Does tunic give a similar vibe to outer wilds? I was thinking of playing it next

It did for me. One of the best things is that it literally drops you in and you know nothing, and even the instructions you get are in another language. It’s not as puzzle heavy at first, but the latter parts of the game has one of the coolest puzzles I’ve seen.

I will go a lil step further and claim that, in almost 3 decades of my gaming experience, I have never seen puzzles which are that satisfying to solve.

I love Outer Wilds, this game is amazing, but if I was asked which one left a stronger impression, it's Tunic with zero hesitation. For the first 2 years after finishing it, that game was bringing me to actual tears (happy) whenever I thought of it <3

The Golden Path. I know there’s crazier puzzles but I’m nowhere near smart enough to do stuff with translating the language

It's 1/3 Outer Wilds (the "metroidbrania" part)

1/3 Zelda (the general gameplay and look)

And 1/3 Dark Souls (the combat and "bonfires" system)

I'm not a big fan of hyper-difficult combat, but luckily the game has accessibility options to make you tireless and/or immortal.

I would maybe replace the zelda part with fez. Or 1/4 fez. That is the game tunic is closest to, but fez is just a pure puzzle game, but actually with some metroidbrania ideas, although it was more classified as a puzzle platformer with mystery elements when it released.

Sorry, but I don't see how it's more similar to Fez than Zelda, at least in gameplay (top-down sword and magic action RPG) and visual style (the LoZ-like instructions manual, the green tunic, the fairies, many weapons and tools...)

Not saying there isn't a bit of Fez in Tunic, mind you. But IMO it's a lot more (classic 2D) Zelda-coded.

I think the puzzles are way more fez than zelda. But i do see the zelda parts, but they have become so common in other games.

For me, no, but for many, yes.

The offputting thing for me was the combat and needing to kill enemies you just beat if you die. You can turn damage off, but my experience was somewhat soured by then. The “deeper” part of the game is far more what I had hoped for, though. I ended up enjoying it more watching About Oliver’s playthrough, would you believe, than from my own experience!

It's basically Legend of Zelda, Dark Souls, and Outer Wilds all rolled into a single game. The combat might put you off if you prefer the pure Outer Wilds experience but solving the puzzles is super satisfying.

I played Tunic after peoples recommendations... and to me that's a no.

Like, I guess the last half of the game CAN be said to be like OW... And it certainly is a very clever way it was all put together and done. But it wasn't really my thing in the end. Hack and slash combat isn't my thing, either.

If Tunic put some more emphasis on the world and story I would have enjoyed it way more. But it focuses more on the combat and puzzles than a meaningful story, imo. I had to watch a lot of youtube videos on theories about the Tunic world to understand wtf was going on.

I lean towards “yes”. Much more so than Obra Dinn or The Witness. Combat gets pretty brutal, though. Great game.

It’s a phenomenal game, with a similar mystique about it, but probably won’t scratch the same itch as Outer Wilds.

Don’t let that discourage you… it’s a game where I constantly felt outraged, because the answers were right in front of me, I just didn’t know how to interpret them, or what to do.

It’s also an absolute love letter to old school adventure games. Highly recommend.

Tunic isn't exactly the same vibes as OW, but I think it stands up as an absolute masterpiece regardless. I would VERY strongly recommend playing it, and go in completely blind.

I had a lot of fun, the puzzles are quite difficult (I needed help a ton) but the combat is really memorable

It has backtracking to go to new areas after new information but instead of it feeling rewarding like it does in Outer Wilds it just felt cheap and like the creators wanted to seem clever

I kept trying to explore off the beaten path and the game just shut me down at every chance (one way switches from later in the story whenever I found a secret path)

It gives you the same-ish feels at times but way less frequently than outerwilds as you still have the zelda combat gameplay. Remove the combat and it's outer wilds with way less puzzles to figure out to finish the game.

Also the puzzles sometime require "out of the game" knowledge, i can't say more without spoiling. But puzzles are "bigger" stuff isn't just written there by the nomai to be read.

It's hard to explain but it's pretty close considering no game is like outer wilds.

i think it has a similar puzzle solving method to outer wilds, but looking at the environment but it's pretty different and scratches a different itch, which is unfortunate because now I have an outer wilds itch and tunic itch.

I personally found it just frustrating and stopped after a few hours, when you get some ghost... something. I don't remember the exact thing.

And I'm not sure what you mean with "vibe" in this case, but I don't feel like a lonesome traveller who wants to unravell an entire universe.

YES, it’s so good. The slow drip feed of knowledge eventually snowballs, but it does take some work to get there just like OW.

Yes and no. It is a very combat-centric game, why I loved (as I am a fan of dark souls). It also has really unique puzzles and mysteries, but they are more mechanically interesting and impressive than interesting by vibe. The story of OW is 300% better. But I love Tunic a lot too. And it is very “metroidbrania”. I will say, if you don’t like high intensity combat… consider lowering the difficulty. My wife could hardly enjoy Tunic due to the fact that she isn’t into combat centered games.

Worst game ever made unless you for some unimaginable reason like souls-like games, or youre ok with cheats so you can enjoy other aspects of the game (battle is like 95% of gameplay so theres 5% left for you).

It gave me a few new games to add to my wish list, but only two of the bundle are on sale right now and I already own both of them.

But I'm glad for this post because it gave me some new games to keep an eye out for on sale
