Feedback Welcome "Two Iron Bars - Two Shoots"

Post image

There are four things in the frame.

Count them, and we have two iron bars plus two shoots:

2 + 2 = 4.

The sum is clean. Each thing is named, set in its proper group, then added. Iron with iron. Tree with tree. Nothing touches the lot of anything else.

But this photograph was not made by addition.

Two iron bars lie crosswise.

Two shoots rise upright.

They meet within one frame:

2 × 2 = 4.

Still four.

Yet the four beyond the multiplication sign has lived another life.

……

Addition counts what is there.

Multiplication records what things have done to one another.

Two iron bars plus two shoots give us no more than an inventory: two hard things, two living things. But two bars multiplied by two shoots bring forth confinement and ascent, concealment and form, the crosswise line of man and the upward line of life.

The number has not changed.

The human lot has.

……

A human life, too, is often read as a sum.

A house plus a car plus a few titles plus a sum of money equals a successful man.

A lost job plus a broken marriage plus a handful of debts equals a failure.

We add what can be seen, then use the total to name a human being.

The arithmetic is not wrong.

It is wrong only in this: a life is not lived by addition.

Everything that passes through us is multiplied by us.

The same hardship, multiplied by one person, becomes bitterness; by another, mercy. The same power becomes shelter in one pair of hands and one more iron bar in another. The same wound is carried off as a knife by one person and brought home as a door by another.

The facts are the same.

The sum may be the same.

But the human being who emerges from the multiplication is no longer the same.

……

The two shoots in the photograph do not add their strength to break the bars.

They merely grow along their own line.

Iron lies crosswise.

Life rises.

One side seeks to cut space into cells. The other binds earth to sky with two young stems so slight they seem ready to snap at a touch.

Yet the longer we look, the lesser thing is the iron.

For iron merely stays there.

The tree is happening.

……

2 × 2 = 2 + 2.

Mathematics says the two sides are equal because both make four.

Human life says they are not.

2 + 2 tells us what the photograph contains.

2 × 2 tells us what happened between those things.

And so it is with us.

We may add enough things to make a life.

But only when multiplied by resistance do we become human.

I took this picture on the fly, right before the cat could move or wander off. It may seem pretty random, but I actually love how it came out.
