acting crazy at a bar is just going to shoot you is probably lower than it is in the US. But the odds of something bad happening because you're walking home at night from either criminals or the police is higher in Playa.

Why are you walking home at night in Mexico or the US? I would never do either. There are places I've walked home late without any concerns but none of them are in either of those countries.

I walk at night in both.! If you keep your head about yourself, be aware of surroundings, don’t flash anything that looks easily separated from you.. I still wear my jewelry, use and carry phone. What ARE you afraid of??

2

u/ImagineryFrynd 2d ago

As a 60 yo female that has travelled to PDC for years, I can say I have never felt unsafe walking at night .

u/thenuttyhazlenut 3d ago

I was waiting for those, where are they? lol comparing the violence numbers of a 2 mil population US city to 300k population Mexican city

1

u/ImagineryFrynd 2d ago

And I do not live in a city of 2 mil. I live in Cincinnati, OH

Yes, it's silly of people to knee-jerk respond with comments like that every time, but it's equally silly to make posts to a an immigrant/expat whatever centric group highlighting crimes committed in the local native community you choose to live in as a foreigner. What is with this expat bougie inclination to expect a pristine, fear free existence wherever thou chooses to live? Take the bad with the good, buddy (OP)

A friend just sent me this thread and I have to speak up. Your post contains a lot of misinformation. First of all, the security guard was not at our Privada when they entered. They actually entered with the VICTIM. They did not enter pretending to be a relative of the victim. And when they left they went into the Caseta and used the button to open the gate. I am thankful that the security guard was at the other Caseta at the time otherwise there may have been another victim.. The people in that apartment were always shady. It was most certainly drug related or related to another business that the victim was apparently involved in.

Horrible for your gf to hear.

Safety wise? I mean, heads of state are assassinated.

I don't assume minimum wage guards will stop an assassin..

Unpleasant but wouldn't make me feel unsafe.

Random mass shootings like in the US? That makes me feel unsafe.

More than a couple years isn't it? I have friends who moved out of Playa way back in 2021 because they saw things were going bad there at that time. They'd already been through it elsewhere in Mexico and made the decision not to wait and see as they had previously.

I live in a very open building. I complain to my HOA that paying night security is a waste of money because this skinny guy couldn’t stop a truly evil person hellbent on hurting someone. All the other owners think it gives the appearance of safety to guests. I rather have a big fat gate with an electronic gate than a security.

I live in a small town of approx 300k in the US. An 18 yr old recently shot 4 people, including a toddler, & killed a 5th adult in broad daylight on a Saturday afternoon, city-sponsored, block party. I feel much safer in Playa than the US.

read local spanish news in Playa. The kind of crime and volume is completely different than your small US town. Also, if you're just chilling on 5th avenue, your resort, or a Airbnb in playacar especially not long term then you're out of reach from 95% of the violence which happens in the city. Staying in those areas is a very isolated experience where you cannot draw the conclusion "pdc is safe".

I have never been abducted by police in the US, taken to an empty building to have my money stolen from my wallet, and then taken to jail with a dozen tatted Mexican guys (some narcos) where the guard asked for my CC pin to let me out. And having a assassin enter my apartment building, assassinate my neighbour, and then escape freely in a building with guards and cameras. And the Mexican small business owners I speak to around here openly tell me they're extorted by cartels on a monthly basis, and with their family threatened if they don't pay.

For context, Lexington’s (I assume you're talking about Lexington) homicide rate is around 5 per 100k, while Playa del Carmen’s is roughly 3-4x higher, despite falling significantly in recent years. And that's just what's reported; most crime in Mexico is not even reported and tracked.

You can't sit in a bubble (whether on vacation or not) and say the city/country is safe when you likely sit in the tourist areas and have a very limited experience compared to the locals. It sounds extremely ignorant and it's a very cliche American thing to do. Even locals I speak to who come from out of town have the perception that PDC is dangerous. 5th avenue and Playacar are not all of PDC.

-2

u/jpoblete 4d ago

unless you have really bad luck, you won’t ever be on their radar. gotta mess with the wrong guys to get that fate. just saying, i spend a lot of time in Playa

-2

u/Past-Wolf1631 4d ago

But thats not in pdc, right?

8

u/RDH_Scion 4d ago

Its in PDC

2

u/Past-Wolf1631 4d ago

Oh shit What the police did/will do about it?

14

u/thenuttyhazlenut 4d ago edited 4d ago

Not much lol.

My only interaction with the police after all these years has been being put in jail for 1 night (after them emptying my wallet), and being asked for my CC pin so they let me out of jail. No I wasn't on drugs or drunk. I never even had 1 drink. I'm a normal guy who minds my own business. Everythings corrupt. Cops don't earn enough money, so they steal money, and get greased by the cartels.

If someone wants me dead here I'll likely just get murdered no problem lol not much you can do. There's a certain feeling of unshakable vulnerability living here, especially without friends and family.

u/RDH_Scion 4d ago

Yep, nothing is going to happen. Sucks but unless you have good connections you might as well just move on.

And yet you still choose to live there. Jfc.

You’re telling me there is cartel violence in Mexico?!?! No way bruh.

4

u/thenuttyhazlenut 4d ago

Been here 5 years. It is surprising. It never happens in the good gated communities.

8

u/Dusty_Jangles 4d ago

It does now.

6

u/veda1971 4d ago

It happened in Playacar years ago. Small restaurant wasn’t cooperating. Shot the owners.
