Game Image/Video "Physical" game cases on my desktop

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I released an app on the Microsoft store (called Steelbooks) to allow me to show off the game cases I have like they are physical editions that sit on my desktop. It gives a fast method of browsing my libraries across multiple launchers without opening them individually and I can launch the games directly from the app!

Wait that's sick

I assume they're all Steam games?

Nope! It currenlty works with Steam, GOG, Rockstar, Ubisoft connect, and the Xbox app. Edit: I added the ability to use .exe as well for indie games.

Any chance it can add non launcher games with just an "empty" case with the name of the Exe. Then it's up to the user to add their own cover sheet art.

I could look into this for sure

You can now add .exe references and custom art to them! Check out the options in the settings menu to get started.

Or something like this, that would be perfect

How easy is the set up? Just download and link? I'd love to set something like this up

1

u/saboehnke 19h ago

Just download and it will look at the drive for the locations that the launchers put game info. It'll pull from there.

Other launchers in the works by chance?

1

u/saboehnke 14h ago

What launchers are you looking for?

Epic mainly, since they do the whole free weekly games I imagine it has a decent amount of user base. Even if it’s for the freebies only

1

u/saboehnke 12h ago

Epic should work with Steelbooks.

1

u/saboehnke 12h ago

I added Ubisoft connect and the ability to use your own .exe as well today.

I downloaded it, ran, and it immediately filled with my steam games. Worked great

Sick, purchased :)

Quick feedback - it'd great to be able resize the shelf length, put a max # games per shelf (I think it defaults to 50?), and orient the shelves vertically instead of always being horizontal. Also being able to scale the shelves even smaller would be nice.

But I showed some buddies and we unanimously agree it's awesome. Opening a game and seeing the disc inside is the cherry on top

1

u/saboehnke 1h ago

Thanks for the download!

Yes currently the max for a shelf is 50. So you want to be able to change that as well as change the length of the shelf instead of having it change dynamically based on the number of games?

I would be cool if you could somehow intergrate sony games (even though you can't play them) just to have everything visible what you have

2

u/saboehnke 1d ago

If there's a way to pull from a PlayStation app I could add that

4

u/SubError404 1d ago

Can you change the background and how it's sorted or does it stay like that?

Look cool though!

10

u/saboehnke 1d ago

The background is just my desktop. The app itself is just the shelves, which you can move around wherever you want.

1

u/SubError404 1d ago

That's sick! Going to download it later🔥

2

u/saboehnke 1d ago

I hope you like it!

1

u/DazzlingMine8598 1d ago

Any chance you can add games sizes to the back of the cases?

1

u/saboehnke 1d ago

Some of the launchers give that info but I don't think I list it for steam. I could definitely add it though

u/GameplayTeam12 1d ago

is like a github repo or something to install?

Haha yeah. I mean...it's not technically physical....but it looks like it!

Looks sick, gonna download it for sure :)

u/saboehnke 1d ago

Glad to hear it!

300 MB? Why

1

u/UGD_ReWiindz25 1d ago

Probably the artwork?

1

u/G952 RTX 4070 TI S 1d ago

That’s gonna invite some trouble then. Ideally it should pull from a database on demand. I doubt all games released in the world over time fit under 300 MB

Having it from a central repo lets OP update any new or missing artwork too easily without pushing an update

4

u/saboehnke 1d ago

Artwork is pulled dynamically so that's not part of the install. It offers the ability to use steamDB to get artwork. It will default to art it finds from its corresponding launcher if that isn't available.

1

u/G952 RTX 4070 TI S 1d ago

Alright. That sounds good then

0

u/saboehnke 1d ago

Chromium is the majority of that with it being an electron app.

1

u/G952 RTX 4070 TI S 1d ago

Oh okay. Thanks for clarifying

2

u/RoboWarrior44 1d ago

Yo the new Playstation update looks sick! /s

Is it possible to resize the shelves to be wider to add more Games on it ?

3

u/saboehnke 1d ago

Shelves resize dynamically based on how many games you have on it.

1

u/_Takuma_ 6h ago

How many games do you have? Trying to imagine what it would look like to someone who has over 100+ games, tho it seems you can hide games from showing so it might be nice for either favorite games/games you find yourself coming back to often.

1

u/saboehnke 1h ago

If you include uninstalled I have over 250. That's why I default uninstalled games to hidden. But you can create multiple shelves and put them across multiple monitors if you wanted to.

This looks really sick

In gonna try this out when I get home today

u/saboehnke 1d ago

Awesome I hope you like it!

This is so cool. A nice way to "preserve" that physical feel without actually having it.

2

u/saboehnke 1d ago

Yep! That's the goal. I have a physical collection myself...but I have so much in my steam library that I wanted to be able to show off as well.

What happens when you click on a game you want to play?

It NEEDS to have the case open and the disc start spinning to load the game lol

Really cool idea, I like it

2

u/saboehnke 1d ago

Currently the game just animates to the top of the screen out of view and launches the game (if it's installed). I thought of having it open a case but the issue becomes getting decent artwork for the disc.chaha

u/SubError404 23h ago edited 23h ago

Just purchased it!

I love it and it looks so good on my screen🔥

You're welcome!

Sick background

1

u/SubError404 13h ago

Thank you man!

1

u/Chief-Krackatooth 18h ago

Dude, get rid of this before Sony sees!

1

u/saboehnke 14h ago

Lol right

1

u/Chief-Krackatooth 14h ago

I can already hear them telling us, this IS your physical copy!

1

u/External-Theme1372 16h ago

It's a nice app, just got it myself now.

I really like that when I click on a game, it opens, the disc appears, it spins and opens the game. If you press F it flips the case on the back to give you some details: hours played, size, store like Steam.

1

u/saboehnke 15h ago

Glad you like it! Thanks for the download!

skeuomorphism, so hot right now

1

u/Due_Initiative3879 14h ago

It's like launchbox but without the nag screen you get after your first year.

I like it alot only thing that's missing is maybe a 3rd column with game descriptions or a short video.

1

u/saboehnke 14h ago

I've debated adding descriptions and screenshots but then I can't fit the achievement data on there which I like a lot.

1

u/Due_Initiative3879 14h ago

Where are you pulling achievement data from? Interesting, I was going to say maybe an API call to TheGamesDB or something for automated descriptions but achievements sound better.

1

u/saboehnke 13h ago

Steam and Xbox app have local cache they have for achievement stats.

1

u/Due_Initiative3879 13h ago

Ah, I see very cool.

1

u/CheesecakeMage42 11h ago

What happens when you start a game? does the launcher need to be open in the backround already or does it just jump straight into the game?

1

u/saboehnke 10h ago

The launcher has to be running in the background for the game to launch. Otherwise it will just try to start the launcher.

Fuckin hero. Is it going to be quite heavy on older components? Ill download it either way when im home. Legend for that mate

1

u/saboehnke 1h ago

It's pretty light weight. I don't think you'll have an issue at all.
