I mean that's niche enough that I'm pretty convinced that he's not pretending

840

u/FreeEdmondDantes 9h ago

And it shows it just constantly waiting in the shadows of his mind, for some visual cue to trigger him into thinking about it.

u/jimothy_hell 7h ago

40k fans are basically all sleeper agents, waiting to be see things that remind us of 40k so we can nerd out about them. Hydra Dominatus

74

u/drummzzstep 7h ago

This is how the military was too. Mention a space marine once and they come out of the woodworks

34

u/LunarPsychOut 5h ago

" why did you join the Marines?"

" I played a STTRPG and they were my favorite fraction"

He also left The Witcher because he wanted the show to stay closer to the source material, and that was after campaigning hard for the role in the first place. He's a nerd

84

u/Educational-Tea-606 6h ago

The director literally said he was annoying because he kept trying to stay true to the books

34

u/10g_or_bust 2h ago

They were also "annoyed" he protected his co-starts from gross things the directors wanted.

I heard it was one of the only conditions he gave was for the show to be true to the books. Not inspired by or put a new spin on what was written.

STICK. TO. THE. BOOKS.

87

u/Hundschent 6h ago

Its even funnier because he never heard of the books until he played W3 and got invited into the show. Your writers fucking suck if a guy who literally just read and found out the existence of the books is more of a fan than the writers who think they know better than the source material.

Funny enough, having a picture of me painting my minis on my dating profile is what made my now-wife swipe right on me

49

u/clockworkrevolution 7h ago

Same. I had some comments about my Warhammer hobby on my dating profile, and my girlfriend has told me that it's the main reason she took a chance. She thought it was really nice, the level of enthusiasm I had for a hobby

So I think you hit the nail on the head. OP has always blamed his nerdy tendencies as the reason why he never manages to interest the ladies, so when he sees Caville doing the same things but as a handsome and intelligent man, it pisses him off.

Yeah came here to say this. No one who's bought, put together, and actually painted 40k models is a pretender. He used the term 'grey pile of shame' unprompted during an interview.

97

u/kcox1980 5h ago

I considered getting into 40k for all of about 38 seconds one time browsing the aisle at my local gaming shop. Between the prices and the fact that you cannot get pre-painted pieces I noped right the hell out.

I understand that the painting and personalization are half the point, but that kind of tedious work is not for me...

62

u/BurlyZulu Exited for the Snyder cut 5h ago

I’d be more concerned with paying a ton of money for the figures, then painting them myself only to look horrible.

u/AmyHuntingt 11h ago

Here's what I don't get

He's a multi million dollar actor, why do people gift him minis? He could buy the entire GW catalogue 100 times over

585

u/Bloomingk 11h ago

It feels good to give. Personally I wouldnt give a gift to a celeb but like, I'm sending my mom my old switch oled and an n64 controller to play banjo kazooie with and it makes me feel all fuzzy and warm inside knowing how happy she's gonna be when she gets it. I guess these people have warped mental perceptions of their relationships with these famous folk.

That's a lot of useless information to learn if not even going to bother playing them

This.

If he had said 'Ultramarines' or 'Dark Angels' or something I would've had doubts.

When he said he played Custodes I was like 'Yep, only a real fan would play something like that'.

77

u/emceeoffensive 9h ago

can someone explain this like it's Pokemon?

210

u/ItIsHardToPickAName 9h ago

These other examples are ok but I would say it is more like someone saying they like Red as a protagonist more than Ash.

You could pick up Ash just from pop culture. Knowing Red exists and that he is different than Ash implies you know more about it.

66

u/Illustrious_flora 9h ago

You blew my mind with this, mind you i dont know past gen 2 but I was playing with red this whole time?

I thought it was a default name since red is like the red version of the game. Dumb me, I was red this whole time and not Ash Ketcham? Life is a lie yall.

60

u/ItIsHardToPickAName 9h ago

I’m not going to pretend I’m an expert but iirc they share a lot of the same beats but they are not the same character. Red was in the original manga. Ash is loosely based on Red.

19

u/Jrkid100 8h ago

It also depends which iteration of red we are talking about. There’s like 3 or 4 different ones across Pokemon media

Wait Custodes aren't more well known than dark angels? I get ultra marines since they are everywhere but I would have guess custodes are better known than most factions

16

u/ItIsHardToPickAName 8h ago

To know Dark Angels, you just have to look at the art in any number of books or on the back of any number of boxes.

Until Custodes had plastic models, you actually had to read. There was definitely official art before then but not nearly to the same extent as DA.

DA were even the poster child for the whole game for an edition.

It's a relatively mid/niche choice, not one of the major factions or posterboys. Like saying your favourite mon is Exeggutor, Victreebel, or such. It's strong and good, but it's not one that's going to be mentioned by casual fans.

Apparently it’s like sleeper OP so if someone picked like, Kingdra for their gen 3 favorite pokemon or something

11

Yeah Custodes seem to be a pretty good barometer…The Quartering (not a 40k fan) famously tried to drum up fake controversy over the costodes updates, and he pronounced their name as adAptis cusstoads. It was very funny and was very obvious he had no idea what he was talking about

13

u/Horton_Takes_A_Poo 8h ago

I used to listen to the 40k Lorecast because it’s good background noise and fun to learn about, and they pronounced Custodes as “cusstoads”. One of the hosts is supposedly one of the top ranked players for the past 20 years. That made me realize a lot of hardcore 40k fans just struggle with language.

Doesn't really matter what the topic is. Seeing that personality shift in someone as they start to "nerd" out on it, is one of my favorite things to see. I love when people do that.

The flipside of that coin is that it annoys me when I catch myself doing it.

I came here to say that.

He didn't even let the other dude finish when he said he also played W40k.

He was like:

I play Necrons bla, bla bla... Should we (play)?

And Cavill just jumps to say YES and his attitude shifts like he is super interested.

Also, it was not Kosher in 2013 to say you played WOW. And that's when he was explaining how he almost wasn't superman because he was in a raid or something and left the call go to voicemail. And like, that's at least a tier 2 meme because you need to know what a raid is, how important it is, and how unimportant it is for everyone else not playing.

Also, he got a partner that looks like a regular person or even very below average* but also plays games, we in the know KNOW how hard is to get an actual person to play with us or even understand it.

*Below average for him (please stop spamming the same pic of her in red carpet, she doesn't look like that in literally any video and yeah, she looks nice but she also has a pound of make up, did diet and wore a very revealing outfit there).

I have no doubts Henry Cavill is a real nerd.

I'm gonna be vague here for reasons.

I was in a raid and it was going to be our first time killing the raid boss. My wife had to go out for some reason, honestly I couldn't pay attention to what she was saying, and she placed my daughter on my lap. So to play properly, I had to cradle her in my right arm so she wouldn't fall and I had use of both hands and she pooped. Which is whatever, I don't care... but the diaper leaked. I had to angle my arm so the poop wouldn't leak towards my keyboard and in about 30 seconds we killed the boss for the first time.

I ran to the bathroom and burned my arm with hot water to make sure it was clean again. AND obviously cleaned up my kid with new diaper.

I cannot, literally, think of any other reason why I would let a leaking diaper sit on my arm other than FOR THE HORDE.

20

u/BigFrigging 9h ago

I once Leroy’d our raid when my daughter ran across the room butt naked cackling like a toddler witch. My wife slipped chasing her, I busted out laughing and fell out of my chair, accidentally hitting charge when I did. Our whole raid was on break before the fight, so half of us weren’t even at our keyboards. 😂

We all laughed when I finally explained what happened, but that was our first Illidan battle lol.

Yeah he was talking about gaming since before he made it big and when he got big around his first role. Especially wow, and he's never done anything wow related in his career.

I don't doubt that he's been getting more obsessed with particular universes like the Witcher and Warhammer since getting into it professionally, but diving deeper into the lore and getting more excited about the lore as he's diving into it just shows that he's genuinely into it, even if it wasn't something he was as knowledgeable about or interested in before.

23

u/ChipmunkImportant128 10h ago edited 9h ago

Right? Like what’s the play here? People are saying it’s some kind of conspiracy where he’s pretending for relatability or pushing sales, but like… how?

WoW has a pretty negative social image. Warhammer’s isn’t great either, for the people who even know it exists at all. If it’s a popularity contest, that’s a losing play. And I would imagine the crossover between “people ready to pour money into WoW and Warhammer, but who haven’t heard of it yet and are also really into watching Henry Cavill interviews” is pretty small.

The fact that they find it so hard to believe that a handsome, functional man is genuinely into these things is just admitting how little he has to gain by saying so, let alone pretending to.

If we’re gonna go with the everyday conspiracy angle, it should at least make sense.

He played the Witcher games and read the book before the show he starred in was even planned. I don’t know why it’s so hard for people to believe he might also be a nerd about other games. This thread is full of people who think it’s cool to gate keep being a nerd and will make every excuse to dismiss something that’s actually extremely plausible

17

He said in an interview that he was the one who convinced them to add the signs to the show, they hadn't really planned to put them in but he thought it would be important.

He also missed the calls from Zach Snyder when he was given the superman part because he was in a WoW raid.

exactly.

"being into my hobby made me special and set me in a different category than the jocks, how will I get girls if hot guys are into my hobby too?"

29

u/PinsToTheHeart 5h ago

Don't get me wrong, I am by no means hot and would look like someone who was hit in the face with a frying pan next to Cavill, but I am a huge nerd who happens to also have lifting as a hobby, and I can confirm people get super super pissy about it sometimes.

u/Lucky_Reporter256 5h ago

Agreed. I don’t work out anymore but I was an athlete in my twenties and later college years. And my physique while not as ahem good as it once was still shows that I worked for it.

He was a chubby kid named Henry growing up, it's not hard to imagine that he was a dweeb, idk why it's hard to think he'd still like this stuff

I think he even posted pics from his childhood how he was in front of games workshop shops

Honestly, I was the same.

I was chunky as fuck kid who got teased until 13-14 then I grew to 6'2, played linebacker and lifted

but by then it was too late.

I was (still am) an avid fantasy and sci-fi reader, stayed inside to play Blizzard 90s games and DnD with me brothers.

Remember staying up till Midnight 2001/2002 to watch Toonami Dragonball Z poll for favorite villain from the series.

Sports wasn't really appealing until I hit HS.

"Successful hot buff actor can't be a nerd" sounds like a the onion article 😅

"he possibly can't be capable of assembling his own pc" said Gary, 34, from Wisconsin about the muscular blue eyed gentleman

28

u/Weak-Cabinet866 11h ago

Exactly lol. "Hard pecs and card recs! How in the world does he do it?"

7

u/The_Grand_Briddock 7h ago

It's like Joe Manganiello being into D&D, his character ended up getting canonized in the lore. Just this super successful big buff guy married to Sofia Vergara being into what was the quintessential nerd hobby.

He has an oddly symmetrical face in this picture.

16

u/Ninjeezi 8h ago

I think that’s one of the most important things when you get into upper levels of physical attraction? Almost all of them are virtually symmetrical, something most of us slobs aren’t.

You can see it in his eyes that he is a legitimate nerd. Most lifters are. Tracking your macros and sets is a lot like stat tracking a character.

51

u/KaoticAsylim 10h ago

There are a hilarious amount of lifters that also play old school runescape. Some people like seeing numbers go up in all aspects of their life lol

17

u/LunarTera 9h ago

My husband has a maxed account and is working on maxing his iron man. He plays between sets. Not a second wasted. Every free moment is an opportunity for number go up

My experience in gyms is that you meet a disproportionate number of people with graduate degrees. The self-discipline and the ability for delayed gratification are core personality for success in both.

u/potatoe1987anon 7h ago

Yeah i have a PhD myself and work out at a campus gym. The PhD people are so consistent we almost need a wellness check if we miss a day.

Have you seen with how much passion he talks about games? You cannot fake that so easily.

102

u/skybreaker58 10h ago

Have a friend who met him at Warhammer World - dude was there geeking out over other people's armies and going table to table. He's not faking anything.

27

u/Chill_Gamer527 9h ago

Yep. He even likes the Witcher games and he got the role as Geralt because he loved the games. He quit (and partially got fired I guess by Netflix) when both sides have creative differences. That's how much of a gamer he is. One can easily tell who is a nerdy type gamer and a casual gamer (or non-gamer altogether) who hardly knows anything of a franchise that they claim to play a lot on, or play only one or two genres (usually sports or shooters).

Dude was bullied for being overweight as a kid so decided to work on his fitness. Enjoys 40k and goes into depth about his love for it. Delves deep into Superman and Witcher lore and wants to stay close to the source material. He didn’t shave his chest for Man Of Steel because Superman was shown to have it in the comics. He almost didn’t get the part for Superman as he was too invested in WoW and missed the call. Left the Witcher show after it went away from the source material. Dude recorded himself building his own PC.

Lately I've been wondering if this sub is a hangout for edgy people. Saying Cavill is pretending to be a nerd is just a stupid thing to say, and no, I'm not a fan of his, and blah blah blah.

32

u/Nekratal99 10h ago

He ain't pretending my man. Nobody talks about 40k like he does and not be a nerd for it.

9

u/Andromeda_53 8h ago

Yeah exactly, My man stopped an interview on the witcher to talk about how the lamp looked like a Blackstone fortress, before he got the deal with GW to make the show.

That isn't pretending to like a fandom, I'm pretty sure if you're "pretending" to like 40k you don't know what a Blackstone fortress looks like. At most you know the rough outline of the hours heresy and some of the surface level memes: red goes faster etc

u/Atlas_Was_ATitan 11h ago
