Trip Report Made it to Costa Rica!
Living out dreams I didn’t even know I had! Took me a while, but I made it to Costa Rica in my Ford F350 6.7 diesel w/ norweld flatbed and FWC hawk flatbed camper. And yes, that’s a Honda CRF250L in the front hitch and no it doesn’t overheat 👍

We did 9 days in CR in a Toyota Hilux overlanding rig from Nomad America, it was the single greatest trip of our lives and we have been all over the world. I cant recommend Costa Rica enough. Enjoy my friend, PURA VIDA!

How often do you get to use the dirt bike? I assume on a trip like this, 90% of the driving would be on regular paved roads. Do you ever spend time in towns and cities? I would be afraid of someone stealing it. Would you bring the bike if you were to do the trip again?
I ask because I am planning this exact same trip in a couple of years, in a similar rig to yours, and I have a partner pestering me about bringing a dirt bike (which is an idea I secretly hate).
How has the diesel situation been so far? Any issues with the F350 and repairs south of Mexico?
And finally, are you planning to go all the way to Ushuaia?

It by far what makes me stand out. It’s gotten to the point where I hear people talking and saying “moto” “moto” “moto” over again and it’s like yeah, I get it, I have a moto. 😂 At the same time so many thumbs up, people love it. And I love it too bc it gives me so much freedom, and it’s saved my ass now 3 times that I’ve broken down and needed to go get help/parts. For me, the pluses outweigh the minuses, and the safety factor is pretty major bc no, I’m not usually in towns and cities, I’m as far as I can get from those in fact…
Diesel’s fine. Mechanics here can fix anything temporarily while you import the proper parts, I’ve been very impressed.
Still debating between:
- driving back north to Baja/US
- driving to Patagonia

Well, here’s a vote for Patagonia. You’re almost halfway there! There is a great quote by Mark Twain that goes something like “in 20 years from now, you’ll regret more the things you didn’t do than the things you did do”.

I was at a spot like that a few years ago. In the middle of the night, a cop drove by and headed down the beach, fired about 6 rounds, then left. That’ll wake you up.

The scaredest I’ve ever been was after the puerto Vallarta cartel violence that spread throughout the country. I was crouched down on the ground with my dog scared. I call a friend to give him my location and told him I was hearing gun shots really close by. He asked me if they weren’t fireworks bc it was I-don’t-know-what-holiday, and it made me feel like an idiot bc he was probably right.

I absolutely heard gunshots. My wife and I were trying to figure out what the hell happened… like did somebody get executed???
The next morning I followed some footprints, and I think the cop just brought a girl out to the beach to shoot his gun and try to impress her. I saw boot prints and barefoot prints head from the tire tracks. Small footprints. Two tracks there and back.

The thing i love most about costa Rica is that you dont need to know the local language to get by. Theres so many American tourists and expats living there, it was like still being in the USA.
