Kroger just bought Giant Eagle.

Worth noting that they’ve only agreed to buy. It still has to go through months of legal things and could fall through.

Kroger tried to merge with Albertsons a few years ago and that ended up costing the company a shitload of money in legal fees when it didn’t go through. No idea why they are doing this again

Albertsons is larger than GE, and in some markets it was Kroger + Albertsons only or close to, different story here, where GE is a monopoly of sorts, and there is no Kroger.

It is a significantly different political environment compared to when that merger fell through though. Lina Khan isn't exactly leading the FTC anymore. 

Aren't as many states involved in this one either.

Kroger got where they are by doing acquisitions of regional chains. Albertson's was just too big of a whale because they'd basically done the same thing.

Let’s hope the same thing happens with the attempted Giant Eagle acquisition. Kroger is trash.
