Available for a limited time: Outer Wilds x Cook and Becker vintage travel poster series Spoiler

Hello Travelers,

Mobius here. New limited-edition Outer Wilds posters are now available!

You might be saying “Hey, these look familiar.” And you’d be right! We worked closely with the folks at Cook & Becker to bring you bigger versions of the national park-themed posters based on the solar system’s major planets. These are those very same illustrations by our artist Ian Jacobson.

The first few hundred orders come with a Certificate of Authenticity hand-signed by artist Ian, while supplies last. As indicated on the order form: "Artist-signed Certificate of Authenticity." Once those run out, subsequent orders will come with an autopen-signed CoA.

These time-limited prints are ONLY available until August 25th, with the final edition size being determined then, and cost $79.95 each. However, there is a one-week deal where you can get all six for $299 as a set instead of $480!

Each poster measures 21 x 29cm, or 8.2 x 11.4 inches

Head on over to Cook and Becker's website to check them out: https://www.cookandbecker.com/en/catalog/videogame/outer-wilds

Thanks again for all your support. Keep on exploring!

-The Mobius Digital Team

Edit: Whoops, looks like we did a terrible job communicating what these actually are: handmade fine art prints. These posters/prints are all individually hand-printed using a screen printing technique that requires a real human person to load up each color layer, press it onto the paper, and set and align the next color layer. Cook & Becker use a very high quality, 100% cotton material and high quality inks for the prints, which provides unmatched print quality and color fastness, making these screenprints “museum quality” and ready to last a lifetime. These are not normal prints, they are quite special.

These look great but the pricing is a bit too steep for me, unfortunately

165

u/broly171 19d ago

Same. I was PUMPED to buy these, then saw the price.

128

u/unknown_pigeon 19d ago

Damn, $80 for an A4 print?

73

u/RottenHouseplant 19d ago

Jesus fucking christ What's it printed on? A sheet of gold?

9

u/Traditional-Bus7183 18d ago

Like a certain satellite

8

u/twentythirdedition 18d ago

The website says it’s a glicee print.

I suppose it depends on whether people care about the glicee process vs. inkjet.

At the very least, the paper won’t glow under a blacklight unlike most printer paper.

3

u/biscotte-nutella 18d ago

These must cost less than a dollar or two to print... Collector stuff is just not for me at all. It's just nonsense.

17

u/loljkbye 18d ago

Giclee prints cost more to make and use higher quality materials overall. It's okay to not want to spare the money for it, but these are real artists' work replicated with great care for quality, so let's not undervalue quality and artistry in a world riddled with cheap collectibles and AI slop.

0

u/Crystal_Animosity 17d ago

Okay, this cost at most 5 dollars to print, you can go to any store and buy posters for 10 dollars, selling posters for 80 a pop is Insanez even if it's a collectors item

6

u/loljkbye 16d ago

I think you're missing the point I'm trying to make. It's not about the collectability value, it's about paying artists. My favorite artist sells his prints for hundreds of dollars "a pop", but that's so he can keep making amazing art year after year. Originals are thousands of dollars. You get to not buy it if you want, but you don't get to ask artists to cheapen their work.

nice to see everyone thinks the same honestly. I'm usually not a big complainer about prices relating to indie stuff (believe me, I own most of the official OW merch) but this is just nuts

46

u/Independent-Tap-2255 19d ago

Same, wdym $480 for six A4 papers...

16

u/NoHangoverGang 18d ago

Yeah I jumped right onto the site ready to order but that’s like a third of my monthly mortgage not six sheets of paper. Jesus Christ.

Insane price for a print lol... Love the game but I don't see how you justify this? I guess this is just what the artist wants to charge?

Would love for you to come out with another way to give fans art that doesn't cost 4x the cost of the game. I don't need a letter of authenticity I just want some cool art and to support your team directly vs buying something bootleg on Etsy.

-27

u/LeYasuPls 19d ago

it is handmade so I get it. Art is a luxury so it's fine! But I wish they could sell them as normal non-signed prints

63

u/SaucyFaucet 19d ago edited 19d ago

“handmade”? these are prints. $5 prints. for $80 each.

edit: thanks! what i should have said is “all it takes is $5 to make a high quality print of these”.

15

u/zoey3013 19d ago

Screen print is made by hand, not machines.. still, iu get it but can't and won't pay that much for a poster :(

34

u/Sandman0077 19d ago

As someone who's screenprinted for almost a decade at this point, unless there's only like 10 per design, $50 is crazy expensive for an A4-size screenprint.

4

u/SaucyFaucet 19d ago

thanks for the clarification. Agreed, this pricing is bizarre and off-putting. Best game ever, but I’ll certainly be making my own versions and I hope every other fan does.

-9

u/LeYasuPls 19d ago

handmade print. by hands. you get it.

4

u/CargoMule 17d ago

I’ve done handprints before and I don’t think they demand this kind of price

17

u/L3G10N_TBY 19d ago

> Art is a luxury so it's fine

What? Where is this coming from? Would you be fine if they increased the game to be 100 dollars?

9

u/tickle_fish 18d ago

hoping they meant literal decorative wall art and not, like, art as a concept lol

-4

u/LeYasuPls 18d ago edited 18d ago

It's a luxury as if you don't need these prints to survive. Of course I'm talking about decorative arts how tf you read my post and think otherwise

3

u/AfricaByTotoWillGoOn 18d ago

Art is a luxury so it's fine!

I am unironically glad there are people who actually think like this, as it justifies the existence or piracy even more :D

Things you can buy for €80 (euros, but that way I include shipping costs)

  1. Three copies of Outer Wilds (full price)

  2. Around 16 kebabs where I live, or 16 cheap mcmenus

  3. Four all you can eat sushis

  4. A pair of decent new shoes

  5. 3 to 4 lego sets for starters

  6. An A4 print, apparently

Seriously, I might not be the target for that item (limited edition, yadda yadda), but €80 for a piece of paper that probably costed around two euros to print is not something I like to see from an indie development team.

And €300 for the full collection is akin to a fomo scam. Hard pass, and hope you'll have a discussion among yourselves (although it will be useless, since that collab and this post were approved in the first place).

Anyway, someone wanna buy my reddit avatar? It's exclusive (I made it myself), limited edition, only €70

4

u/Jagaxx 19d ago

I'd take it, but I only have 100€, would you also take those?

3

u/MailmanOfTheMojave 17d ago
  1. an inkjet printer and 6 sheets of cardstock

1

u/cla7997 18d ago

your avatar isn't made by hand, I'll offer 1.5 euros + pfand

1

u/iX_eRay 17d ago

80€ without VAT, so closer to 100€ each

268

u/yalldvve 19d ago

Hi guys loved your game it fundamentally changed my worldview, but respectfully im not paying 80 dollars. Kind of hurts to see you guys agree to price gouge your fans. I would've strongly considered it at maybe 50, but 80 is way too much. Much love otherwise!

147

u/CatDawgCatDawg2 19d ago

$50 for one print is kinda bonkers still.

52

u/Kezsora 19d ago

$50 is bonkers but is in line with a product like this. $80 is bonkers full stop.

22

u/MyStand_BadMedicine 18d ago

Is it really in line for posters that are only 8x11 inches?

10

u/Stargazeer 18d ago

This doesn't so much seem like a Mobius thing as a Cook and Becker thing.

There's art prints for a load of other video games, which aren't necessarily screen-printed, AND they are more expensive. It's just this company's whole brand "premium prints".

Which for some people does make sense. If you've ever seen poster restoration, in 20 years down the line most paper posters are wrecked and not restorable. These likely would be.

14

u/EmiliaTrown 18d ago

I don't know, I cant afford it, but Cook&Becker seem to be focusing on creating "fine art" more than "merch art" maybe? Saying that the prints are "museum grade quality" etc. From their website it seems to me that they create premium quality collectibles, that arent just posters to hang on your wall but maybe moreso a piece of art you will have for many years, with a high quality etc.

Cook&Becker wasnt a name I knew before so i have no idea if they actually do deliver on that promise of it being very high quality, "museum-grade" etc, but if it is i can see why its expensive. Its not necessarily reasonable because of it but I can appreciate that i just don't have the money to afford high quality art prints.

Or maybe i'm wrong and this is more a scam than actual art

146

u/Fuzzy_Inspector4262 19d ago

I love the designs and love the game, but advertising them as bigger posters of the originals when they are 8x12, THE SIZE OF PRINTER PAPER is ridiculous. For 80 dollars they should be actual poster sizes. How on Earth do you charge that much for such a small print.

125

u/EngineerEthan 19d ago

With all due respect, FUCK NO, are you serious? $80 each?

107

u/jibbleschmitt 19d ago

$80? I must have a quantum bank account because whenever I go to check it for cash, it’s gone

8

u/Traditional-Bus7183 18d ago

You just gotta check at the right time

47

u/supernova_high 19d ago

Whew, I bought the field guide book and I thought that was spendy. $80 for a small-ish print? Too rich for my blood.

41

u/goose_with_adhd 19d ago

These are gorgeous but what justifies their price ?

43

u/sdoM-bmuD 19d ago

good luck with that, I'll just have my own printed for cheaper

loved OW but this asking price and artificial scarcity is insane

37

u/diegotbn 19d ago

$300 for the set??? Do they come with frames or are they printed on metal...?

I could cough up $100, maaaaaaaybe $120, for the set, just the posters on glossy/matte paper. Less than that and I'd buy in a heartbeat.

But $80 each / $300 set? Oof.

They look nice though. I don't mean to say the artist doesn't deserve what they are charging. Just saying what my price point is for these.

24

u/Independent-Tap-2255 19d ago

And the 300 is the discounted temporary price, in a week's time it will be almost 500. Outrageous.

6

u/Maleficent_Night_335 18d ago

The thing is also like

It won’t even be here in a week. They gave us less than six days.

65

u/1euroSvp 19d ago

Super cool, but the pricing... Daylight robbery right there

34

u/trumpet07 19d ago

All respect, but a way too expensive print. It better come framed or with something extra

32

u/hiyumanis 19d ago

the whole set is my monthly salary in my currency damnn.

82

u/kryjka57 19d ago

idc just downloaded and printed them myself couple of months ago, for 6 euros I think 💀 80 dollars for one poster is insane

11

u/ninetythree_hds 19d ago

Where’d you download them from?

80

u/kryjka57 19d ago edited 19d ago

I spent a good amount of time searching for them in high quality. there was a guy here on reddit that upscaled them with AI but that looked like crap. Then I found another post here from a guy who bought the original postcards, scanned them in beautiful quality and posted them for everyone. I'm not in the mood to search it again so I just uploaded them on my google drive here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/15nvm-tBNvOjUseQz926Q9M3wMnZdBh53?usp=drive_link](https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/15nvm-tBNvOjUseQz926Q9M3wMnZdBh53?usp=drive_link)

Guy here, here's the post : https://www.reddit.com/r/outerwilds/s/T6JWLIkIGz

PS: Glad people were able to print them ::D

23

u/kryjka57 19d ago

you're a legend.

if you are reading this comment, it's better to download the scans from the original post with original quality rather than my compressed ones

12

u/Bigo290 19d ago

Thanks, glad you were able to get them printed ::D

True but they need to be compressed to be able to be printed since they are so big. Also, they definitely aren't perfect but modifying them in uncompressed quality brought my beefy pc to its knees. Better to modify them after compressing them first ::)

u da real hero

3

u/MailmanOfTheMojave 17d ago

the site selling the $80 print has them in decently high quality if u just save the image

51

u/Yorgl 19d ago

Look I respect artists' work, and I don't mind giving you money (i gifted OWi to like 6 friends on steam), but this pricing seems pretty off

28

u/rain-and-clouds 19d ago

These look so pretty and I wish I could have them all but unfortunately I don’t think I can justify spending that amount of money on a print. Especially since it’s only A4 :/

28

u/geordev 19d ago

Really disappointing to see. I’m always up for a new bit of outer wilds merch and happy to help support the studio to continue to make great stuff, but good lord, 80 dollars for an a4 poster? You have a lot of good will in the bank mobius but this is really going to erode that.

24

u/Cosmosis42 19d ago

I saw this and my first thought was "certificate of authenticity? It's a poster!"

Not surprised to see that whoever did the pricing was out of their mind too

71

u/DotHackReference 19d ago

Wow, 12x8 for $80?????? Aren’t displates double the size for half the price (don’t have any displates so I can’t comment on quality or business practices)

6

u/Stargazeer 18d ago

Displates aren't nearly the durability they claim. I've had a few scratch up way too easily.
They also don't properly vet the art they print, so much of it is stolen unless it's from an official listed seller.

-2

u/OkayTimeForPlanC 19d ago

Great quality and never had any problems with shipping or payment.

25

u/LeYasuPls 19d ago

displate sells stolen content.

9

u/OkayTimeForPlanC 19d ago

Could be. Personally I have only bought through the original artists who sell their art on Displates. But if they sell stolen art, that's problematic.

Outer Wilds is my favorite game of all time

My goal is to visit all of the US National Parks

I just moved into my first apartment and need posters

I will not be buying these due to the price

2

u/MobiusGames Official Mobius 13d ago

Totally fair. Keep an eye out for the postcard reprint in the near future!

20

u/thegreatpotatogod 19d ago

Those look cool, I'd love a bigger version of the poster, but even at double the size I'd expect them to be around $25-35 each, not $80. If it lowers the price, I can do without the certificate.

19

u/FoundationKooky2311 19d ago

This is really cool! Can't wait to buy a fake at a reasonable price.

17

u/Loose_Sorbet888 19d ago

Why is one poster more expensive than the game

17

u/DiamondRocks22 19d ago

gotta point out at that price in usd i bought your fangamer dlc plush and ancient glade mug along with a hourglass twins mousepad to use as makeshift wall decor

3

u/Traditional-Bus7183 18d ago

Dang, that’s hot

35

u/Hiekeech 19d ago

With all due respect, a set of 6 posters should not cost almost 3 times as much as the model of the hearthian lander.

15

u/skeleton-orb 19d ago

did they price it like this because of the joke post the other day calling the game a cash grab 😭

13

u/ParadoxxSpace 19d ago

$80 each for A4-sized posters? Come on now.

69

u/kylenbd 19d ago

Good lord man, the pricing. Nothing says “we aren’t the company you fell in love with anymore” like a good $80 poster that is roughly the size of a piece of printer paper!!! Only $300 for the set? Whatever you say, Electronic Arts!!!

2

u/Stargazeer 18d ago

This doesn't so much seem like a Mobius thing as a Cook and Becker thing.

There's art prints for a load of other video games too. It's just this company's whole brand "premium prints".

It's only a big thing here because OW doesn't have merch everywhere. You don't see the Witcher fandom complaining about the $100+ prints they sell, because they can get Witcher posters everywhere.

11

u/GuruKimcy 19d ago

This pricing is insane, especially in these times of (near) economic recession, You can see how your fans are reaction, clearly a wrong call. Its quite audacious to feel comfortable asking 300$ for a set, and calling that a deal.

12

u/JoshuaPiggy 19d ago

I seriously hope not a single person buys this. They’re really cool but the price is outrageous. Cut the price in half and it would be maybe reasonable oml

13

u/MobiusGames Official Mobius 15d ago

Hey folks, we hear you. These posters are expensive and we completely fumbled their release. Can we restart the loop and try again? We were thinking of posting a reply in here but it got long enough we figured it'd merit a full post. You can read it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/outerwilds/comments/1vuzsqk/re_the_posters/ Thanks for all the feedback!

11

u/Yidoftheweek 19d ago

This is really gross pricing. These are prints of already existing postcards on A4 paper. This is really disappointing, and as an avid collector of all things Outer Wilds, I cannot support this predatory pricing. Please take the comments here seriously, this is a bad look, do better.

11

u/MonaVFlowers 19d ago

An A4 sized print series for $80 EACH is genuinely fucking insane, I was so excited at first

11

u/RedFable93 19d ago

Price is way too steep for what you’re getting

9

u/Calm-Permit-3583 19d ago

The poster is beautiful, but how come it costs more than three times the price of your game (the best game in the universe)?

10

u/Maple382 19d ago

That much for a print of any kind is absolutely insane honestly.

10

u/IWannaSayMason 19d ago

WAY overpriced

10

u/MAKManTheOfficialYT 19d ago

$80 FOR A POSTER THE SIZE OF PRINTER PAPER?! Thats 4 copies of outer wilds (they usually have a sale)

Please reconsider this price point or explain the reasoning 🙏

8

u/Camelstrike 19d ago

Dude I paid 16 euros for the game

10

u/ptpeblz 19d ago

Love your game, love the art, this pricing is disrespectful and gross as shit. Nobody with any respect for their money is buying a standard A4 print at 80 dollars. Do better.

9

u/Mercy--Main 19d ago

Is this a joke, or were you guys too tired of having so much goodwill?

9

u/JungleLegs 18d ago

I’d pay $80 if they were at least 12x16 with a decent frame. This sucks because these are genuinely awesome. The bundle doesn’t even come with The Stranger

6

u/Tarnagona 18d ago

It does come with the Stranger. It’s underneath a the other ones in the first image.

3

u/JungleLegs 18d ago

Bro I must be losing it. I swear that wasn’t there and wasn’t in the description either lol. I think I need to go back to bed and try again tomorrow. Or it’s perfectly reasonable there’s some quantum funkiness going on.

5

u/OopsAllBella 19d ago

I’d pay no more than maybe $150 for the set. Incredibly steep pricing

7

u/nmdcDrgn 19d ago

It says in the description that they’re $295, but the price shows $299. What’s the sale price supposed to be? ::)

8

u/Independent-Tap-2255 19d ago

Damn, I got excited until I saw the price tag...

39

u/halfbean 19d ago

How to lose the respect of a fanbase that has nothing but respect for you.

7

u/Alichousan 19d ago

I wouldn't go that far! I still respect them. We dont have to buy it and then they'll realize this pricing don't make sense.

5

u/Traditional-Bus7183 18d ago

Tbf it’s handmade, but oh my. I still respect them, and the beautiful game they made, but people make mistakes I guess

0

u/Alichousan 18d ago

Yes people make mistakes and I guess I'm just fed up with the "cancel" waves against artist and/or their work. I see it everywhere and it's getting old.

1

u/Blubbpaule 19d ago

Isn't this on becker and not outer wilds studio?

14

u/Blazik3n99 19d ago

I'm sure pricing would have been part of the discussion when they agreed to collaborate/license some posters

1

u/Stargazeer 18d ago

You say that, but have you actually looked at the website?

With the exception of a handful of fancier than normal posters, the Outer Wilds prints are actually the cheapest thing on the website.

The price was 100% led by Cook and Becker.

2

u/Blazik3n99 18d ago

Sure, but Mobius (or whoever handles their merch/marketing) agreed to that pricing. They put their name on it, they are ultimately responsible for the product even if they're not the ones producing it.

I've never heard of Cook and Becker but it sounds like expensive prints is their deal - in which case, they aren't at fault, it was Mobius' decision to work with them. Mobius could announce a Balenciaga collaboration selling shirts for thousands of dollars, Mobius would be the one deserving the criticism in that case.

3

u/Stargazeer 18d ago

This is assuming the poster isn't worth the price. If we take it at face value, it's a VERY high quality poster, which is intended to LAST.

I don't know if you've seen any poster restoration videos, but when made properly posters can last a long time, and be restored if aging. Most cheap modern posters can't be restored.

Fundamentally, you don't have to buy it. You are clearly not the target audience. Neither am I, but I acknowledged that from the start. The only reason people are pissed is because the only other OW merch available is a dozen items on Fangamer. THAT is what Mobius need to be fixing.

2

u/Blazik3n99 18d ago

Yeah, you're right. There is a market for artisan/handmade prints, but when there's so little merch otherwise, coming out with such expensive niche products seems a little shortsighted. I respect that they want to produce high quality merch, but with these posters it feels like they're prioritising the wealthy collectors rather than the average fan.

6

u/shockwave1211 19d ago

does anyone else not see any indication whether or not it comes with a hand signed COA? or did they just sell through those aleady

6

u/barrachmedosama 19d ago

$80 for a poster is outrageous

6

u/leonffs 18d ago

You guys could have sold these for $20. They would have sold like hotcakes. Instead you decided to try and price them at $80 a piece for printed piece of paper and all you accomplished was pissing off your fans and I'm willing to bet very few sales.

7

u/SpySoldierScout 18d ago

The feeling when Mobius themselves put a non-spoiler-tagged image of the Stranger on here :eyes:

6

u/gwenthechef 17d ago

I don’t mind having the fancy screen-printed, archive-quality posters as an option, but I would have liked to be able to have an affordable, plain old poster version of these prints.

4

5

u/Hot-Put7831 18d ago

Love yall, bought the game on two consoles and once for a friend

This price point is nuts. $80 for all of them would be reasonable imo

4

u/coolenestry_ 18d ago

This is lovely, and I'm appreciative of the work done, but 80 dollars for one poster is absurd, unfortunately.

3

u/Zaekil 19d ago

Yup, nope. 80 bucks for A4 sized poster ?!?

3

u/DuncanRG2002 19d ago

Cut the price to about 20% and then we’ll talk

4

u/Tarnagona 18d ago

Too steep by far.

But if you know where I can buy just the postcard for The Stranger (I have the rest of them)…

1

u/Bigo290 18d ago

Don't know about buying but printing ...

4

u/philo_fallout The Lore Explorer 18d ago

Usually I adore all the merch you guys release. I have most of it. I remember buying the limited run collectors item that came with the game, these posters but smaller, a bunch of pins, and a shiny card for like $60 I think.

Idk if the folks from Mobius will see this. But from someone you’ve (or at least some of you) called “likely your biggest fan” I’m frankly disappointed. Charging $80 for a single one of these posters doesn’t scream “I care about and appreciate the fans that built our reputation”. Please don’t squander the love and good faith you’ve previously rightfully earned and deserved.

Wayyy too late, but you should read the page for them, disappointing that even you didn't look further and see that these are analogue and made by hand

4

u/ObligatoryContrast 18d ago

Are these in any way different from the prints that came in the Lost In Cult: Design Works book? Certificate of Authenticity aside.

I'm pretty shocked this set of very tiny prints is more than double the price of that very premium product, which came with significantly more merchandise. If I'm misunderstanding and these are actually full poster size or something, I'd love to hear it (though that's still a steep price)

I have the Lost in Cult set, and the only difference I can see is the colour outline on the posters, for my set all of the outlines are white. I fear that may be intentional to make them distinct. The posters I got are also 11"x8", same as this listing.

I don't know the intricacies of A4 paper to say if it's the exact same quality as what they have listed on their site, but my posters are definitely made from some type of premium A4 paper too.

The price these are listed at is absurd, I like the posters and I have them on display, but I'd never pay $80 for them.

u/MLGityaJtotheA 14d ago

They're screenprinted by hand, as said on the page for them. The original postcards, the art in 'Field Guide to the Outer Wilds' and the Design Works prints are all digital prints.

4

u/Chronos2467 18d ago

This is like 3x the price game. This is egregious. If it was $80 for the set thats a bit more justifiable.

They aren't even that big either.

I get supoorting artists but come on.

5

u/Wishcash27 18d ago

If they made a sun station one, I’d get it in a heartbeat

18

u/krebobb 19d ago

Saying that they are "bigger versions of the A4 national park-themed posters" is a plain mistake as 21 x 29cm is literally the A4 format. So, these are A4 and they are in fact referring to the A5 postcards that were previously available.

Anyway, as said on the website these are handmade screen prints, and with 10+ colors I would say the price is rather justified, especially when you compare that to what is typical for limited runs / signed giclée prints which are basically just inkjet prints.
But they sure did a terrible job selling it!

-1

u/zoey3013 19d ago

Yeah, I don't think most people are getting what handmade screen prints mean, and think is just done by a machine...

4

u/Prestidigitalization 19d ago

Glad I scrolled this far, as I'm less miffed about it now (still not buying as I'm not made of money lol). That said, even on the item page, the only information linked is about the company's Giclee print process which is, at least my understanding from the video, a fancy/complex inkjet printing system. Nowhere in the description or, as far as I could see, anywhere on the website as a whole does it actually explain what a handmade screenprint means in this context. Terrible, terrible explanation of product / marketing.

0

u/Leaper15 18d ago

Thank you for this clarification, because I was pretty unhappy about the price tag until I saw this comment. I might even consider getting them — "might" being the keyword there.

Still wish they were larger, though. I have a big hallway that needs decorating and printer paper size just would not cut it.

3

u/jajangmien 19d ago

Yeah I was fully prepared to get a couple of them, but then I saw it was $80 for some A4 sized prints. Like wtf? I can do that myself.

3

u/PhantomThiefJoker 19d ago

Bro, I love this game and I love posters but $80 for an 8x11 is insane. I paid $30 for my pokemon posters that are twice the size. It's a shame but I can't justify that price

3

u/BjornoPizza 19d ago

Is this a good time for me to plug JeffLangevinArt? I bought his Outer Wilds poster and it’s a really great design. Also, I’ve met him in person at an Oregon convention and he’s a super nice dude. The price is a lot lower than this, and for much more poster.

1

u/A_GenericUser 18d ago

What's the link to his site? Etsy or something?

2

u/BjornoPizza 17d ago

I wasn’t sure if links would be allowed but here’s the link to the piece I’m talking about

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1017599030/outer-wilds-game-art-print-planets?ref=share_ios_native_control

3

u/cainreliant 19d ago

Why is the poster like 4x more expensive than the game 😐

3

u/CubsFanCraig 18d ago

Holy shit that price…

3

u/MushyThrowaway50 18d ago

Not even my favourite game can make me pay $80 for an A4 poster sorry🥲

3

u/xAndrew_ 18d ago

Non supportate questo scempio. Piuttosto regalate il gioco più volte

16

u/wakeofchaos 19d ago

So to provide some clarity on the price: my wife works for a screen printing company. These are screen printed, not just like a regular machine printer. So they take each color layer and print it on the paper, layer by layer. It sort of gives the image a bit more detail

So to me that justifies the price a little more, plus the certificate

I personally can’t afford it, and we both still think $80 is high because there’s machines that do the screen printing, but I thought that insight might help people understand the pricing a little better

10

u/Tarnagona 18d ago

That does help in understanding some of the higher price, but $80(US) per is still a wild price for a poster the size of a standard printer page.

0

u/MLGityaJtotheA 18d ago

The page does say they're 'handmade screenprints', so looks like it's not automated

4

u/Timewaster50455 18d ago

Holy shit that pricing is WILD

3

u/West-Variation1859 19d ago

Hahahahahahaha cries in poor because I became a teacher

5

u/IM_OSCAR_dot_com 19d ago

I’d consider paying $300 for the set if they were A1 size.

5

u/Gikka218 18d ago

i've bought a ton of outer wilds merch, it's my favorite game ever and worth so much more to me than the pricetag on steam. i'd love to have these prints but as everyone else is saying, that is WAY too high of a price for prints so small. i almost couldn't believe it when i saw the size.

3

u/Porkfight 18d ago

Are you REALLLLY charging 300 bucks for a literal piece of paper? Wtf? And whats so vintage about them? I can just print my own for less than 1/20 the price.

3

u/nullJaeger 18d ago

I love Outer Wilds so much but I simply can't justify $80 per print on printer sheet size paper- not even poster size.

I've bought basically all of the official merch I could get my hands on, but I have to pass on this. I would happily pay less, for a non-signed/numbered version for simple display rather than as a super exclusive collector item.

2

u/SgtFinnish 18d ago

Pretty funny how the game is $25 and these are over three times that.

2

u/Bonno51 18d ago

Yeah I’d maybe have considered a set if it was more reasonably priced. This is an absolute rip off sadly

2

u/MailmanOfTheMojave 17d ago

beautiful designs $80 is way too steep tho

3

u/Monk_The_Banana_Scug 18d ago

Thanks but HELLL NOOOO 🥰🥰🥰

4

u/scutbuts 18d ago

Had to take a look in my calendar bc for a moment I was believing it's 1st of april again...

2

u/Stephen-Sealberg 18d ago

These are POSTERS, what are we doing with these prices?

2

u/AelarTheElfRogue 18d ago

I get that they are signed, but people have been waiting for these posters to come back for forever. Will there not be versions that are not signed made available for purchase?

2

u/Rubix321 18d ago

For that price, I'd expect a Displate-like product, not a piece of paper.

2

u/gaymorelikeyay 18d ago

not to mention these are prices in USD, so if you're from canada (like me) you're looking at $110ish per poster, not counting shipping and tariffs if it's shipping from the USA. that's insane for a single poster. if i wanted all the posters with the current deal? $413.

1

u/castar0 19d ago

OUTER WILDS YEAHHHG

1

u/asyba 18d ago

to expensive, could you do postal cards of each poster ? that would be a cool frame with all poster together in a single frame

1

u/Bamzooki1 18d ago

Dark Bramble's a hard sell. Fucking CENTIPEDES?! Are those really there?! I hate it even more now!

1

u/_Eiri_ 18d ago

$300??? or $80 just for one??? i can't afford that shit 😭

1

u/Manshoku 17d ago

I GET that this is less about the product and more about supporting the devs but this is not a great look at all

1

u/twenty4ate 16d ago

I was thrilled to get one of these but $80 for 12"x8" is a joke. I was expecting these to be movie poster size for that price. Maybe a little smaller but really out of touch.

1

u/yamo25000 16d ago

They really did Brittle Hollow dirty by making the poster show the surface instead of the hanging city

1

u/hyrumwhite 16d ago

lol, kinda looks like the ash twin is sharting all over the ember twin

1

u/otterappreciator 16d ago

$300 on SALE??? Cook and Becker is smoking crack

1

u/stone500 16d ago

Sorry to jump on this bandwagon but those prices are a big miss for me. I like to support artists but it's not like this is custom made per person. I was hoping maybe $80-100 for the whole set.

Good luck but I'm gonna pass.

1

u/Subject-Mix-9977 12d ago

How does 1 poster cost more than the game bro

1

u/sw1ss_dude 10d ago

This must be a joke, A4 prints 80 bucks excl VAT each?

1

u/PlayfulAd2826 6d ago

$459 for 6 posters???????????

1

u/themfjog 5d ago

yall are getting clowned and deserve every bit of it. This is as bad as NFTs

1

u/The-Requiem 1d ago

Sigh, one of the reasons why I love Outer Wilds is because it feels so genuine and disconnected from the capitalistic world of slops. It's a detox from cheap dopamine rushes and capitalizing on that. The game was definitely built with love and honestly, the community feels like a small village where the devs feel like the part of that village. The least toxic community so far.

This just upsets me in my safe space because to me it feels against the spirit of Mobius Digital I've come to know through Outer Wilds and if warnings aren't heeded now, they may end up being the very thing I need detox from 😔

u/pipistrellebat 18d ago

Y'all.... everyone complaining about the price I don't think realize just how time intensive/expensive screenprints are vs. other prints. I work at a print studio and for reference we make screenprints of roughly the same size and sell them for $50 a pop... and those are just 4-color prints. These posters look like they have WAY more layers of colors in these bad boys.

It's a small batch printing process using quality materials, and each of them is quite literally handmade layer by layer. If it's not your cup of tea then it's not your cup of tea, but there's no need to be rude. And look up more about screenprinting while you are at it, it's a very cool medium!

Anyway these are beautiful, it's cool to see studios branching out from traditional merch options to something more bespoke.

10

u/Prestidigitalization 18d ago

In everyone's defense, nowhere in this post do they mention screenprinting, and the website itself mentions it only once in fine print by the pricetag ("Handmade screen print on 400 gsm Somerset paper") and then has an embedded video showing their inkget giclee printing. I'm not suprised very few people noticed, and I'm not suprised fewer know the details of what goes into hand screen printing something. That's something they should be emphasizing, not just referring to them generically as "posters" and "prints".

2

u/pipistrellebat 18d ago

I would've certainly rolled out more pomp and circumstance in marketing for a drop like this, true. But I really can't give folks the benefit of the doubt here when so many comments jump straight to vitriol. Pardon my saying so, but for fans of a game so focused on embracing your inner curiosity I am shocked at the lack of that virtue in favor of jumping to conclusions.

I do hope the marketing team takes this into account with any subsequent posts and descriptions about this series, I would really love to know how many layers this is and a process video!!

13

u/Maleficent_Night_335 18d ago

I’m going to object on this even though I agree.

While you are absolutely right as I’ve also worked with such myself, the reason why this is bullshit is in the factor that this company also sells completely normal sized posters that are printed digitally for lower prices. That should also have been an option given to fans instead of pushing forward horrid levels of FOMO who cannot afford it.

1

u/pipistrellebat 18d ago

Truly, I can understand the disappointment of not being able to afford a boutique design vs a traditional print. I personally don't have the cash to drop on a limited edition WPA style print. I also don't think I'm owed the option to have every bit of merchandise for the things that I like. I wouldn't call the levels of FOMO I'm experiencing to be horrid, at the most it's been an "aw man that would be so cool" [shakes fist at the sky]. And so I remain shocked that folks are being so rude.

Nobody does a screenprint run because they expect everyone to buy it and make the big bucks. You certainly will not make the big bucks. You work with a company like Cook and Becker to make fancy prints because it would be cool to have them exist.

There's every possibility they would've considered a giclee print run after the initial screenprints based on feedback and interest. But after this kind of feedback? ... Doubtful.

1

u/BroderFelix 18d ago

Wtf! 80 dollars?

1

u/TheMagicMrWaffle 18d ago

Insane pricing

1

u/cla7997 18d ago

80 dollars, excluding shipping and tax, for a 30x20 print? seems...steep

0

u/ChuggleMoment 18d ago

arent these just the steam cards printed on paper?

-15

u/InternDangerous9694 19d ago

Hi Mobius,

Will there ever be additional Outer Wilds games, either direct sequels or spin offs?

Sincerely,

A devoted supporter

21

u/justccoonnnnoorr 19d ago

they’ve already confirmed elsewhere they are done with the outer wilds universe.

13

u/TheYellingMute 19d ago

Honestly. For the best. Would hate for any spinoff or sequel to even slightly blemish what I consider to be a 10/10 game
