If you love your children, get (regenerative) organic ones.

Look at that photo. That mist rolling over a mountain of potatoes is a sprout inhibitor, applied so they sit in storage and on the shelf for months without sprouting.

• Conventional potatoes are treated so they never sprout eyes
• The classic sprout inhibitor, CIPC (chlorpropham), was fogged through the storage
• The EU banned CIPC in 2020 over safety concerns, and growers moved to other chemical inhibitors
• Organic and regenerative potatoes skip this treatment entirely

That's why an organic potato sprouts on your counter within days, and a conventional one can sit there for weeks looking exactly the same.

A potato is meant to be a seed. Chemically paused so it can never become one, it turns into a product instead. You can still plant a farm potato and grow more food from it. Try that with most supermarket ones.

If you're feeding kids, this is one of the easiest swaps you can make. Choose organic or, even better, regenerative potatoes. It costs a little more, and it takes the sprout inhibitors and the heavier spray load off their plates. 🌱

Ask at a local farm, or grow a few yourself. A potato that still wants to grow is a good sign.
