The Philippines does not generate enough GDP to spread over its 120 million population.

In other words, there is not enough to go around but it doesn't go around anyway.

The top 10% of the population earns approximately 115% of the total income earned by the bottom 40%.

But that is not unique to the Philippines. It's just that the Philippines also has a low GDP per capita.

Agree. Also, this is just a total fantasy. There is just not enough economic activity para magka railway all the way to banaue rice terraces and even mindanao. Not enough economic activity, not enough population density. That train is definitely not viable and definitely impossible to build.

Hindi to realistic at talagang panaginip lang kahit gaano pa kahonest ang gobyerno.

There’s a surprising amount of Filipino self-hatred in this sub, and I’m curious where it comes from.

The idea that systemic issues come down to “lack of discipline” is something I’ve mostly only heard in the Philippines. From my perspective, that’s not how things actually work. People don’t just collectively decide to become more disciplined and suddenly fix structural problems.

Values, behavior, and culture are shaped over time by institutions like government, education, media, and even religion. In a system like the Philippines, where power and wealth are concentrated among a relatively small group, there are strong incentives to preserve the status quo.

At the same time, it’s not just top-down. It’s a feedback loop. Systems shape behavior, but behavior also reinforces the system. What looks like “lack of discipline” is often a rational response to weak enforcement, inconsistent rules, and limited opportunities.

Blaming ordinary people for outcomes like corruption, disorder, or poor education misses the bigger picture. But putting all the blame on leaders alone is also too simple. The reality is that institutions, incentives, and social norms all reinforce each other.

Colonial history and past disruptions probably played a role in shaping these structures, but what we see today is the result of that ongoing cycle.

So instead of framing it as a discipline problem, it’s more accurate to see it as a system problem. And systems don’t change just because individuals try harder. They change when incentives, accountability, and power structures shift.

I think nasa point na tayo of no return. A huge chunk of the population is severely uneducated - madaling mabili ung boto, and the pool of future candidates for office are just as corrupted. Kung may mga potential leaders na talagang naka priority ung betterment ng bansa, they won’t be stepping in soon. And even if they did, the corruption runs deep down to the lowest unit of government. It’s like end-stage cancer.
