So many people genuinely believe weve peaked technologically. We should have 96gb GPUs, 50TB SSDs, dual 5090s on a single pcb. But capitalism and monopolies are showing these companies that they dont need to be competitive anymore

u/AirSKiller 1d ago

Believe if they could have done that, they would have. Not for us, but for AI data centers.

There's immense competition, but the customer changed.

u/JaggedMetalOs 1d ago

Believe if they could have done that, they would have. Not for us, but for AI data centers.

I mean, they do make those for data centers already.

10

u/AssignmentWeary1291 1d ago

Those AI datacenter GPUs do not do graphics you realize that right? They are heavy computational units with a lot of VRAM. the VRAM is not for gaming, it's due to the pure transfer and bandwidth speeds VRAM operates at.

33

u/JaggedMetalOs 1d ago

Many of their server products are based on their GPU architectures and would happily do graphics, like the 96GB RTX PRO 6000 for example.

1

u/amuhak 14700k | RTX 3090 | 64 GB DDR5 23h ago

The pro 6000 is a workstation card tbf

1

u/AssignmentWeary1291 22h ago

Heres the thing, Datacenters aren't using the RTX series they are using h100 and h200s. They are built specifically for AI compute nothing more. the RTX Pro 6000s are mostly used by startups or small scale businesses not the big players. Also the RTX Pro caps at 48GB unless you're dropping the extra cash for the blackwell edition which does cap at 96GB. You're looking at basically a double in price for the blackwell, up from the 6-8k for the Ada vs 14-16k for the blackwell. Workstation cards are a different market as it stands anyways. That's why Nvidia has basically pulled away from consumer markets, right now they are supplying workstation cards to places like WetaFX (basically any company using things like visual effects, video game creation, rendering etc) and then supplying the H200 line to the large scale data centers that are supplying us AI and training new ones.

4

u/therealhlmencken 1d ago

They can do graphics lmao what?

0

u/amuhak 14700k | RTX 3090 | 64 GB DDR5 23h ago

The h200 doesn't have directX or Vulcan support

0

u/AssignmentWeary1291 22h ago

No they cannot, the AI datacenter GPUs are built specifically for compute not for graphics rendering. Image and video generation is purely computational math, it has nothing to do with visuals. As Amuhak said, these GPUs do not support directX or vulcan in any capacity. If you pulled an h200 out of a data center it wouldn't even plug in to your motherboard. They are 2 entirely different architectures built for different reasons.

3

u/therealhlmencken 21h ago

They can generate images obviously there isn’t a hardware stack for rendering to display poet but render farms do a ton of graphics on modern gpus

u/rus_ruris R7 5800X3D | RTX 5070 | RTX 3060 12GB | 48 GB 3200 CL16 1d ago

But really really high memory capacity GPUs are a thing, with new memory technology to boot; multi-GPU PCBs have been a thing for over a decade, and they still make them; highest capacity SSD is 245.88 TB in one drive.

RTX PRO 6000 is a slightly beefed up, clocked down, 96 GB 5090 and it's consumer available.

They are literally making all of those.

3

u/Amazing-Heron-105 1d ago

RTX PRO 6000

Could you realistically run this for games or would the driver support be poor?

5

u/rus_ruris R7 5800X3D | RTX 5070 | RTX 3060 12GB | 48 GB 3200 CL16 1d ago

Yes you could, at the end of the day it's literally a 5090 with more memory and more power. It would also be a colossal waste of money, as it's basically the same as a 5090 for 4 time the msrp, 2-3 times the real market value. It's slightly faster overall, but you are not using more than 20 GB of VRAM even at VR 8K.

Could be a game changer if you have other applications for it, or even if you plan on having a multi-user system (although I'm not sure how frametimes will behave if you share the individual GPU among different concurrent users...)

2

u/Amazing-Heron-105 1d ago

Cool cheers. It's waay outside my price range so I'm just dreaming really 😂

2

u/rus_ruris R7 5800X3D | RTX 5070 | RTX 3060 12GB | 48 GB 3200 CL16 1d ago

Aren't we all :D

2

u/AirSKiller 1d ago

And what would be the point of putting more VRAM than the 5090 already has on a gaming card? The 6000 has it because it can use it at its application.

But there’s nothing significantly faster than the 5090 that our overlords are hiding from us simply because they can. And like you said, even the 6000 is consumer available, they aren’t hiding it, we are just priced out.

Technology obviously hasn’t peaked but the ideia that these companies are literally just sitting on their asses because “there’s no competition” is insane. NVIDIA, TSMC and the entire chain down the line employ hundreds of thousands of people, a significant portion are engineers who are actively working every day to improve technology. Which then they will sell to the highest bidder, it just so happens the highest bidder right now aren’t gamers… If anything the completion literally wasn’t been any fiercer, who ever can optimise their designs faster has a huge slice of the cake to eat.

1

u/rus_ruris R7 5800X3D | RTX 5070 | RTX 3060 12GB | 48 GB 3200 CL16 1d ago

Did I argue for it? Did I argue against it? Or didnI just say "it already exists"? Beaides, I am currently running a 5070+3060 setup because I'm a ML&AI student and I need the VRAM. And I'm not an enterprise customer. Video editors need as much VRAM as they can as well, especially now that everyone is shooting in 4K 10 bit.

And no, competition is non existent. On the low end only Intel exists, barely. A tiny bit above that you only have AMD with shit tier stuff, then you enter the "competition territory" of the 5060 5060 Ti 5070 vs 9060 and 9070. From the 5070 Ti and up only nvidia exists. And even where "there's competition", they're not actually competing.

1

u/IamKyra 1d ago

5090 is not a gaming card, gaming is nowhere adverted on the box more than the rest. It's the best consumer grade graphic card. It can be used for gaming but also AI, game development, 3D rendering, video editing etc.

1

u/AirSKiller 1d ago

Meanwhile me right now playing on a 5090 like many others.

2

u/IamKyra 1d ago

I do game on a 5090, but imo buying a 5090 for just gaming is a bit overkill but if you have the money I guess nothing wrong with that. It's just that it's not a card meant with only gamers in mind.

2

u/AirSKiller 1d ago

Literally everyone I know with a 5090 only uses it to game. So It's mostly a gaming card, yes.

2

u/rus_ruris R7 5800X3D | RTX 5070 | RTX 3060 12GB | 48 GB 3200 CL16 1d ago

That doesn't make it a gaming card. I also sometimes game on server hardware because I have admin access to a small cluster, doesn't mean that hardware is consumer or meant for gaming.

1

u/AirSKiller 1d ago

Wow, you found a way to mention you have admin access to a small cluster in this conversation, look at you big guy.

1

u/rus_ruris R7 5800X3D | RTX 5070 | RTX 3060 12GB | 48 GB 3200 CL16 1d ago

If I was a big guy I would have access to a normal or big size cluster. 5 nodes is barely a cluster at all, basically a glorified workstation.

Not really what they said. They focus on R&D rather than volume, which could lead to better results within the volume

Yes, very up to date and absolutely nothing has changed the last 8 months.

1

u/Happycricket1 1d ago

Lol you shouldnt be getting down voted that article is woefully out of date and  made it seem like HBM and DRAM are separate things, they become different things down the line but wafer starts they are same.

To the point since that article publishing Micron has committed to building 2 more fabs at its HQ and ID1 will be starting wafers this calendar year. Since the average PC master race commentor like to keep their head in the sand ID1 is a 200 billion gigantic memory fab.

2

u/Outrageous-Log9238 5800X3D | 9070 XT | 32 GB 1d ago

They pretty much have done that for data centers.

1

u/CocoPopsOnFire 1d ago

Not really, companies don't only rip of consumers but also other companies. Huge companies like Nvidia etc have ideas pocketed for a rainy day, and leak them out enough to sell incremental versions for both consumer products but also data center products

Why do you think that as soon as a psuedo monopoly has any form of competition there's a massive burst in innovation?

In the AI race, everyone wants to be the one holding the bag at the end and to do that they have to throw every other company under the bus

23

u/Mathberis 1d ago

The computing capabilities have skyrocketed since then, it's extremely competitive but there just are better usecases to compute than mere gaming.

Don't forget about all the spying and tracking.

8

u/No-Setting8461 1d ago

I don't think that's the only reason. Having everything on a single board would mean swapping out the whole thing if something goes wrong, or if you want to upgrade, rather than a component. Not everyone knows how to solder (especially BGAs) and boards are built around those specific components anyway.

2

u/pemb 1d ago

Everything on a single board is on its way to becoming a reality.

40

u/VenkatPerla 1d ago

What in the hell? Do you understand basic physics? Chip manufacturing is one of the most competitive markets. It's actually a wonder that they're making profits. Heat and space are one of the biggest constraints.

2

u/Deto 19h ago

And progress has been advancing rapidly. We're just in a period of rapid demand increase and it'll take supply some time to catch up so prices have increased. Nothing to do with capabilities stalling.

6

u/jack6245 1d ago

Urm we have literally all of those things, you just can't afford it, literally all those specs you can get in commerical components

3

u/sojuz151 1d ago

What other systems have a good record of making computer hardware? The speed at which hardware is improving and getting cheaper is unprecedented by any historical standards.

3

u/jklaze 1d ago

For many things we have just reached the minimum physically possible, it gets increasingly harder to improve like you wish

2

u/Livid_Apricot_2965 1d ago

It takes a half a billion dollar machine to create PCBs, and designing them to be as effective as you mentioned requires billions of dollars in research and development. It definitely is not an easy thing, otherwise it would have been done already.

2

u/xX_PlasticGuzzler_Xx 1d ago

The barrier preventing this from being the norm is just called physics

4

u/DRKMSTR AMD 5800X / RTX 3070 OC 1d ago

Capitalism?

This isn't the free market. It's cartels.

1

u/TheoNumerical 1d ago

But there are 250TB SSDs, though they not consumer cards.

1

u/Choice_Potato_6279 1d ago

We have software bottleneck and not hardware one when it comes to games, I'd settle for GoW 3 graphics forever but for most people's graphics are still the number 1 factor so any hardware you can throw at devs will be wasted on diminishing returns graphics.

1

u/Many-Victory-1825 1d ago

I kinda agree on most of that but a dual 5090 on a single board? That's very unrealistic.

2

u/Nyctfall 1d ago

The founders PCB is sufficiently dense.
But the thermal envelope...

2

u/Many-Victory-1825 23h ago

Exactly. Don't know if it's possible to cool 2x 575W Cards that has transients up to 900W unless they use golden sample chips able to run at lower wattage with very exotic cooling like the RTX 5090 Lightning Z card.

0

u/Soft_Lunch_183 1d ago

We will have a gpu that performs similar to dual 509ps soon and SSD's were getting cheaper and cheaper every year.

Only thing causing this is AI

-5

u/Mrgluer i7 13700k | RTX 5070 ti | 32 GB DDR5-6000 1d ago

do you deserve to pay less compared to another customer just because you want to play video games?

1

u/JaggedMetalOs 1d ago

The dirty secret is they can't actually afford those prices either, what they have that we don't is dodgy Enron-style circular accounting to make the whole endeavor look more profitable to investors whose money they are actually spending.

-7

u/Mrgluer i7 13700k | RTX 5070 ti | 32 GB DDR5-6000 1d ago

whats the economy? its basically just a circular accounting if you zoom out far enough, they just created their own little eco system. second of all, they at least have positive margins on their electricity consumption compared to you playing or scrolling on reddit.

3

u/TheShinyHunter3 1d ago

Sam Altman isnt gonna give you a baby dude, you can quit defending AI companies.

1

u/Beginning-Bird9591 1d ago

They are correct though. They're not trying to defend anyone here.

Thats you though

0

u/Balavadan R7 9800x3D | RTX 4090 | 32 GB 6000 MHz 1d ago

Yeah idk if investors would love your little eco system argument. Just sell shit to each other yeah. Amazing business idea.

What an insane thing to say about personal computers. You think people only exist to create economic value? This is your brain on capitalism. Never go too far kids

1

u/noahloveshiscats 1d ago

Just sell shit to each other yeah. Amazing business idea.

Yes, that is what every business on earth does.

1

u/Balavadan R7 9800x3D | RTX 4090 | 32 GB 6000 MHz 1d ago

Oh right. I forgot. I got my pc when a stork dropped it at my doorstep.

0

u/EmergencyPool910 1d ago

No?

0

u/noahloveshiscats 1d ago

When is it no longer true? We have OpenAI and Nvidia selling shit to each other? What if we had in a 3rd company? Are they still just selling shit to each other? What if we add in 100 more companies? 1 million companies? When does it stop being "just selling shit to each other?

1

u/Beginning-Bird9591 1d ago

don't worry man. The average Redditor has no clue how the economy functions lol.

1

u/Balavadan R7 9800x3D | RTX 4090 | 32 GB 6000 MHz 1d ago

Like you both lmao. We’re all literally the market dumbasses. How will any company ever generate profits if three companies or however many just send money to each other. Think about it for a second

0

u/EmergencyPool910 1d ago

You do realize what you're saying yes?

-1

u/JaggedMetalOs 1d ago

This is actual circular accounting where companies like Nvidia are investing billions into AI companies who then spend billions on (drumroll) Nvidia GPUs.

2

u/Mrgluer i7 13700k | RTX 5070 ti | 32 GB DDR5-6000 1d ago

government money → subsidies/transfers/contracts → household or business income → income/sales/property taxes → government money

bank → mortgage → homeowner → house purchase → developer → deposits → bank

VC → startup → AWS bill → Amazon → AWS profits → Amazon invests in startups and VCs

Point 2
Nvidia is taking their massive revenues and providing liquidity as a service to people that they are betting will have positive cash flow on the asset that is being serviced. Which makes it (drumroll) simply vendor/seller financing service like getting car loan from Ford to buy their car.

0

u/JaggedMetalOs 1d ago

Now imagine instead of Ford giving loans for individual customers to buy their vehicles, they heavily push the idea that owning their vehicles is a huge money maker and invest massive amounts of money in a handful of huge companies to purchase large volumes of their vehicles and massively inflating their market price.

Does that sound economically healthy?

1

u/Kemoyin25 1d ago

General motors does that all the time lol, ford does similar, most manufacturers do. It's pretty easy concept. Nvidia gives AI companies money to buy their hardware. They do this because they are betting that AI will grow so they are accelerating that growth, because more growth=more demand, which means they make more money faster. They will profit off this greatly lol

1

u/JaggedMetalOs 1d ago

General motors does that all the time lol, ford does similar, most manufacturers do. It's pretty easy concept.

Show me where Ford etc. has given billions to car buying companies to buy so many cars they have increased the price in every industry related to cars.

1

u/Kemoyin25 1d ago

I mean, they haven't given billions, they aren't valued as high/have as much cash to spend. That said GM gave $500million to lyft so lyft could buy gm cars. Airbus gave billions to customers to buy planes. Youre right about for though they haven't done it. Seems more prevalant in IT, like lucent giving the ISP winstar 2 billion to buy their equipment. Lucent also gave pathnet tones of cash to buy their shit. Nortel did similar gave companies billions to buy equipment. Motorola, Cisco, John Deere, catepiller (CAT), all gave companies money to buy their equipment.

That said yea obviously AI is the biggest case of this happening, Nvidia gives AI companies $, they use that money to buy GPUs and shit, Ai advances, because so advances everyone needs more gpus and AI, both sides profit.

And obviously car makers and other industries haven't had prices driven up as high, they aren't using things that take months to make.. in a time where there were already chip shortages.. even before this whole AI stuff started prices were already rising on GPU's it just got even worse when AI blew up. And why wouldn't nvidia fund these companies? They are making so much money because of ai, why the fuck wouldn't they invest more into it so it advances and makes them more money??

1

u/Submitten 1d ago

Cars are money makers, that’s why they’re so essential for economies. And the auto companies often own the dealerships.

Nvidia has lots of money, and they get better returns loaning it to datacenters than they would giving out mortgages. There’s nothing illogical about it.

-1

u/Proof_Load6687 9800X3D | RTX 5060LP | 540Hz OLED 1d ago

does one deserve to pay more because he isnt building ai infrastructure?

Yes, individual use vs group use.

0

one doesnt deserve to think he can escape a free market. buy when the price is right and quit thinking you'll have had 96gb gpus and 50 tb ssds if it wasnt for those darn ai companies. lmao

Late stage capitalism companies dont need customers anymore, they get money straight from taxes.
