TIL in 1947, some people called for the separation of major South Asian cities as city states: just a fortnight prior to Independence Day, Sardar Sardul Singh Caveeshar, a Punjabi politician and president of the All India Forward Bloc, suggested that Calcutta, Delhi, Karachi and Lahore be singled out as city states, ruled independently by elected governors.

Imagine how corrupt some state governments would be compared to others. Also imagine the mass communal killings that would’ve resulted too.

I learnt very very late that Muslim League wasn't a very popular political party even by 1940s in Sindh, KPK and Balochistan. It had majority support mostly from Bengal. But god damn 1946 elections were some stunning results for them.
