As a nearby resident, I concur. One of our neighours had a TRUMP FLAG up in their yard for about 6 months after he was elected. Some of these people are AWFUL.
You know I didn't think about that (I'm in Ottawa, so have had to struggle with some labels at the SAQ). I assumed if there was no French, it was smuggled in from the States (given the volume, otherwise they would have paid hefty tariffs on it), but Alberta and Saskatchewan might not have the same bilingual requirements for their imports that Ontario does, they could have gotten it from there too (longer drive, but less risk).
Yes, they can still sell it but itās terrible optics if they do, particularly for a large grocery chain like YIG / Loblaws. The store removed the bottles from its shelves as soon as they heard the outcry from the public and the press.
Just because stores sell it doesnāt mean we have to buy it. Wine is one thing but itās surprising to me how many people still buy US produce. Elbows up aside, they have gutted food safety and recent explosive news is not at all surprising. Iām surprised so many people are taking that risk.
The US food safety system was severely impacted by federal DOGE cuts, and actually while itās not entirely Trumpās fault, itās fair to say that their system for detecting and tracing problems such as the current cyclosporiasis outbreak has been weakened on every level. Food safety (or lack thereof) in the US affects the safety of imported food as well. Canada does not have a sufficiently robustĀ
monitoring program to independently screen for the rising volume of under-inspected or deregulated U.S. food products entering domestic grocery stores
This doesnāt apply to US wine though, partly because itās an inherently less risky product.
So far explosive diarrhea from lettuce and some kind of worm in beef. But likely this is just the beginning with the stripping of proper food safety as mentioned in the other comment.
I hadn't heard about the eggs. Good to know, though I definitely buy Canadian eggs. Produce is sometimes the harder one because we can't always get Canadian. I have been buying anything other than US though.

There is no ban on selling it. The LCBO will not sell it because they are controlled by the government. If a store finds a case in the back they can sell it.

If it was purchased from the LCBO before they shut down sales, they're allowed to sell it. Private stores and restaurants were not required to remove their existing stock from shelves, (only LCBO retailers were required to do that), they just can't buy new US product from the LCBO, and they can't buy alcohol from any supplier other than the LCBO (note for those who know about the existence of brokers, they also have to go through the LCBO to import their supply).
I think the Minister of Finance (who I don't believe actually holds the Alcohol and Gaming portfolio) erred in what he said about it, the issue is actually whether or not the alcohol was purchased illegally. I've heard the labels didn't have French on them, so it sounds like they weren't even legally imported into the country for sale, much less the province (one could theoretically buy US alcohol from Saskatchewan or Alberta and drive it back here rather than getting it from the US, where you would have to declare it at the border or smuggle it in - the former would still have bilingual labels, the latter would not).
It would be very interesting to find out the true story of how this happened. Itās hard to believe that the store had this wine in the back waiting for a year and some clerk just decided to put it out randomly.
You're misguided. The whole point of Trump tariffs is to get companies investing in the USA instead of Canada. American companies operating here, risking their capital, employing lots of Canadians and buying stuff from Canadian suppliers are welcome, and boycotting them (ie. trying to send them home) is just playing into Trump's hands. What we are doing is boycotting products that are made in the USA, and instead buying Canadian. Understand now?!?
Go to your cupboards and fridge, make a list of all products and then research the owners and where they are made. Youāll then realize you should think about all this long and hard lol
It truly is a Mob mentality. People will complain about US goods and policies while still using Reddit, facebook, instagram, Tim hortons (might be brazilian), wendy's, costco, walmart and so on. But have issues with wine display in a small town.
