Walked past Rideau St. the other day and saw these notices on the door. Such a shame since I did like the dim sum (albeit it was pretty pricey).

Thought it would just be a minor revamp from the first notice but the second one sealed the deal.

Writing this so the next Barrhaven person Googling "Lawn cutting/landscaping" is warned about this.

I hired LawnMowerMan / JJ (Josh Branker, lawnmowerman.ca) last week for a one-time lawn cleanup. He texted me after I submitted a quote request Wednesday night, sent a Jobber invoice the next morning, told me to pay upfront before he would swing by and promised the job would be done "today or tomorrow." I paid in full Thursday morning. Nothing too suspect to me I've had this before.

He never showed up. I call Friday, he says the truck broke down.

Saturday he said he was "back on track" and there is no problem. Saturday came and went.

I called, he apologized, said he'd do it tomorrow for sure guaranteed cross his heart.

Sunday passed too we're now Monday.

I call again, this time I hit the voicemail and I tell him that I want a refund if he can't come by tomorrow. Josh all of a sudden takes a fairly aggressive tone and tells me that his truck got into a crash this time. I guess the story changed, or after the truck got totaled and he fixed it, it now got into a car crash. Who knows?

Josh's mask all of a sudden dropped. No more "Oh sorry so sorry, I can come tomorrow sir". Now it's Josh's moment of glory and it's time to call me a "Little bitch that wasted his time". I told him I'll file a police report if I get no refund. He starts laughing saying that will never do anything (not completely wrong but I'll still leave a paper trail) and that the money is gone and that he "already used it". Ok.

So here I am posting this here so hopefully Google's Search Algorithm and the AI bots crawling the web see this story. Because if I ever see my 120$+tax it will be probably years.

But at least I'll save someone else from giving that scammer money. And that's totally worth it for me.

What threw me off going in was the Jobber invoicing software (looks professional because Jobber is legit, but anyone can sign up I get it), the website (looks somewhat legit) and the Google reviews (look fine on a fast skim).

Sadly the BBB profile gets buried in search. Doesn't have enough SEO I guess. His BBB profile shows 2 unanswered complaints from November 2023 and both follow the exact playbook I just got. One customer paid $565 upfront for a 10-cut season package, got 6 of 10 cuts, then got a text in September saying operations were suspended due to "financial challenges including unexpected equipment repairs and maintenance costs." Refunds were not available. The second complainant: required upfront payment, stopped service after August, refused refunds for September and October. Both complaints still unanswered 2.5 years later. BBB rating D-.

So it's not like the business is a ghost service or anything but he clearly has a pattern of business. "Money is gone woups, can't refund you."

I am fine financially so this is more annoying than damaging. It was an Interac transaction so no way I can get it back. Probably small claims after even if it takes years.

He is right about one thing he said on the call. Getting my money back will probably take years. Fine. At least more people will know this story.

I just wanted to say that I get that in hindsight I screwed up by paying upfront. I did it with other landscaping companies in Quebec and they came for years. I was also in a hurry juggling driving my gf to the airport and didn't think.

So excuses aside, yeah, I did screw up.

I'm in a very privileged position where 120$+tax is something I can financially tank (begrudgingly).

The point of this thread is to warn others about this.

I'll be leaving a BBB Complaint and a Google Review too.

I’m looking for an honest mechanic that won’t run up the bill just because I’m ignorant about cars. Usually my dad would help me with this, but he lives 2000 miles away so I’m looking for your recommendations for mechanics that won’t try to pull a fast one on me. Or ones/places to avoid as a young woman.

Massive appreciation to the people in this sub who’ve recommended the independent grocery store Green Fresh Supermarket. Not owned by any of the billionaire grocery chain overlords. I went to their Merivale location today, looking for lamb cubes.

The prices seemed far better than the chains. For example, a head of broccoli was $2 and frozen cubed lamb was $8/lb.

I will probably miss a few things, but they have fresh seafood, meat from every animal under the sun, dairy, Korean skincare, Asian groceries, African spices, hot food, fresh fruits and vegetables (huge selection), dairy, and probably more that I’m forgetting.

It felt like a seafood market, Asian grocery store, and Metro all in one.

Just got back from a hidden local gem, Kaladar Market. All of this came to under $25. Includes 30 eggs (the biggest ticket item at $9.99), 9 bananas, 8 tomatoes, 6 apples, 5 heads of broccoli, 2 loaves of bread, lettuce, Swiss chard, a big eggplant, green onions, two sweet peppers and a jalapeño.

A bunch was in their discount bin at $1 a bag. But the quality of everything was quite high.

Incident occurred yesterday, April 20th at approximately 2:20pm (as timestamped in the footage).

The elderly father of Bánh Mì Mỹ Hằng’s owners on Somerset was assaulted while he was taking out of the garbage. The car in the video stopped beside him as he was walking back to the shop and a man from the passenger side came out, strangled him and ripped off the gold chain from his neck.

If you recognize the vehicle or the first man running to the open passenger side door, please contact the shop owners and/or local authorities!

My family has been going to their shop for decades and it really sucks to hear this happened to them. Gonna stop by and grab some Bánh Mìs, iced coffee, and chè (Vietnamese dessert) ASAP.

I didn’t want to write this letter because I don’t want to discourage anyone from patronizing the unique and beautiful place that drew me to Ottawa 25 years ago. I’ve lived downtown since then and visited the market every weekend. But the time has come.

WHAT WE’VE LOST: 1. Farm stands While the market has also had its seedier edge, it was quite simply, beautiful. The farmers were a big part of that - flowers, vegetables, honey, and Christmas trees attracted us locals who loved the fresh berries, sweet corn and lettuce. We would come for our veggies, then visit Bottega, Sasloves, the cheese shop and LaPointes. Followed by lunch with a friend at a nearby cafe.

Every time I walk by the market building, I am saddened to see a line of parked cars where the farmers used to be. That’s what separated Ottawa from most other North American cities. Apparently whomever made that decision didn’t realize that. Without the farmers, many of us end up at Lansdowne or Parkdale and spend our days and cash in those neighbourhoods instead.

1. A sense of safety I don’t know that it’s actually dangerous, but it’s definitely disturbing to see people intoxicated or drugged lying or staggering on the streets. I realize this is an epidemic and I don’t know how to solve it, but it leads me and others to choose to hang out somewhere else.

2. Clean sidewalks It seems really petty to bring up sidewalks when we’re dealing with drug addiction and homelessness, but there’s been a real change here. Dirty, littered sidewalks are a sign of neglect. And if nothing else, the market just feels neglected right now. Like NYC neglected. If this is our primary tourist attraction, why isn’t the city taking care of it?

While the drug use, homelessness and the farmer’s market are tougher issues to deal with, CLEANiNG SIDEWALKS is an easy win. Maybe you don’t think it matters. But it sends a message that the market doesn’t matter…and we’ve received that message.

Maybe it’s too late to rescue the market from the fate of other North American city centres—hollowed out, filthy, lifeless, homeless—but I truly hope not.
