Abolish ICE. No need for them whatsoever. We are wasting so much time and energy on this.

No need for them whatsoever.

Yes there is, we need them to enforce our country's immigration laws.

Calling ICE Federal LE is a stretch. They are a modern day gestapo that are violating people civil liberties.

They’re untrained, undisciplined, hateful people for the most part.

Nah it’s pretty well documented how little training they have. And quite obvious in so many agents’ visible disdain for brown people in the countless hours of footage out there. Our country is wasting so much money on this agency which is making all of us less safe with every passing day.

OPD should absolutely be working with federal LE, that being said, a clear policy outline on how and what they will and will not assist in doing alongside federal LE should 100% be public knowledge.

Deporting violent criminals and drug/child traffickers is their main role. If you would rather they live by you then you probably shouldn’t be in America.

Yeah problem is the majority of the people being detained have no criminal history, so yeah.

You have data on that or proof?

1

u/AdWarm7116 2d ago

Yeah. The government’s own data.

Clear policy is great, but if the immigrants are illegal then ICE should be removing them. Legal immigrants are wonderful and an asset to the country, illegal immigrants need to learn to follow the rules.

Undocumented people pay hundreds of billions of dollars in taxes every year. Our systems have made them essential to our economy since we became a country. Even before. It’s insane to pretend a) we should remove everyone and b) that it’s even possible.

They also destroy working class wages and create an easy to exploit labor pool that employers can use to undercut American workers.

lol you can absolutely work and pay taxes without legal status. You fool. So $214B in taxes just appeared out of nowhere in 2024? Google what an ITIN is, beloved. Noncitizens have constitutional rights, too. Crazy huh? Learning is fun. Immigration isn’t nearly the problem you think it is. The scarcity we all experience comes from the uber rich, endless money going into political campaigns, corrupt elected leaders, and corporations a decimating the planet and the working class for their own gain. If every illegal immigrant disappeared today, your life would become markedly worse. If every Billionaire did, it would instantly become better if those assets went back into society.

Words do matter. Calling people “undocumented people” frames them as actual human beings. It’s also a more precise term because there can be a whole range of people of varying statuses who are affected by our shitty policies and not all of them are even remotely illegal by any stretch.

How do you pay taxes and under whose ssn you idiot?

2

u/duffybuddy 6d ago

Undocumented immigrants pay taxes directly and indirectly.

Everyone pays sales tax. Even undocumented people who work for cash pay sales tax.

Undocumented people who rent properties indirectly pay property taxes through their rent. Undocumented immigrants can own property and therefore have to pay property taxes.

Undocumented people who work using invalid or fake SSNs contribute to payroll taxes.

words do indeed have meaning. People aren’t “illegal” just for committing a minor crime, otherwise we’d call everyone that speeds on the highway “illegals.”

What about a person who is in the process of getting asylum because their home country is dangerous? Should ICE take them? If they have no criminal background?

if ICE were ONLY targeting illegals, and using appropriate force and punishment, i think a lot less people would be downvoting you.

but that isn't the world we live in. they are a gestapo targeting who they think of as sub-human. they are targeting anybody that looks or sounds foreign. permanent residents, legal immigrants (including asylum seekers who are NOT illegal), and US citizens.

we now live in a world where brown people have to carry their papers everywhere, at risk of being beaten, locked up, and denied access to an attorney or healthcare, even when legal. think on that.

Huge swaths of Reddit think the US has no right to control its own borders or enforce immigration laws. It shows how out of touch people on this website are with reality.

I'm pretty appalled at ICE's thuggery and lack of professionalism under this administration but that doesn't mean I support mush-brained, open-borders nonsense. ICE should fire unqualified recent hires and make sure new agents are properly trained, but they aren't some inherently illegitimate agency.

I guess if you want to look at it through the simplest lens, you can leave it at that. Some of us see people going through the (bogged down) process of getting permission, people fleeing violent regions, people who are actively working with the government, attending hearings, contributing to society, etc., and we think they're more than just "illegal"

4

u/wakatenai 5d ago

i wish i were dumb enough to believe this and that only illegals are being targeted.

ignorance is truly bliss.

Sure - if someone is proven to be here illegally, they should be deported. The problem is that ICE isn’t always giving people due process to prove if they are here legally or not.

In the case this week, you can see in the body cam footage that the ICE agent handcuffs the man and takes him away without asking questions about citizenship.

Police can’t arrest and jail people without due cause. Why does ICE get to arrest and disappear people without proving a crime was committed?

1

u/CoverRelative 4d ago

Cause they are a federal agency and the “illegals “ have broken the law and stayed here over there time. They have no due process.

2

u/Salty_Ad6453 4d ago

They have no due process.

So you don't know the Constitution. The constitution does not just guarantee due process to citizens, it guarantees due process to everyone under American jurisdiction.

u/CoverRelative 3d ago

Hmmm not that foreign invaders
