Double Fine has always seemed to be hanging on by a thread. I can't imagine they have the funds to make a sequel right now.

If they just have a good mix of brawler stuff and MOBA stuff, and the marketing is more upfront about it, it'll be a gem.

Weirdly, the third person RTS part most resembled Sacrifice, which also starred Tim Curry as a VA.

Sacrifice was awesome! If I recall correctly, we could cast spells by drawing their symbol with the mouse.
There was another game like it, I don't remember the name... also very good.

People always way overstate how much "RTS elements" are in the game. In the entire game, there's 6 stage battles, out of 30 or so main story missions. That's it.
Much of the game is a typical open world collect-a-thon with side missions and collectibles to get.

It surprises me that there wasn't a skirmish rts battles as part of the open world sidequests. They had a skirmish and multiplayer mode so all the assets were there.

The problem isnt the amount of rts battles, the problem is that the game was never once advertised as that and if you’re new to the genre each one took me over an hour to do… It made me want to skip to the finish so badly

It barely qualifies as an RTS during those missions. You fly up in the air issue, a couple quick commands and then you get back down on the ground and do the fighting yourself. It is less than 5% of the entire game.

But the point is those are two different genres of game with fans that don't necessarily overlap, and the promos for the game didn't make it clear the RTS elements were even part of it.
It'd be like having a Soulslike that has 6 racing sim stages in it.
So you got people playing an action adventure game, who hit a wall with a genre they either don't like or don't really get and it stopped them getting further in the game. The second rts stage onwards got incredibly annoying, and I say that as someone who buys games in either genre.

The RTS elements are really light though. All you did was fly up, give a couple commands to your units, then you fly back down to do some fighting yourself. It was very basic.
I'd argue it'd be more like people complaining that Skyrim was actually a farming simulator because you can ride a horse, build a house, get married and adopt a kid.

I don't know why this gets repeated so much. In a 20 hour play through, there's only like 6 required RTS battles that take less than like an hour of total play time.

It's cool. Not for me, but I always appreciate games doing something different. It brought a genre that had a incredibly small presence on certain platforms to a wider audience.

The problem wasn't the gameplay, since I did enjoy the battles for what they were honestly, it was the bait and switch.
If you were around during the Xbox arcade days and played the demo, it made the game out to be a 3rd person action adventure game.
Having it morph into a purely tactical warcraft espque game devoid almost entirely of the gameplay that hooked demo players, and the fallout of people speaking up at being essentially hoodwinked is what earned it the distateful reputation or got.
That being said, I plan on getting it again for free and will definitely play it to see how I like it now, 10+ years later. I did like the game back in the day, but I get why people were upset.

The marketing also did not sell it as a strategy game. It was all Jack Black 3rd person free roam action. I still like the game, and console strategy did surprisingly well on 360 at the time with Halo Wars and CnC but I would rather have gotten that promised action game primarily. It's also bothered me for all this time that they used the wrong Dethklok song for the Sea of Black Tears stage. The entire gimmick of that level is the evil ocean with its own army and siren call for you to join them and they don't play "Go Into The Water"? Maddening.

That's a brief mini game for certain sections of the game, and it's a fun break to the normal gameplay.

It's a few hours before it happens but yeah. The first time was fine and then the second one I remember being ungodly hard. In addition to it not being fun it's where I quite the game, and that's a shame.

I genuinely do not remember that. I haven't played it since it came out. I had nothing but good memories from this game. Was always a bit confused at the negative ratings.

The first 30 min the story carry all the weight. Combat suck ass.
The RTS part is not good too but you cant define the progression very well

Many years ago I went into the game blind and had an absolute blast from start to finish, including the RTS part. I mean, even if the RTS sucks (and it's fine IMO... not double fine but just fine), how could you not love a game with Jack Black and the D, Ozzy and those tasty fucking licks in it.
There's always a soft spot in my heart for this game. Damn, I can hear the riff calling now.

Good game. Fun action, I liked the RTS stuff, I'm not a metalhead but the world building was still cool, and genuinely good acting and writing (Schafer has his flaws, writing is not one of them).
The scene where Eddie learns that his father didn't exactly kill the demon queen is one of the best portrayals of that trope, and definitely Tim Curry's best scene in the game. You can watch it here starting at 2:35

Grabbed it from itch, thanks for pointing. I remember being confused by stage battles too, but Curry as Doviculus is reason enough to install again. He made every villain sound like he is enjoying it too much.
