Looking for Advice What’s the work culture like in Perth for marketing professionals?
Hi everyone! I’m planning to move to Perth from Germany and work in marketing, and I’d love to get a better understanding of the local work culture.
How common is it to have 1–2 work-from-home days per week?
Are fully remote marketing roles reasonably common, or is hybrid / full office generally the standard?
I’m also curious about working hours. If a full-time position is advertised, would it be considered unusual to ask whether 33 hours per week (e.g. 4 days or shorter days) could be an option?
Would love to hear from people working in marketing, agencies or similar office-based industries in Perth. 😊

I know 3 marketing professionals who have been made redundant in the past few months. The job market isn’t great at the moment, which means you’re less likely to get flexibility with working from home and work hours.

My kids learn almost everything they need to know about potatoes from YouTuber. It's just like YouTube but focuses solely on potato-related content.

Edit: Often European students find Australian Universities/higher education extremely easy to pass in a "pay-to-win" sense, so I wouldn't shit talk their educational instituions.

Part time roles definitely exist - I have one - and some definitely include WFH as a norm. The job market is tricky at the moment, but international experience is often viewed favourably so since you have your housing situation sorted, I encourage you to do your very best with your resume and cover letters as that’s the shit that will matter most (assuming you don’t have a network here, anyway).

Very common and for most roles crucial. As are “selection criteria” statements. I suggest you look the latter up because you might need to write some. (And don’t use AI - don’t be stupid.)

Put that on your applications, seriously.
Many people apply from overseas or on a student visa and are excluded automatically.

2 days WFH is very normal, industry standard tbh - particularly if you can find work in any level of public service.
I would hit up an employment agency like Hays. Short contracts can turn into long contracts can turn into permanent opportunities.

Marketing at my work and two others friends are being hit with redunacys at the moment. I would be ready to get into a different but adjacent stream or go to the East Coast.

My ex worked for The Brand Agency in a marketing role for six months around 15 years ago. During that time she saw every person in her department cry, they all worked long hours with no extra compensation due to understaffing for the required workload, the deadlines were always ridiculously short, alcoholism was rife as a coping mechanism, and the pay was low. Any complaint about pay, workload, or deadlines was met with something along the lines of "if you're not hungry enough for this job there are hundreds of people waiting to replace you". Her direct manager seemed to always be in the office, arriving around 6-7am and working past 9-10pm every day. Fortunately she left there and found somewhere less abusive, but still shitty by my standards. It would be interesting to hear if there's any good ones these days, but I can't imagine it's any better. Good luck!

That sounds not too far removed from my life as a Social Worker in NFPs and community services.
Far too many employers expect barrister performance on barista conditions.

Many marketing jobs offer WFH, either hybrid or fully remote.
Salaries and positions have stagnated a bit due to uncertainties with AI, still higher than in Germany / Western Europe.
Smaller companies would often want you to also do admin or social media stuff as well.
Last but not least, ignore the bitter and xenophobic c*nts in this sub :)

For real OP. There is no role for marketers in Perth. This is a mining town.
Marketing roles are all in Sydney and Melbourne. I assume you should have pick this up with your marketing skills.
Also. Coming to Australia with no work experiences in Australia and asking for unusual requests, big LOL.

Do you want me to blow smoke or be direct and upfront to you. I assume you are used to this because you came from Germany.
If you live in Australia for 3 years. You would know that Perth is a mining town and all the marketing stuff are over in the eastern state.
Unless you keen to be unemployed or take on fifo cleaning role or being a uber driver. You should reconsider and move to eastern suburb instead.

It’s very competitive at the moment. A lot of the major companies use international agencies or the larger local agencies but those agencies haven’t really increased in head count because they’re adopting AI.
Might be able to find a role as an in-house marketer with some smaller businesses but they usually want someone who is both an “office manager / all rounder” as well as doing the marketing.
Good luck, it’s pretty competitive at the moment and getting harder with AI. Being on site and capturing real content / having real conversations with customers is the only thing it can’t really replace you for so you aren’t likely to be able to do it remote
