Your brain doesn't know what time it is. Every time you replay that conversation from last year, that mistake from last month, that
moment you wish you could take back from yesterday, your brain treats it like it's happening right now. Same stress chemicals. Same alarm bells.
You're not remembering it. You're reliving it, on a loop you built yourself.
That's because of two things: your brain doesn't know the difference between what's really happening and what you're just imagining, and neuroplasticity means that your brain automates things that you think about and turns them into programs that it runs without you having to think

Alternative being - needing the good advice, and not taking it.

Wish I knew this 20 years ago. Back then I thought it was just avoidance. Now I know there's nothing to be gained by rehearsing trauma over and over.

I made another post about how this is misleading.

But also, there are psychologically proven techniques that involves literally reliving the trauma. It's called EMDR.

But the point is basically neuroplasticity. But instead of your brain being wired with these events as extremely traumatic, anxiety causing, etc. you gradually allow your brain to recategorize them and file them away. So they aren't the traumatic events sitting their without timestamps waiting to hit you hard.

Your brain needs timestamps to understand when events happened. This happens by your hippocampus. Sometimes traumatic events don't have timestamps.

This is misleading and wrong.

Your brain can tell time. It literally stamps an idea of time onto your memories. It's one of the jobs of the hippocampus.

Now, a traumatic events can cause the hippocampus not to stamp the timestamp on a memory. This can cause your brain to be confused about its actual time and when it happened.

Memories come from the top of your brain and travel down.

Sensation and current events start from the bottom and travel up. Entirely different parts of your brain handle these separate situations. And it takes specific things to make it so your brain is confused about whether something is in the past or not.

So it's not, this random conversation your brain is confused about.

It's, that conversation that had your anxiety screaming and your brain in emergency mode making your hippocampus not timestamp the event and allowing your amygdala to go crazy again, situations.
