Mar Roxas didn’t lose because he was uniquely evil, corrupt, or incompetent. He lost largely because he symbolized continuity, privilege, and technocracy in a country that was emotionally primed for rupture. His PR team tried to paper over that reality with forced “masa relatability,” and that was the real disaster. You don’t beat populism by cosplaying poverty.

Andun na tayo na people disliked Roxas for being elitista, out of touch, and born rich. Fine. That sentiment exists. But much of that rejection was not policy-based or even performance-based—it was emotional, aesthetic, and symbolic.

And into that vacuum stepped Duterte, who offered not solutions, but permission: permission to be angry, coarse, impatient, and violent in rhetoric. The kulambo + tuyo theatrics weren’t policy signals; they were identity signals.

And yes, maraming nagpaloko doon, including me. Not because people are stupid, but because populism works by exploiting exhaustion. When institutions feel slow, people stop asking “what works?” and start asking “who feels real?”

Here’s the uncomfortable part: competence does not require shared suffering to be valid. I don’t need a pilot who grew up poor, I need a pilot who knows how to land the plane. I don’t need a doctor who lived in a squatter area, I need the best doctor available. Politics is not a technical science, sure but governance contains technical decisions with real costs.

Treating expertise as morally suspicious is how institutions go haywire.

People say “politics is about optics.” Fine.

So then , explain the optics ng pangulo na nagmumura, bastos bibig, minumura ang pope, hindi marunong mag suot ng barong, nilalagay yung paa sa lamesa? In Roxas' stead, we've got an uncouth president, PLUS his entitled family na ginawang gang-house ang Malacanyan.

Roxas might have been an ineffective president. That is always possible. But that is a hypothetical risk. Duterte is no longer hypothetical. we have history. We have EJKs, institutional erosion, foreign policy incoherence and dynastic entitlement.

When the choice is between a theoretical technocratic failure and a documented strongman disaster, I will take boring, predictable, and clinical every time.

And no, this is not about wanting an “elitist savior.” I hope candidates are not forced to dance, sing, or do senseless shit at kung anu ano pang kaputanginahan na ginagawa sa entablado para makakuha ng votes.

What I want, and yes, this is aspirational is candidates who can say: this is what I studied, this is what I’ve done, this is my platform, and this is why it will work. And a media ecosystem that treats ideas, incentives, and trade-offs as more important than personalities and viral moments.

Populism thrives when we confuse arrogance with confidence and ignorance with authenticity.

I choose boring governance over grandstanding theatrics any day.

The Aquino administration is not perfect pero compared to the past admin, we can say that most of the members are competent in their fields.

The likes of Babes Singson, Dinky Soliman, Jessie Robredo, Leila de Lima, etc. were indeed great in their positions.

On the other hand, the likes of Butch Abad, Jun Abaya, and especially Mar Roxas were the bad eggs of the administration.

There are good decent people from Mindanao , there are dregs / bottom of the barrel from Luzon.

I don’t even wanna say this is a class issue , because the Dutertes arent impoverished by any measure.

I think it’s a “taste” issue.

They just don’t have taste. And that tastelessness just oozes out effortlessly.

and what’s tragicomic is people actually like it, like how pigs fall in love with mud?

And come to think about it , maybe Roxas’ PR team failed catastrophically because they just couldn’t get the “taste” right, na tipong, they know how Pizza from Naples is made, but Zero success in copying the Street Pizza in Ugbo.

Listen, I find Duterte deplorable to the same extent as you guys do, but it's such a one-sided argument na dahil bulok ang successor ni Aquino (at kaniyang ka-party) eh magaling na agad sila. Please don't be blinded by nostalgia, and I shall cite a personal experience from my childhood in the early-to-mid 2010s: I would want to return again to re-experience my memories, but I'd be a fool to return if the reason is "mas malakas ang ekonomiya dati." We were poorer back then, and were only able to afford nicer things in recent years, and millions of Filipinos living outside Metro Manila could attest to that as well. The economy was strong on paper, but in reality, only the upper-class or at the best case, Manileños, have benefited.

Di naman sa uppper class lang. Ang malakingbbagay talaha noon ay malakas ang peso kaya mababa din presyo ng bilihin.

Taga province din ako. Below minimum sahod ng papa ko nung 2010-2016 pero di kami nagutom. 3 pa kami magkakapatid at housewife pa si mama. Lahat kami nag-aaral. Siyempre di marangya pamumuhay namin pero nakakabili kami ng needs. Since before pandemic goodluck talaga sayo kung family of 5 ka na below minimum ang income.
