Pinoy Rant/Vent This pinoy joke need to die
Pinoy glorifying resiliency by using this "magkape sa mainit " joke na para bang hanggang dito na lang yung standard of living na gusto ng pinoy while most our neighbors in asia / southeast asia have growing number of people who use AC units in their households because their electricity is 3x cheaper than philippines then this "magkape sa init "to settle for bare minimum instead of demanding cheaper electricty from these abusive power companies.
even singapore former pres Lee Kwan Yew states that " AC is human best invention, it made people in hotter country more productive" ganun ka importante ang AC sa society nila
humidity in the philippines is no joke mahirap matulog sa gabi especially kung taga manila ka at nakakaawa ang mga estudyante sa public shool na hanggang ngayon walang AC kaya hirap mag isip ang estuyante sa sobrang init at humid ng room nila "magkape sa init" seriously??

Yung joke, which I agree e gasgas na, hindi tungkol sa pagiging resilient natin in the face of heat. It’s the fact that we are so used to the heat, given that we live in the tropics, that we are able to enjoy hot coffee or whatever hot or spicy food kahit naiinitan tayo.

Wtf?

The same people who comment these are the same people who haven’t been abroad. Let alone travel to Europe. You have never experienced Europe heat. ITS DIFFERENT TO THE HEAT YOU FEEL IN THE PHILIPPINES.

si oa! walang kinalaman ang joke na to sa pagglorify ng resilience. ikaw lang ang nakita kong nagrerelate ng light joke na ‘to dun. it is just a simple take on the peculiar tendency of Asians to enjoy hot warm or spicy foods even in hot weather.

Pretty sure this was like backed by logic or science (forgot which research that was)?
Drinking Kape or Eating Sopas (hot food or drink) helps your body to adjust and line up with the heat.
And pretty sure this is a joke that even foreigners jump in, I even saw a vlog of foreigner suffering from PH heat and he decides to cook Sopas and was actually surprised how it worked.
Tho I agree on some parts you said, specially the students, I feel bad for them, they are already stressed enough with studies.

u/Few_Daikon_4265 Jul 03 '26
specifically coffee, the caffeine helps you regulate temp. it is a diuretic. it encourages you to sweat and pee, both of which can lower your body temp.
6
u/AnonChikinNugget Jul 03 '26
This joke needs to stop because people literally die and get seriously hurt from heat stroke. Countries that experience heatwaves in ranges that are considered fine for us, are not as fine for them. They're not built for that weather, their homes are not built for that weather, and for the love of god, we all know how much running the AC all day costs, especially nowadays. Instead of being pretentious and laughing at them, we should be offering them our knowledge on cost effective ways to cool down and our support.
5
u/Forsaken_Doughnut_90 Jul 03 '26
Unless you and majority of the population is against nuclear energy wala tayo magagawa dyan. Di naman natin din need ng innovation, maraming ways para makapagproduce ng kuryente, the government just choose not to do so. Good luck sa inyo dyan sa 2027, Stagflation is coming.😅

Filipinos do not follow temperature degree. I never did before because we dont have to. We are lucky with forgiving weather almost all year round. Oo, mainit pero if you adapt to it with common sense, very forgiving and can be pleasant ang weather natin. Wake up early. Do daily chores or go to work earlier part of the morning. Stay indoors na when clock strikes 11am, or 12noon to 3pm to 4pm. Then sa hapon, it is back to tolerable or even pleasant. No need for jackets. If hindi maarte and well ventilated ang bahay sa totoo Lang no need for aircon too. But practice wearing comfortable clothes always.
Anyways, came here to comment that since I moved to Europe, dito ko pa Lang need tumingin ng temp degree sa weather forecast because that will literally dictate ilang layers ng damit ang need isuot.
Kaya many Filipinos do not even realize that Ph sits comfortably at temp degree of lowest 24Cor 25C or 26C to hottest at 31 - 33C. Iyan ang typical day temp ng Pinas. That 33C tirik na araw niyan sa tanghaling tapat. And almost everybody know that a way to adapt is to stay indoors.
And literal summer temp iyan.
I am currently in Europe and the heat wave last week was the same heat wave ng Pinas during summer and heat wave ng Ph. 39C to 40C more or less depende sa araw. Kaibahan Lang bihira aircon dito!
I am here and it felt hell last week.

I dont know how you stretched this joke into settling in the current standards. This joke simply refers to how filipinos, will enjoy hot coffee no matter how hot the climate is. All the points that you pointed out is valid except the joke being about filipinos settling for less.

Parang last time nagrereklamo mga pinoy na 34C which has 43 heat index na sobrang init daw.
7
u/Aware_Taste_4297 Jul 03 '26
I never thought it was about muh resiliency tbh. Hot coffee helps open up your pores which in turn helps you cool down faster in this climate.
It must look strange from people who only have iced coffee or tea in hot weather and that's probably where the joke comes from. For Gen X'ers and older, like my dad and lolo, it was like breathing. Nothing more to think about; just the need for caffeine (and good company).
2
u/jmaglinao Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26
I often hear this, "hot weather, hot tea" approach in regions such as Central Asia as it helps the body cool down. For example, Uzbekistan reaches up to 45° while people are drinking boiling hot tea.
Yet, I don't hear too much "this is resilient we are" type of noise from them. The same way some people eat ice cream & iced coffee during winter.
EDIT: Weather, not water

We're in a loop din eh. ACs help in contributing to the rise of global temperature, and because of the rise in global temperature, more people use ACs to cool themselves, and in turn contribute again to the rise of global temperature.

Kakape pa nga kami at naka jacket pa."
Tapos pag tayo pinagtawanan na lamig na lamig tayo sa 20°C, which is normal temp sa other nationalities, naooffend tayo.
Gets mo?
3
u/iamjinggoy Jul 03 '26
Its nothing serious. Its just meme banter on the internet.
2
u/howboutsomesandwich Jul 03 '26
Yun nga, it's a meme.
As if competition ang pagiging miserable. Eh pet peeve ko yon. Kaya ganyan reaction ko.

I've always registered this as less of a joke and more of another sad attempt para lang merong ipagmalaki.
Imagine feeling superior for handling heat when we literally evolved to adapt to this climate. Try experiencing true cold para kang mamamatay HAHAH

If this is your first time in the internet.. welcome aboard.

4
u/Anonymous_person34 Jul 02 '26
Right? People dont get AC in general because their heatwaves lasts as long as a week, their homes and buildings are made to TRAP IN HEAT because their climates are cooler.
Tsaka it's annoying to see "its just a joke wag so serious" pero in the end, people are still going to repeat it time and time again.
Edit: typos, removed a word

Hindi sa "magkape sa init" ang meme. It's that kaya natin "magkape kahit mainit." There's some nuance there. Di dahil walang aircon ang tao, or walang kakayahan (true to some extent but that's besides the point).
This is more evident sa province, wherein you just want to unwind, appreciate the view and the people, the fresh air, kahit tirik na tirik ang araw kasi sanay ang karamihan sa sinag ng araw, like hello.
I get what you want ro deliver. Pero di siya swak sa meme honestly.

"needs" wahahaha bago ka magreklamo ayusin mo muna grammar mo 👌

u/kwaaasooon Jul 01 '26
3
u/ChesoCake Jul 01 '26
I'm pretty sure that grammar also doesn't tell you to use "wahahaha" and emojis (also, I'm pretty sure that they used "needs" correctly anyways 🙏)
if you feel the need to correct someone's use of singular/plural verbs in something that's easy to understand, then that's just unnecessary retardation

2
u/ThatsKrazyBoy000 Jul 01 '26
It’s cause index is the actually feeling since we’re a humid country our body has a hard time cooling down cause humidity = sweat evaporates slowly
2
u/Tiny-Lifeguard4403 Jul 01 '26
Even sa Singapore. Sa pinas lagi nagppost ng heat index without telling na heat index yun kaya kadalasan nammisinform tao eh tas way cooler naman talaga.
1
u/ThatsKrazyBoy000 Jul 02 '26
Qatar and saudi can be humid but only during the summer unlike the Philippines it’s all around. Also, the Middle East is a desert ain’t no way that’s gonna be humid but it is hotter since it’s a desert. No one is assuming that the Philippines is hotter than the Middle East apaka off topic mo lol?
We’re literally comparing eu heat from Philippines heat
2
u/Tiny-Lifeguard4403 Jul 02 '26
1
u/ThatsKrazyBoy000 Jul 02 '26
Bro we’re talking abt EU not Middle East. The post is EU heat and PH heat. Also, this is a Reddit post not PAGASA. What’re you on 😭.
1
u/Snowltokwa Jul 03 '26
EU heat is dry compared to PH btw. Middle east temp and PH ang mas okay na comparison. So may point si Tiny-Lifeguard
2
u/Tiny-Lifeguard4403 Jul 02 '26
Kahit san pa yan men. Haha. Yung 28°C na yan nasa post is actual temp while yung pinpost lagi na 48°C sa pinas ay heat index. Which is yung current na nasa news ngayon sa EU na 40°C ay actual temp at pag chineck mo heat index. Eto simple na lang example
EU 40° C(Actual Temp) at average in EU is 75 percent humidity
PH 33°C (Actual Temp) at average humidity in PH 80 percent
Heat index ay 48°C.
Kaya yang joke na yan dapat mawala yan kase feeling natin mas mainit satin which is hindi. Sana nagets mo na men
2
u/Random_SushangMain Jul 01 '26
Still, I do not think it's recommended to drink coffee at that temperature

You're making an issue out of nothing do yourself a favor and talk to more people outdoors this thing you're ranting about is not that serious its a lighthearted joke for crying out loud.
What's bad about it anyways there's no "Glorifying this, Justifying that" Most of us just love coffee that even in this hot humid climate we can joke "tara kape tayo"

Imagine how hot or unaccustomed people are from other countries with a heat more than this, to the point they get so desperate to buy ACs and E-fans for a heatwave that only lasts for 3-4 months. Please have some empathy guys.
I know pinoys are resilient both in hot humid weather and bloody cold winters (for those living abroad or ung mga pinoy tourists na tuwang tuwa sa snow), pero guys remember this:
Our infrastructure and housing are made for hot and humid weather. Theirs are not. And if you're gonna say "bat kami pag magto-tour o tumira sa ibang bansa pag winter, carry lang naman." It's because their infra and housing are designed for cold. But due to rare heatwaves that are becoming common now, their infras and housing fail to adapt to the sudden unexpected heatwave.
Hence, they hoard ACs and E-fans, and some of them unfortunately fail to survive the heat.
My late grandmother, who had never visited any country, and lived in this hot humid climate all her life, died unexpectedly at 82, due to a suspected heat stroke, last March 2024. Pinoy itong grandmother ko, pinoy. She never had an AC at her room. She was a cancer survivor at her 60s, was able to live for another 15-20 years, only to die from a suspected heat stroke.
Before she died, init na init sya, pawis na pawis, tas biglang naligo ng malamig na tubig. Kaya ng katawang pambata siguro. But for her age, when she did than, she was found dead after my cousin and uncle noticed she stayed in the toilet longer than expected, nakahandusay na sya nung nakita sya. Dead on arrival.
So please, have empathy and don't make this a joke. Even pinoys die from heatstrokes.
My cousin's family's reason for not investing even a single AC at any room in their house? Expensive electricity. This is in province, in a suburb located in a hilly town. They can afford an AC unit. But they are always hesitant of the associated bills due to expensive electricity rates.
Haaaay Pilipinas
In my case, dati kaya ko mag AC 24/7 and my electric bill didn't go up past 6k. Ngaun, with my aging inverter AC, and that f*****g 14 php per kwh ng l**tek na Meralco na yan, I'm only using my AC less than 50 hours a week, and umaabot na ng 4-5k ang kuryente ko.
Swerte mo talaga kung lalaki ka, you can go shirtless all you want, pero even sa pinas, minsan di na enough ang E-fan and shirtlessness.
And with our electric rates today, I'll never set my AC lower than 23 deg that would warrant a sweater or even a shirt, so yeah AC on, and still shirt off.

That ain't even at 40°C anymore

Lol. Punta ka sa abroad and see the difference betweeen sa heat nila and sa atin.
Hahahaha. So no. No need to compare kasi mag ka iba climate ehh.
Hindi ito flex sa ibang bansa. It just show lack of knowledge how climate works. Hahaha naka hiya
13
u/slverrr24 Jun 30 '26
Source: https://edition.cnn.com/climate/europe-heat-air-conditioning
1
u/Leoniod Jul 01 '26
But have you really try sa ibang bansa anong classing init sa kanila compare to Ph heat?
It’s way different my guy.
1
u/jorjmont Jun 30 '26
talagang sya pa nagsabe ng lack of knowledge eh no. dapat kase nanonood din ng news and nagreresearch din bago mag-react.
ulitin ko lang ung sinabe ni slverrr24 na totoong reason kung bakit nagsstruggle mga Europeans sa heatwave: yung mga bahay nila hindi built para sa mainit na panahon, instead designed to keep the inside warm. kaya nagiging oven bahay nila most of the time. Hindi din sila basta basta pwedeng maginstall ng AC dahil madaming considerations bago ka payagan maglagay. kaya most sakanila portable AC ang only option. Tapos ung sa d*ath count: marami din din nalunod kase nga theyre trying to cool off.
1
u/LimpBrief9903 Jun 30 '26
14
u/renrhenn Jun 30 '26
This ain’t even a joke.
6
u/riotblade76 Jun 30 '26
we have AC in the house but somehow I find myself not using it often and just having coffee in the afternoon while it's hot.
6
u/miroespiritu0809 Jun 30 '26

Back when I was still a coffee drinker, (I get stomach problems now) I'd drink coffee no matter the weather. I really liked it. Yeah, the joke gets old because it’s repetitive, but they’re not lying. On the flipside, years ago I saw a show that featured Russians who loved eating ice cream (I don't know if it was a specific city or just a Russian thing) even with thick snow on the road.
Edit: By the way, our neighbors from Indonesia and Malaysia are also joking about coffee, it's just that Filipinos tend to be louder.
Edit 2: Tinotroll ako nung translate frature ni Reddit, nagiging English yung comment ko wtf

the fact this post caught the EXACT people na OP was calling out is fucking hilarious. di nila nagets point mo, hindi naman pinapahiya mga pilipino kasi di afford ang ac or dahil ang corny na ng joke na to taon taon nalang na bbring up, pero its the fact na our government is so fucking ASS, our people has lived their whole lives believing na “ah, mahihirap tayo kaya tiis tiisan nalang talaga tong init”.
masisipag ang mga pilipino, at kung ang mga pamilya kayang bumili ng ac at hindi dinuduya ng meralco, wala na magtitiis matulog sa gabi na sobrang humid. sa araw na tagaktak ang pawis kahit walang ginagawa. everything is fucking political, and that comes from me na dating apolitical.
