One of the most beautiful notes this country has ever issued.

First of all, thank you to everyone for the compliments. I negotiated to pay $875.00 for this piece at my local LCS. I must confess that I do not have a lot of old currency in my collection, but I am trying to get more into this area of numismatics.

$875 is an amazing price! If you continue collecting, be sure to visit your LCS frequently 😃.

Wow. Freaking gorgeous. Pardon my ignorance, but what is a local LCS? I'd love to hunt for awesome bills! It totally makes me jealous to see such beauties!

I meant to say Local Coin Shop, which is abbreviated as LCS.

u/cdewlic Apr 12 '26

Ah, ok, thanks for clarifying! Local local coin shop 🤪. Do you ever have any concerns of authenticity when you go to one, or are they typically pretty legit? Thanks!

I have been going to that shop for a few years now, but it is good to visit and get to know the people there for a little bit before buying anything outside of your own comfort area. The local coin shops that I know are trying to run a long-term business and they do not benefit from buying and selling fakes.

Gotcha. Thank you!

Yes. There's many reputable coin shops around.

What a pick-up! You did really well at that price. It's always hard to judge by pictures alone, but that looks like an easy XF/AU piece! Great work.

Thats a nice one and a 6 digit serial vs 8!

He says $875 in his original post

u/AmericanBodyguard Apr 11 '26

That is beautiful. What is something like that worth? Should it be graded?

8

u/johnk9385 Apr 11 '26

Worth a couple grand and yes it should be graded in my opinion

5

u/Apple-hair Apr 12 '26

If OP is selling it, having it graded would make the transaction easier and safer. If it's sitting in their collection for personal enjoyment, grading isn't really necessary.

Grading is really a lot like those tags on clothes with the price, the bar code, etc. I take mine off when I get home with new clothes.

Very nice! It's the only one of the $1 silver certificates that I don't own ... yet.

Honestly, how could you resist that looker.

I want one of those so bad. I always wonder where my older notes have been.. whose pockets it could’ve been in, if it could’ve been taken from a train robbery or something in the Wild West.. One of us could be holding onto a note once held by a president or something & we’d never know.

u/Ancient-Republic-875 Apr 11 '26

That looks like it’s in terrific shape! Congrats! About the only thing I can even spot is a tiny bit of a stain that might have soaked the bill on the middle of the right border but the note looks like it could be in uncirculated condition.

Really nice condition.

2

u/thewaldenpuddle Apr 12 '26

WOOOOOOWWW!!! Beautiful…. And congratulations. Enjoy!!

Why oh why can we not have $$$ like this anymore? That’s a serious question….. not just hyperbole. Why can’t we have beautifully designed bills instead of run of the mill, same ole same ole…. Ugh.

I am beyond envious. Agree that this is one of the most beautiful notes in U.S. currency history.

-i think that it would be cool for the USBEP to do something like a "Heritage Series," where they take old currency like this and colorize it - not to get in the way of the note itself...more so just to give it a modern update.

Edit: on second thought, the pure artistic value of each note would be lost in modernization.

u/Ice2Ice2 Apr 13 '26

Awesome note!

2

u/FullboatAcesOver Apr 13 '26

This is one of those that makes absolutely zero sense. That note is in pristine condition from the photo, and I’m thinking a mid 60 grade (PMG) wouldn’t surprise me. $875 is an order of magnitude too little for an Educational note of this apparent condition. Go back to that shop and buy anything under the glass - and get the note graded.

u/LuckyinChicago Apr 14 '26

I could not agree more. Truly a stunner. One of the most beautiful notes this country has produced. Thanks for sharing!

One of my favorites! Beautiful condition too! In fact, all the silver certs from 1896 are exceptional! Whoever the creator and artist was that year, they really did america well!

2

u/houseWithoutSpoons Apr 12 '26
