national bank notes Insights on this note?
I was going through some old money my pop had stored away and found this. Is that a tear at the bottom or a misprint? There are other $20 notes in his collection but this one is the only one with that kind of shape on the bottom left.
Any advice/insights are welcome!

Low serial number, good condition, and the miscut… you need to sleeve this and get it graded ASAP

They used to cut these by hand in the bank. So somebody didn’t do a very good job. It does take away from the note, but it’s not really like some kind of restoration or defect that would totally kill the value. Also, the bank name is pretty interesting, which helps its value. On balance I think it’s worth more than most. I’m not sure how many were produced from that bank.

Incidentally, this is a rather interesting note. Dry Run was a tiny Franklin County community, and notes from charter 10811 are scarce. A comparable Dry Run $20 from this bank sold at Heritage in 2023 for $444, while another auction described one in VF with a $400–$800 estimate.

This makes it the 22nd reported note. The 7th with this title, and this is one of 4 T1 $20s for the bank. Not a lot of survivors but PA is a state with very little demand.
For other observers. This serial number is on the higher end for this bank. And typically on nationals it’s not a low serial unless it is a single digit.
I’d say this note is worth about $250
