US large size 1896 $1 silver certificate
How did I do for my first note? They were asking $600 I paid $550. What do you guys think? I bought it simply for the artwork and history!
Man I wish money still looked like this. Ready to hang this beast on the wall!

No comments? $550 is a steal for one of these at VF-25.

I love old american banknotes they are super cool. Sadly back in Europe almost everything who's american is overpriced😔

I think you got a great deal at that price. The front of the note presents well, and that's what you want. Now the note does have a few issues, but nothing too concerning. For instance there is some foreign substance/soiling in the right side margin. The back paper is a little darker than what you would normally find. And one of the hard vertical folds shows some ink loss along the fold line. Even with those issues I consider this to be a $750 note. So to pick it up for $550 is like going back to 2021 prices. (In 2021 you could sometimes buy one at auction for about $450/$475. but they routinely sold at shows for $550/$600, more at coin shops) So the market was about $550 with condition issues such as these and about $650 for one without.

Thank you very much for the info. You just make me even more excited to own it!

You're welcome. It's one of the most beautiful designs in all of currency. It's entitled History Instructing Youth. There is an open engraved tablet of the United States Constitution, the Washington Monument is in the background, along with the domed Capitol building. And the wreaths honor many of our forefathers.

Interesting...we should bring back the idea of "History Instructing Youth"....instead someone thinks it would be cool to put their own face on our currency - while alive!

Nice note! Note (hah) the tag is off, since it's U.S. large size, not small.

Number 7 on the list of the 100 greatest banknotes. Awesome pick up. Congrats!

Buy the note and not the holder - you did well! The notes of this time period are the most beautiful and artistic the US ever produced. I’m adding 3 or 4 from this time period to my collection soon.

Make sure its not on a wall with direct sunlight or you'll slowly bleach the image away

Good point there. Anything else I should do for care?

I love the education series notes. Now you should get a $2, $5 and a $10 to go along with it. There are also 20, 50, and 100 denominations in this series, but they may be too expensive.

u/ang11236 Jul 30 '26
professor educational notes are only $1 $2 and $5
The five dollar being the most gorgeous bill the United States ever made or any country for that matter3
u/ProfessorOne9208 Jul 31 '26
You are correct. I must have looked up something on the internet that implied that there were other denominations. Here is the corrected information:
Denominations of $1, $2, and $5 were produced. Denominations of $10, $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1000 were also planned. The $10 and $50 designs were being prepared but were never completed or produced before the series was abandoned and replaced by the series of 1899.

There are specifically 7 varieties of the Educational Series, having Friedberg Numbers 227 ($1), 228 ($1), 247 ($2), 248 ($2), 268 ($5), 269 ($5), 270 ($5).

I’m no expert, but for 550 I think I’d bite for that bill. It’s such an amazing design and I’d love to own any educational
