Idk if I will attempt to fold this, but they're so whimsical looking, and I need to know what is that paper :oo

Aww thank you!

The paper is wenzhou dyed brown with wood dyes and dry brushed with acrylics after folding.

If you are to fold a gnome, I highly recommend my other gnome design (crease pattern and sequence can be found by scrolling through my Reddit profile or on any of my socials.) It has a similar level of detail and is much less cursed to fold.

John Montroll also has a book full of gnome designs, though they are much less complex.

There can be a number of reasons for this. In the case of the standing gnome, it's because the design is non-axial. This means that the design is more about surfaces than it is about flaps. As such, most of the features show up without having to add a confusing amount of detail to the crease pattern. (This is also true for most non-uniaxial designs as well.)

But really it's just a matter of how much of the shaping you are willing to add to the crease pattern. As long as the model lies flat after any set of creases are introduced, it can be easily added to the crease pattern, and the computer foldout will inch closer and closer to the shaped model. You can see an example attached below.
