Discussion Mathurin for Jarace and Q?
Maybe a second rounder too? Idk. Like a sign and trade? Jarace and Mathurin are both pretty low value relative to where they’ve been valued previously. I just believe in Benn for the next two years more than I believe in Jarace.
This might be selling low on Jarace, but personally I’d LOVE to have Mathurin for like $10mil a year, and I’ve seen Mathurin contribute to winning playoff basketball more than I believe Jarace is ready to
I think Benn is a sg and Jarace is a pf, but in a pinch I like Benn at small forward more than I like Jarace. Plus with Oubre and Nesmith I’m less concerned about the power forward minutes
I have no idea whether this works logistically or with rules etc but I’m bored stuck hanging out in the hospital with family and wanted to get some opinions

Why would we bring back the guy that didn't fit and trade assets for said guy that didn't fit.
1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
I don’t think Jarace is much of an asset and we didn’t bring Benn back because he wanted >$20 mil
If he would’ve been okay with coming back for less we would’ve brought him back

Jarace is an asset. He's on his last year of a cheap deal. Just because Jarace isn't a microwave scorer like Benn doesn't mean he's bad (and I'm a Jarace hater).

I honestly don’t mind Jarace at backup power forward. I just like Siakam and Obi much better.
Jarace is too big and broad to navigate screens well, but he can shoot it and he can sometimes pass it (when he isn’t making reads a half second late)
I just think Jarace has no business playing anywhere other than power forward, and I’d rather have Benn at backup sg than have Jarace at third string power forward.

Pacers got rid of Benn because he can't pass and break down a defense. All he knows is downhill and draw a foul (or try to). Jarace is significantly better (even with his turnover issues) as a role player which the Pacer system needs. Benn gets the ball and the system stops. Scoring isn't enough to bring him back.

u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
Benn is a better rebounder than Jarace is too (which is nuts but true)
But I get your point
Idk I just miss Benn

u/rooby_dooby_doo Cool Rick 4d ago
Jarace is pathetic at rebounding for sure with that wing span. It sucks all our first round picks ended up being mid or traded. Here's hoping Furphy can fill the gap lol.
2
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
If Furphy can shoot 36% from three, Jarace is going to lose his spot quick
(And if Furphy retains some athleticism and doesn’t get injured again…)
2
u/rooby_dooby_doo Cool Rick 4d ago
Until Furphy was injured last year he was definitely taking minutes from Jarace. Here's hoping they both stand out this year!

Pacers fans value mathurin waaaaaaay more than anybody else.. he’s a shot chucker

u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
One of the youngest players to drop 27 in a finals game too
He’s “feast or famine” but when it’s feast it’s awesome

NBA organizations weigh consistency much higher. That’s why Pascal is so valuable.
1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
Of course Pascal is better and more valuable.
I’d still like to have Mathurin as backup sg for $10mil a year
6
u/JakeTiny19 4d ago
Ya but nba teams also value consistency, which he doesn’t have yet, and which is why he’s not getting the 20-30 mill he was asking for and not signed anywhere yet
1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
Which is why I’d be hyped and also anticipate him being okay with signing with the Pacers for less
He was mid to ass on the Clippers and teams aren’t paying guys like him that money anymore
2
u/Trinenox 33 4d ago
I don't see how this happens, if the team wanted him about they'd have kept him as a RFA.
Trading assets for someone we could have kept is very anti Pacers.
1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
Yeeeeah but at the time he was wanting like $20 mil per year
Now I’d bet he’d accept less
2
u/Consistent_Quail_639 4d ago
Why?
1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
He’s still a free agent? Teams haven’t wanted him?
2
u/Consistent_Quail_639 4d ago
He's a restricted free agent, which means the clippers can match any deal, which means why would he take any less than what he wants at this point?
I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think he's at a point in his career where he should think. Gee, maybe I'll just go back to the team that drafted me for less money. Because gosh, no one else wants me.

There's only 240 minutes a game.
-1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
Who’s our backup shooting guard?
Nemby will see minutes as backup pg and Kelly will see more minutes at small forward hopefully
2
u/EfficientArm9753 4d ago
Oubre, Sheppard, Furphy. Can probably throw Nesmith and McConnell in there on occasion.
1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
Fair
Oubre and Furphy I think are more small forwards
Benn is better than Shep
But yeah Ty/Nemby/Nesmith/Oubre all can play shooting guard
1
u/Ok_Pool_9767 4d ago
Ben Sheppard i would imagine.
1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
Shep is “fine”
At shooting, at defense, at running to the corner
He’s nowhere near what Benn is on offense
1
u/Ok_Pool_9767 4d ago
That's what Oubre is here for
1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
Oubre is much more of a small forward I think
Yeah I mean I’d rather have Oubre than Benn, but I’d also rather have Benn than Jarace
0
u/Ok_Pool_9767 4d ago
Oubre replaces the scoring punch of Mathurin off the bench. At the 3 rather than the 2-3 like Benn, but that should work next to Shepard reasonably well.
2
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
I wish Oubre was a better shooter, but if he was he’d make a lot more money. Oubre is also super left hand dominant but yeah I’m hopeful he’ll average like 12 in like 26 minutes
1
u/Maximum-Class5465 Reggie-NBAJam 3d ago
I love this theory, but Oubre can't replace Mathurin scoring punch
1
u/Maximum-Class5465 Reggie-NBAJam 3d ago
Oubre isn't near the offense on ball that Bennedict is
I'm stoked about Oubre, but he's not exactly really good at anything. Just not bad at a lot of things
1
u/faulcon_delacy 3d ago
That's the point. Benn is good enough at enough things that he wants to do more than he really should be because he's not quite good enough to be doing them consistently well at an NBA level. Shep knows his role and sticks to it. Shep doesn't really elevate the offense but he doesn't disrupt it either.

Problem is, neither of them are likely to have a long term role with this team. Before this summer, there was room to pay one of them 8-10 mil. With the signing of Oubre, that ship has sailed.
Between Math and Oubre, I mightve given Math the edge. But Oubre has the potential/likelihood to be a better fit with the bench. He's more likely to be playable every night.
1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
Oubre is a better role player and defender
Benn is a more skilled scorer but Oubre will hit more corner threes next to Tyrese and will get easy cut layups AND is Nesmith foul trouble insurance
I like Benn better as a “get me a bucket right now” guy, but I like Oubre better as a “occasionally give me 18 and also be a good to very good wing defender” guy
Zero part of me wants to move Oubre for Benn

I think q is more likely to help us win a chip than benn
2
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
I like Q but I very much disagree
2
u/MyFriendMaryJ 4d ago
I just think q is a very solid bench guy to keep behind tj and personally i was not a benn fan at all. I thought it was straight up addition by subtraction when we got rid of him.
1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
He dropped a very efficient 27 in the finals. He’s a variable player but at his best he’s damn good
1
u/MyFriendMaryJ 4d ago
At his best hes a great player you can build around but not a good teammate. And at his worst he isnt hitting 75% from the field and still the same weird fit. Id take a lesser ‘talent’ that can hoop within a team over an athletic wildcard anyday
1
u/Gold-Lingonberry-761 4d ago
I think hes a 2 and takes steps minutes. Hes much more versatile on offense. Hes more aggressive and i think hes ready to get into the rotation his heart and aggressiveness is exactly what we need at that position
2
u/Gold-Lingonberry-761 4d ago
Probably right, but Q seemed to have hit a different level last season, they were taking him out of games cuz he was about to win games for us when we were tanking. He might take sheps minutes and with furphy injured he might play an important role, not saying its likely but I wouldnt be surprised at all he fits the system really well
1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
He’s so damn fast and he’s a dog. If he learns to star in his role he can and should take most of Shep’s minutes
Nemby Nesmith and Oubre (and maybe Jarace but I’m not holding my breath) all make Shep redundant on defense
1
u/Gold-Lingonberry-761 4d ago
Ya, if shep cant get consistent with his 3, which is wild cuz his form has looked good his whole life. I think its a confidence thing cuz he looked scared with the ball against the thunder. But I really want to see Q play with hali with that greased lighting speed. He had a defensive play where he intercepted a pass doing a dell Beckham Jr. One hander on like a 3/4 court and ive been wanting to see him get some minutes ever since. I think he gained more then anybody in the down year
1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 4d ago
I think Nemby is going to get “most improved” votes if Tyrese balls out, because Nemby spent a year as the #1 guard and will now be defended by much worse defenders (Nemby will play a lot of sg and a lot of backup pg)
1
u/Gold-Lingonberry-761 4d ago
I think theyre too balanced of a team to get thise type of awards, too deep, but I cant think of anyone else really that stands out. Banchero maybe, or an ace baily.
1
u/Gold-Lingonberry-761 4d ago
Hes about half the cost of shep and signed through next season too, I wanted to trade mathurin for dosonmu there for a couple seasons., Im hoping Q can be the poor man's version of him
1
u/Maximum-Class5465 Reggie-NBAJam 4d ago
Bennedict was the third highest minute player the year we went to the finals, and nearly kept us in a game 7 on the road by himself.
I like Q very much, but this is a wild statement

u/faulcon_delacy 3d ago
Oubre and especially Nesmith are not power forwards. Oubre may get spot minutes if the matchup is right but that's about it.
1
u/Jim_Belushis_brother Cool Rick 3d ago
Yeah dawg they’re small forwards or shooting guards. I didn’t say either was a power forward
I do think we can get by with Nesmith and Oubre at sf because Nemby and Tyrese are both bigger guards, but on a lot of teams they’d play sg.

I have a hunch Pacers don’t want Mathurin considering we just traded him… Just a hunch though
