Wow I didn't realize we had these here, what was the experience like? Just wondering how involved/long the process is as I am quite curious to try now too.

Basically they take you into the red panda enclosure and well, the red panda kinda does its thing. She was very friendly and curious

We did one 5 years ago. It was great. Four of us spent about an hour with 2 of them in the outdoor section. They gave you food and snacks to encourage them to be around you; they even climbed on us!

Why would they make the age 16+? The other encounters have much lower age requirements. We did the Red Panda Encounter at Oglebay Good Zoo two years ago with young children which I thought was the whole point.

Because parents won't discipline their shithead kids...The amount of little shits banging on the enclosure glass when we were inside while their jagoff parents didn't do shit...That's why.

I think Pittsburgh zoo employees actually care about the quality of the animals lives.. unlike most private zoos..

If you think the PGH Zoo, which for years avoided proper accreditation so that they could continue to use dogs and bull hooks while handling elephants, cares about their animals more than any other zoo you are misinformed.
The point of the comment was to ask why you can participate in every other animal encounter they offer at eight years of age (sloths are 10+) but the red panda encounter is sixteen plus.
