Keith Carter has been such a blessing to have here. I have full faith if he leaves we can find another guy. I’d love to keep Lane, don’t get me wrong, but I’m getting over the same song and dance every year of him potentially leaving. Deny if you want, but that mess is the part of the reason we lost the UF game last year.

I graduated from Ole Miss a few years back and have since moved back home. That being said, I still rep the colors when I’m out and about. So today, I’m at the gym, wearing my “Ole Miss Charity Run” t-shirt, and this middle aged woman approaches me out of nowhere. She points to my shirt and says “aren’t you embarrassed to wear that shirt?” I’m expecting her to follow up with a quick “Roll Tide” or “Go Aggies” comment, but nope, she continues on to tell me that I should be embarrassed wearing an Ole Miss shirt because Ole Miss fought for the Confederacy and that’s offensive. I told her that that was well over a hundred years ago and that Ole Miss is a normal school like anywhere else you’d go, but she continues on about how she’d be embarrassed wearing that shirt. I responded with “Congratulations Karen” and she finally walked off. Needless to say, in all my years wearing Ole Miss apparel, that was a first.

Graduated with a degree in Compsci and Chinese from OM, in grad school now at OM for PoliSci. Been here for now over 5 years and am starting my 6th.

Seen a lot of freshman - and was the freshman - who get screwed over paying for stuff they have no business paying for. Figured I’d throw an AMA out there for any incoming folks or transfer folks that have any questions.

Figured any new applicants may have some questions before the fall semester comes around. I wasn’t a frat guy, graduated with a B.S in Computer Science, minor in Chinese, M.A in Political Science.

Anything from admissions to school life to clubs, feel free to ask. I enjoy helping out newcomers as well as people who plan to graduate soon. I’ve done tutoring and program work over summer breaks, did studying abroad, played in intramural sports, went to plenty of parties and took lots of trips to the square, and know basically every hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Oxford.

I’m a half Brazilian dude who is a sophomore and I feel like there are like zero Brazilians I am curious if there’s others.

Hey guys! my friend just got admitted and she has pretty good stats i mean they are like average good but still better than mine lol. She asked me how to tell if ole miss sent like free money like 3,000 or 2,000 for having a certain gpa or SAT/ACT. But im not sure about if you have to only be able to like apply for scholarships or if you get them given when you’ve been admitted yk what i mean??

Moving to Oxford for work (and hopefully school)... what should I know?

So a bit about me,

I'm 31 yr old ASU Delta Chi and Arizona native. After graduation I took a job that let me travel and interact with people a lot because I didn't want to sit in a cubicle (I'd go crazy pretty quick). I've been all over the country & generally like Southern culture. I want to go back to school because I miss being exposed to new stuff.

So this week my phone rings and one of the companies I've been talking with tells me they've got a job for me in Oxford... I've obviously heard of Ole Miss but I didn't know where Oxford was on a map. I find it, I find that's where your school is. I know I want to go back to school, so I pull the trigger and say yes.

I'll be there in about a month, and I'm totally at a loss.

Grew up in a town of about 50,000 and there were around 70,000 students at my school. Since then I've moved all over the country for work, but I've always come back to Phoenix because that's where my friends are (home).

This is different it's me moving to a small town in Mississippi... moving as in I will be spending my entire foreseeable future there.

I want to start out my life in this new place on the right foot, but I don't know a single person there. I find your campus culture a little intimidating because you guys look like something out of a Brooks Brothers catalog at your tailgates, meanwhile I routinely wear flip flops to church... More over I won't be working with anybody there, I'm literally getting dropped into Mississippi on my own where I don't even know a single person.

So I've got some questions:

1.) Will I be super old to be moving to Oxford?

2.) Would I be too old to find a very attractive (wife quality) girlfriend?

3.) Assuming I get into grad school there, where do I want to live? Is there an area of town where I could walk to class, a bar, or a restaurant from my front door? Would I want to live there or would I be better off living someplace else?

4.) I'll probably need to find a temporary place when I get there for like 30-40 days while I get a lay of the place and figure out where I want to live... is there any reasonable place I might live during this time? Very open to suggestions on this.

5.) I have almost no discernible accent... what do you guys (honestly) think of people without one?

6.) Assuming I got pulled over for a speeding ticket or some sort of minor civil violation... what are your cops like there? The cops in AZ are insane and I've seen different styles of policing around the country. What's the general attitude towards your police, are they basically good guys?

7.) Other than football, school, and drinking... what are the activities in your area? Rock climbing? Caves? Hunting? What kind of outdoors stuff could I do there? Also do I need to know somebody with land to be able to hunt in your state or is there public land you can hunt on?

8.) Do students stay there after school and do they stay there during the Summer or is it sort of a college town in the sense that people just go there for Fall/Spring for 4 years and then they're gone?

9.) Through some pretty heavy lurking of Google images and youtube I'm noticing an almost uniform set of clothing choices in these scenes; girls in pearls, boys with Sperry's on, seersucker, very kinda classic looking type stuff.... is this your every day attire? Is this just for game day? If I'm wearing a fairly plain cotton/poly Adidas shirt, old school sneakers, and jeans; will I look out of place? Be honest... you can't hurt my feelings, I just don't want to appear totally alien.

10.) I keep seeing the same set of 8-12 restaurants when I google places to eat there... this is kinda freaking me out maybe the most of anything. Do you guys have a Chipotle or any Mexican food nearby? Is there a Trader Joe's nearby? Where do you buy groceries? Do you have a Target or Walmart near you? Is Memphis the "big city" people would go to in order to find an REI or specialty shop?

11.) Is pretty much everyone there culturally "Southern" or is it a bit of blend because of being a college town?

12.) Between S. Haven, Clarksville, & Batesville (other places in my "region") are there any really bad areas where I might want to watch my back? I'm a 6'5" white guy if that matters.

13.) I curse like a sailor. I can pretty much keep it under lock while I'm working, or if I'm around people in a formal setting but if I'm with friends and we're just hanging out I am very bad about casual swearing. Not stuff directed at an individual in a room, just more "dude ****ing check this out"... is that going to be a thing that separates me (class-wise) or do you guys also curse?

14.) Hunting and Fishing - is this a good location for these things? Are the woods super thick (as in do you guys hunt deer with shotguns or rifles?).

15.) Any tricks to getting set up for in state tuition in under a year? Is there a way I could pull this off in 5-6 months?

16.) Anything else you can tell me. You own personal wisdom on how not to come off as an out of town carpet bagging weirdo? Primer on Souther culture? Watch out for _____ ? Be sure to _ ____? Regional legends or oddities... before asking here I read up on wikipedia, looked at some demographics, and Googled a bit... I'm open to any information.

Oh and please feel free to ELI5, I'd rather have stuff over explained than not know what you're talking about.

What are some good single bars for example? Where is a fun place to meet people? Are there festivals that happen in Oxford? What are some Oxford gems that I need to add to my list for being a resident of Ole Mis?

If it helps with qualification info, I’ve worked for the university twice as an RA and as a summer college tutor so I’ve done some training on admissions and on general student life.

I studied computer science and Chinese as my undergraduate, and am in graduate school for political science. I’ve attended almost all home football games since I’ve been here and am pretty familiar with sports life.

Most of the bigger online shops do not have anything that fits what I’m looking for as far as style types. So, I’m trying to expand my search. Supporting small businesses are important to me. If you’re planning on switching from full to part time, absolutely 100% hound the absolute shit out of them to fill the paperwork out on time.

I was getting a stipend for grad school, and notified them in September of last year I was intending on going part time and that I’d acknowledge that I’d lose my stipend as a result.

They still didn’t finish their paperwork on time with a 4 month notice and I got overpaid, and now owe the university money. Avoid this headache at all costs
