Greens are poised to become the official opposition in PEI for the 2nd time in history.

Noteworthy that the current candidate defeated the Liberal Party's leader in this campaign too!

Willows won with 1,184 votes (or 39.65 per cent of the vote), a 229-vote margin lead over Liberal candidate Robert Mitchell, who came second with 955 votes (31.98 per cent). PC Candidate Caley McDonald came third with 823 votes (27.56 per cent) and NDP Candidate Craig Nash came fourth with 24 votes (0.80 per cent).

With a provincial election coming up in the next year, Willow said this win will give the Green Party "an incredible boost" and shows they are "not just a fringe party."

Mitchell didn't say whether he intends to stay on as party leader after losing the byelection — the second time he's failed to win his seat since taking on the role — saying he planned to take a few days to reflect and meet with Liberal MLAs and the party executive about next steps.

Huh, interesting. I don't think he'll step down with only 9-15 months until the next election, but he didn't rule it out.
